Discovering the Past
with Metal Detectors

By Joseph Johanek
As we roam the desert looking for points of interest, most of us miss a golden opportunity to find items from the past. There are millions of pieces of history still buried in the Southwestern Deserts just of out of eyesight, but not out of the range of a metal detector. With a metal detector we can find old coins, artifacts or bottle dumps that are buried in the ground. Not all items of history are worth a lot of money, but they can have interest value nonetheless. During the past 20 years, I've found coins, toys, rings, watches and a variety of artifacts. Most of the memorable items I've found were not valuable, but all were very unique. I find that when I am metal detecting for items of history, I get the same thrill finding a mule shoe or old tin cup as I do finding an 1872 half-dollar. One time while treasure hunting in Pine Valley, California near an old homesteader cabin, I was using a long distance finder (Electroscope Detector), and it pointed to a large tree 100 feet away. So I took out my regular metal detector and got a strong signal under the tree. I dug down about 3 feet and found a buried cache of iron gears in assorted sizes and shapes. I determined that the gears came from an old piece of machinery.

    Testing the Viking Metal Detectors
The Vikings have landed on the Beach!!
Writes Zoe: " Well I am safely back from beach testing the Viking range down south in sunny Bournemouth, and what glorious weather it was to. After a very early morning rise, my assistant, Joanne Crump, and I arrived, hungry and ready for metal detecting, at this relaxing seaside resort. After we had demolished fried eggs on toast, paddled our feet in the Ice cold sea and fought off a swarm of Green Fly (don't ask) we decided to begin t he Viking metal detector test. Viking 1 Viking 1 was chosen first, as it's the most simple to use, and I thought it would be interesting to see how well it does compared to its simplicity. It didn't take long to understand its workings as it is a very basic model. Its very comfortable to use as it is lightweight and compact, and easy to assemble, perfect for children. No sooner had I started my hunt for treasure than Viking 1 picked up a signal,; no, it was not gold, but instead a tiny piece of led, which was about 5 inches long in the sand. I was impressed with the depth at which this had been detected, especially for this for the size of object - and in such a quick time. Naturally we also found several Ring pulls, and in a very short space of time, too.

metal Detector Survey Methodology. Excerpts from an unpublished manuscript byRich Green. General outline of metal detection reconnaissance procedures.
    http://www.har-indy.com/Methods.html
Metal Detection Reconnaissance Excerpts of an unpublished manuscript by Rich Green
From 1993 to the present, Historic Archaeological Research has directed and or supervised a number of archaeological investigations designed around the use of metal detector technology. The objective of each project has been to systematically recover metal artifacts in an effort to enhance the archaeological record. The author has nearly thirty years experience with metal detecting devices; the last eleven have been dedicated to this specific purpose. This is a 2004 revision of the original writing and is intended to provide a general outline for archaeologists considering this approach to survey of historic period sites. Metal Detector Classification The following is a brief discussion and description of the metal detectors used by HAR; although, there is no intention to go into great detail on this topic. There are perhaps hundreds of makes and models of metal detectors manufactured by several dozen domestic and foreign manufacturers, with a like number of features offered on this wide variety of instruments. In order to reduce variables and control survey parameters, metal detection instruments are selected for complimentary performance characteristics that are fundamental to archaeological reconnaissance. These types of detector have been classified as Type I, II and III. Special purpose instruments may also be useful under certain circumstances and are discussed in further detail below. Both the Type I and II metal detectors are VLF motion, full range discriminating detectors. Since we are not usually concerned with the instruments ability to discriminate (identify and reject) most metal items, discrimination control really isn't an issue. In fact, detectors intended for use by hobbyists to locate coins and the like are typically designed with features that make them less than desirable for archaeological survey work. Instruments with visual or audio target identification and or additional discrimination enhancements have been observed to skew sampling uniformity. These discrimination features should either be manually defeated by adjustment, or this kind of metal detector should be avoided altogether.
