Subject: 2) Overview Sites listed in this section contain sites with data other than just weather information. This includes map data, miscellaneous images, atmospheric and oceanographic research data, and software for use with meteorological data. Primary data centers are listed first, followed by sites which may have some data of that type but are not necessarily official data centers. Much of the research data is not free and is not directly available over the network; only metadata, or information about the data, is available, and you must place an order for the actual data. http://gcmd.gsfc.nasa.gov

IBM eSERVER p690 Supercomputer
Housed at the Center for Applied Research and Technology, this supercomputer, formally code named "Regatta," can efficiently gather, manage, and analyze large amounts of raw data. The advanced computing power allows for:
  • Numerically intensive (floating point), complex mathematics: each of the 16 processors is capable of 1,500,000,000 floating point operations per second, or 1.5 GFLOPs. Data intensive operations: each of the 16 nodes is outfitted with access to the world's fastest disk/data subsystem, IBM's Serial Storage Architecture (SSA). SSA operates at 150 mb/sec for each adapter.

19. Program Description
Bachelor of Science in meteorology The BS program is designed to be government research laboratories, National Weather Service, or private industry).
http://www.met.sjsu.edu/program/
Program Description
MISSION STATEMENT: The meteorology program provides students with an in-depth knowledge of the atmosphere, and prepares them for careers in the atmospheric sciences. METEOROLOGY
Meteorology is the science of the atmosphere, which blends physics, mathematics, chemistry, and computer science to provide a theoretical and practical framework for studying the complex behavior of our dynamic atmosphere. Weather forecasting is one of the many facets of meteorology. Other areas of study include El Niño, La Niña, global climate change, planetary atmospheres, air quality, ozone depletion, atmospheric chemistry, and severe storms.
FIELDS OF INTEREST
  • Forecasting Air pollution Atmospheric dynamics Climatology Numerical modeling Boundary layer Instrumentation Severe storms Cloud physics Weather communications
THE PROGRAM
Bachelor of Science in Meteorology The BS program is designed to be completed in four years. The BS can be earned in two years by qualified transfer students. Electives allow specialization in computational meteorology, applied meteorology, forecasting, air pollution, science education, or preparation for graduate study.
Master of Science in Meteorology The MS degree program is designed to be completed in two years. A research thesis is required. Research assistantships are often available to qualified students.
