RECOMMENDED READING ON THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST
A Guide to Introductory Readings on the Ancient Near Eastern World
A Collaborative Production of The Research Archives of the Oriental Institute The Oriental Institute Museum The Oriental Institute Museum Education Program Recommended Reading is a guide to introductory readings on the peoples and cultures of the ancient Near East. Some of the material included here ( Ancient Mesopotamia ) was originally published as the Resource Guide included with one of the three volumes ( Life in Ancient Egypt, Life in Ancient Nubia, Life in Ancient Mesopotamia ) of the Guides for Teachers Based on the Collections and Resources of the Oriental Institute Museum, University of Chicago (Chicago, 1996), produced by the Museum Education Program with the generous support of a grant from the Polk Bros. Foundation. We have made some additions and corrections, and slightly altered the structure of that Resources Guide for the purposes of providing this information on-line, and we expect to add additional material as needed. The Egyptian and Nubian lists have been developed by Emily Teeter in the course of many years of teaching and lecturing and will change as new material is published. In addition, we are planning to add more lists as we identify topics of interest to the public. We welcome your suggestions. This on-line version was coordinated and processed into HTML by Charles E. Jones, and is a publication of the

But the heavens are mute, and can only reflect our own mortal desires and aspirations. Milky Way and Andromeda Programme 1 Ever since our earliest moments on Earth, we’ve sought meaning in the stars. The Mesopotamians - in what is now Iraq - developed a system of predictive astronomy, where Priests scanned the skies for omens that might give clues to the King’s future. The ancient Egyptians believed that when they died, they became stars. So the sky became a region where Egyptian beliefs about royalty, divinity, birth and death all came together. With the help of archaeoastronomers, historians and archaeologists, Rajesh pieces together the astronomical systems operating in the Middle East six thousand years ago. For many of us today, light pollution has created a literal barrier between us and the stars. But that shouldn’t blind us to the extraordinary astronomical achievements of ancient civilisations who had Stars in their Eyes.

Archimedia I- Architecture in Ancient Near East
The object of the Archimedia project is to allow students to understand what ancient buildings looked like and how they were constructed. It does this by displaying numerous views, plans and sections, as well as axonometric and computerized reconstructions of these buildings. The project concentrates on buildings from Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia. It is organized according to each building, and includes a description of its materials and building techniques, followed by a visual comparison of all the buildings involved.

    Brown Seniors 'Crack' Cuneiform Tablets
Visitors to the John Hay Library sometimes ask, "How old is your oldest book?" Answer: 4,000+ years old. The Library holds 27 cuneiform tablets and cones from ancient Mesopotamia, none of which had been translated until two seniors in Visiting Professor Alice Slotsky's class, Ancient Scientific Writings: Akkadian, undertook an elective project to decipher two of the tablets. Their transliterations and translations are published below ABOUT CUNEIFORM WRITING. Cuneiform writing was, for close to 3000 years, one of the principal media of literate civilization. This almost matches the length of time for which our own alphabet has been in common use. Brown's collection of ancient Mesopotamian clay tablets covers this long span of time and includes both Sumerian and Akkadian examples, both of which were written in cuneiform script. The Sumerians and Akkadians lived harmoniously in the same geographical area, the region between the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers, but they spoke two dramatically different and unrelated languages. Sumerian was the language of a people who migrated to southern Mesopotamia in the late 4th millennium BC. To this day, we do not know to which language family it belongs. Akkadian, on the other hand, is the earliest attested member of the Semitic family of languages. It was written and spoken by both the Assyrians and Babylonians. The writing was invented by the Sumerians and subsequently adapted for Akkadian and other languages, including Elamite in Iran and Hittite in Anatolia.

    116. Thierry Urbain's Photographs: Desert Archeologies
Photographs of architecture, archaeology, and landscape from the ancient mesopotamia.
    http://www.ixoft.com/photo/
The photographs presented here are part of a work process which, since 1985, is focused on architecture, archeology and landscape.
Situated in the Middle-East or in ancient Mesopotamia, these architectures have always appeared to me as hieratic and timeless locations open to fiction and human science in which geography and history might be presented as utopias.
The exotic often looks for the bizarre, the strange, in a word for the sensational and plays upon the chock of geographic distance... I prefer the intimacy of an interior vision: the desert which is at once an alibi and a liberator, a privileged place to know oneself.
One must be worthy of the desert the touareg tell us: during the voyage each is supposed to discern that which he has brought with him. Our innermost visions are tenacious and accompany us often in spite of ourselves.
All these ascetic architectures of remote places do not intend to be anecdotal, exotic or demonstrative. Conversely, their archetypal forms allow us to rebuild time and space according to our own proper desire and to superpose to the photographic reality the equivalence of an interior landscape. The image is not of scientific meaning but simply poetic. Architecture is not the object of a study, but rather it brings to light through space the lines and geometry. Poetry resides in sobriety of the location and the image, in their holy character, in the peaceful and calm atmosphere fulfilled by the presence of lifeless civilizations whose relics will remain mysterious.
