You may also access the most recent cyclone watch messages and warnings from around the country. What is a TROPICAL CYCLONE? Tropical Cyclones are low pressure systems in the tropics that, in the Southern Hemisphere, have well defined clockwise wind circulations with a region surrounding the centre with gale force winds (sustained winds of 63 km/h or greater with gusts in excess of 90 km/h).
The gale force winds can extend hundreds of kilometres from the cyclone centre. If the sustained winds around the centre reach 119 km/h (gusts in excess 170 km/h). then the system is called a severe tropical cyclone. These are referred to as hurricanes or typhoons in other countries. The circular eye or centre of a tropical cyclone is an area characterised by light winds and often by clear skies. Eye diameters are typically 40km but can range from under 10km to over 100km. The eye is surrounded by a dense ring of cloud about 16km high known as the eye wall which marks the belt of strongest winds and heaviest rainfall.

T he Department of Meteorology was founded in 1949 and throughout its history has been one of the leading meteorology programs in the country. It still is the only meteorology department in the southeastern United States to offer degrees from the bachelor of science (BS) through the doctor of philosophy (PhD). The program at The Florida State University is considered to be one of the top five in the nation.
The department uses software developed by UNIDATA (the USSDM system) and NASA (the GEMPAK system) to acquire, process, and store current weather information received by satellite. PC-McIDAS and WSI 7000 software are used to access meteorological data and satellite imagery. An Alden D100 DIFAX computer ingests, displays, and loops National Weather Service forecast maps. GOES satellite images are ingested by the department's direct readout ground station and are viewable in real time at various locations in the Meteorology Building. In addition, the department houses the office of the State Climatologist of Florida, who has a microcomputer/CD-ROM system including a climatic database on compact disc. The department also maintains an atmospheric instrumentation laboratory to support education and research in the area of experimental meteorology.

Meteorology seeks to understand the behavior and predictability of the Earth's atmosphere and requires good foundations in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science. Required undergraduate meteorology courses are combined with courses in other disciplines to develop an academic background that is appropriate for a variety of employment opportunities. Graduate students receive advanced training in meteorology and usually perform research under the direction of a faculty adviser in specialty fields that include climate modeling, cloud physics, dynamic meteorology, numerical weather prediction, large-scale and mesoscale modeling, remote sensing, radiative transfer, and synoptic meteorology.

Why study meteorology at University ?
Meteorology is the science of the atmospheric environment. It involves the study of many different atmospheric phenomena which are not only of great scientific interest, but which are often of great importance to human society and its impact on the global ecology. Phenomena of interest to the meteorologist cover a considerable range of time and space scales, from the rapid formation of a tiny cloud droplet in moist air rising over a hill, to the variation over geological time scales of circulation features spanning the whole of the earth's atmosphere. The science of meteorology is directly relevant to important environmental issues such as global warming, ozone depletion, atmospheric pollution and energy resource management. This is apart from its obvious application to weather forecasting.

Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences
Emphasis in Meteorology
The science of meteorology seeks to understand the atmosphere and its phenomena by considering the forces that act on it, the processes that determining its behavior and the interaction between it and the earth beneath. This program provides a broad background in meteorology and stresses practical interpretation of weather data and the importance of meteorology to many aspects of human endeavor. Graduates of the meteorology program will be prepared for entry-level positions as meteorologists with government agencies and private companies, as weather forecasters with the United States Air Force and as team members with firms concerned with environmental monitoring. Meteorology is also an excellent major for individuals planning careers in either civilian or military aviation. The program also provides the background necessary for admission to graduate programs in the atmospheric sciences.
