PHYSICS 620E METEOROLOGY Lesson Plan Projects Activities SOLs Covered The basis of meteorology as a physical science will be investigated during this course. Many facets that compose the complicated story of weather will be studied including temperature measurements, air flow, pressure, density, elements of the atmosphere, heat transfer and radiation, greenhouse effect, ozone layer, humidity, atmospheric optics, and much more. Satellite and weather maps will be studied. Whenever possible, laboratory experiments will be done to demonstrate weather phenomena and concepts. Weather information via the internet and the World Wide Web will be presented. Assignments: Each student will be expected to purchase a reading booklet at the time of registration or at the first class. This booklet will contain material that should be read before the beginning of the second class. For our typical course, there are two full eight hour days of classes, although other schedules are possible. There must be several days between the two full day classes to allow a project to be completed. Between the two classes, each student is required to research and build a project having to do with meteorology. The primary consideration is your understanding of the project, your ingenuity in producing it, and your description of how other teachers could also use it. A short typed description (perhaps only 2-3 pages) must be handed in giving resource material, instructions for building and using the item. A short discussion of how this project might be useful in the classroom would be appropriate. Also during the second class you will give a short (5-8 minutes) presentation to the class. A list of possible projects is given in the booklet, but each student is expected to do further research to improve on the ideas presented here. Do not just copy what is given here. Try to improve it.

La Force, Raymond Pestrong and Britt Thorpe Students need better training at the K-12 level if they are to pursue geoscience degrees in college. Therefore, in September 2001, with a five-year grant from the National Science Foundation, we decided to create a program that would engage K-12 educators and students in the geosciences, while also introducing a more ethnically mixed student population to the field. Our long-term goal is to recruit more geoscience majors to SFSU so that our department more accurately reflects the diverse demographics of the San Francisco Bay Area. Shifting trends in geoscience careers, with a greater emphasis on environmental and applied geosciences, have led us to select SF-ROCKS topics that are relevant to the community. We started with the students and faculty at Phillip and Sala Burton Academic High School (Burton High School) in southeast San Francisco and designed a community-centered, multifaceted education and research program to study four watershed sites that are adjacent to the school: the Islais, Yosemite, Mission, and Lobos creek watersheds. This map of San Francisco shows the locations of watersheds, the SF-ROCKS participating high schools, San Francisco State University (SFSU) and the City College of San Francisco (CCSF), and the rain-gauge installations sites (rain drops). Meteorology and Microclimates Subject Science, Meterology Objectives Demonstrate understanding of microclimates using handhelds for data collecting, submitting reports, and collaborating (beaming). Grade Level Time 2-4 weeks (longer for more accurate results) Software/Hardware Spreadsheet, Drawing, Memo pad, Probes and student-created weather probes Instructional Overview The students are assigned to areas around the school to record daily weather data with their handhelds. The students are given the scenario of working for a horticultural consulting firm to determine the best site for a garden on school grounds. Teachers beam the data collection spread sheets to the students daily, for a minimum data collection period of one week. Working in teams, students are able to collect the required data effectively using the handhelds, and they learn to “beam” shared information. The students are assessed on their ability to analyze data and draw conclusions about the best site for a school garden, based on their collaborative research. This project should last at least two weeks, and as an assessment extension, students could create a simulation where each group drafts up garden plans (blueprints) to make their proposals in front of a committee.
