New Approaches to Meteorology Education Course for University Faculty Most of the required meteorology courses are now characterized by a lecture format

COMET Faculty Class Announcement Announces a Summer 2002 Course:
New Approaches to Meteorology Education Course for University Faculty Boulder, Colorado, 12-16 August 2002
Purpose of the Course
The confluence of a national call for improving undergraduate education (e.g., Scrutiny of Undergraduate Geoscience Education, Shaping the Future, and Geoscience Education: A Recommended Strategy), the rapid development of technology, and the emergence of new models of how students learn have created a climate for a reassessment of how the foundation courses in undergraduate meteorology programs are taught. Most of the required meteorology courses are now characterized by a lecture format which many educators have argued focuses on memorization of factual information that promotes the development of superficial understandings and inert knowledge. The goal for this course is to help faculty in undergraduate meteorology programs create more effective learning environments through the innovative use of technology and instructional strategies. Course Content The New Approaches to Meteorology Education course for University Faculty will use thermodynamics as the topic for hands-on learning for faculty seeking to improve the learning environments for students. Topics to be addressed will include: how students learn, demonstrating learning, establishing course goals and choosing instructional media. During this course, faculty will be exposed to tools such as streaming media, portfolio assessment, and course managers. They will also be introduced to resources from the meteorology community such as the COMET multimedia data base, interactive java activities and MetApps. The faculty will use contemporary pedagogies to create group projects that will be pilot versions of innovative approaches to helping students understand principles of atmospheric thermodynamics.

TV WEATHER: AMS AND NWA SEAL FAQ
METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY
1. What is the NWA seal?
This is a seal offered by the National Weather Association. This seal represents that the TV weather personality is competent at both basic meteorology knowledge and on-air performance.
2. When should I apply for NWA seal?
Once you have completed or have sufficient knowledge in the courses (Introduction to Meteorology, Radar meteorology, Satellite Meteorology, Severe Weather, and Climatology) along with having 2-years full time TV weather experience.
3. Does the NWA seal deem one a meteorologist by the meteorological community?
The NWA seal by itself does not classify one as a meteorologist. The NWA seal is a "weathercasters" seal and is thus named so.
4. Why should I get the NWA seal?
It is often viewed as showing competency in on-air performance combined with basic meteorology knowledge (above those without any seals). It is something to add to the resume' for job promotion and for job searching. 5. Where can I get information from the NWA about their seal?

ON-CAMPUS METEOROLOGY PROGRAM FAQ
Mississippi State University
METEOROLOGIST JEFF HABY
FAQ BY TOPIC
Topic: Location
Where is Mississippi State?
Mississippi State is located in northeast Mississippi in the upland South. The surrounding area is very rural and is fairly densely vegetated. Mississippi State is located in the city of Starkville.
What major cities are near Mississippi State?
Jackon, MS. Birmingham, AL. and Memphis, TN. are each about a 2.5 hour drive. Atlanta and New Orleans are each about a 5 hour drive. Tuscaloosa (where the University of Alabama is located) is about a 1.5 hour drive.
How much commuting will I have to do on campus? All meteorology courses will be taken in the same building: Hilbun Hall. A bicycle is not necessary to get around campus. Most locations on campus are within easy walking distance. Car parking can be difficult unless you get to class early. Hilbun Hall Topic: Weather Does the program storm chase? We have the NOMISSIT storm spotters. They go out in teams when severe weather threatens. There is also a yearly Great Plains storm chase that lasts for about 2 weeks in May.
