Mesopotamia - Geography
Mesopotamia is located in the Fertile Crescent, the arc of land that curves from the eastern Mediterranean Sea to the Persian Gulf. Traders, nomadic herders, and invaders all easily overcame the few natural barriers around the Fertile Crescent. As a result, the region became a crossroad where people and ideas met. Each new group that arrived made its own significant contribution to the history of the region. Mesopotamia is defined between the Tigris River and the Euphrates River, partly in present day Iraq. The word Mesopotamia means "between the rivers" in Greeks.
Mesopotamia has also been called the "Cradle of Civilization." That is because a lot of "firsts" happened in Mesopotamia, an upside-down Fertile Crescent looks like a cradle, and the Tigris and Euphrates River look as if they're "cradling" Mesopotamia.

"The Parthian Empire is a fascinating period of Persian history closely connected to Greece and Rome. Ruling from 247 B.C. to A.D. 228 in ancient Persia (Iran), the Parthians defeated Alexander the Great's successors, the Seleucids, conquered most of the Middle East and southwest Asia, and built Parthia into an Eastern superpower. The Parthian empire revived the greatness of the Achaemenid empire and counterbalanced Rome's hegemony in the West. Parthia at one time occupied areas now in Iran, Iraq,Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaidzhan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Israel." The Parthians

"In the wake of Alexander of Macedonia's conquest of Persia in the late 4th century B. C., the Achaemenid dynasty ended. However within a hundred years a new group, the Parthians, were able to re-establish an Iranian empire which rivaled Rome in the Near East. Below is a Roman description of the Parthians, which indicates that the Parthians, like the Shang and Chou in China, were a nomadic people who established an imperial dynasty." I. Sales and Purchases Contract for the Sale of a Slave, Reign of Rim-Sin, c. 2300 B.C. In this transaction the sellers simply guarantee to make no further claim upon the slave. It dates from about 2300 B.C., and is interesting as an index of the legal development of that far-off time. Sini-Ishtar has bought a slave, Ea-tappi by name, from Ilu-elatti, and Akhia, his son, and has paid ten shekels of Silver, the price agreed. Ilu-elatti, and Akhia, his son, will not set up a future claim on the slave. The tenth of Kisilimu, the year when Rim-Sin, the king, overcame the hostile enemies. Contract for the Sale of Real Estate, Sumer, c. 2000 B.C.

Ancient Tablets, Ancient Graves:
Accessing Women's Lives in Mesopotamia
womeninworldhistory.com
This lesson is in response to a communication from a Napa, California teacher who says that her textbook is "woefully remiss in including roles, contributions and lives of women" in Mesopotamia. Can this statement be made about your textbook too? In general, women's rights in Mesopotamia were not equal to those of men. But in early periods women were free to go out to the marketplaces, buy and sell, attend to legal matters for their absent men, own their own property, borrow and lend, and engage in business for themselves. High status women, such as priestesses and members of royal families, might learn to read and write and be given considerable administrative authority. Numerous powerful goddesses were worshiped; in some city states they were the primary deities. Women's position varied between city-states and changed over time. There was an enormous gap between the rights of high and low status women (almost half the population in the late Babylonian period were slaves), and female power and freedom sharply diminished during the Assyrian era. The first evidence of laws requiring the public veiling of elite women come from this period. Read the following excerpts gleaned from Mesopotamian cuneiform tablets and artifacts. Then find the sentence, phrase or idea that shows:

    Be an Archaeologist
Mixed Up Pots: Decorate five or six old clay flower pots with paint or magic markets. Put all the pots in a brown paper bag, and gently hit the pots with a hammer. Shake the bag. Remove half the pieces. Using glue, try to put together the pieces into something that "seems" to make sense. Submitted by: Barbara D Martin, California, USA Mystery Object: Place a "mystery" object inside a shoebox. Secure the lid. Have your kids work in small groups. Create as many shoeboxes as you have groups. Have the kids try to figure out what's inside without opening the shoe box, just as archaeologists have to do when they find a new mummy! Submitted by: Barbara D Martin, California, USA "Motel of Mysteries": This assignment is based on the book "Motel of Mysteries", which is an hilarious look at completely wrong interpretations of things found in a modern hotel by archaeologists in the future. After reading about 5 pages of the book to my kids, I have them all draw an everyday object of their own, then write a wrong interpretation of it. Makes a great bulletin board, and kids get a good idea of how things can be interpreted incorrectly! Submitted by: Barbara D Martin, California, USA

Recent Books on Women in Prehistory The role of women in prehistory is a subject of wide popular interest. Dahlberg's challenge of "man the hunter" as the primary catalyst for human civilization is now classic. Marija Gimbutas' theories of the ancient culture of Old Europe, before the invasion of warlike Indo Europeans, is the foundation for much of the more popular literature. Read these and more skeptical views for perspective. Posters of Goddesses Choose from among these posters of goddesses, some from Renaissance art, or art deco, or more modern images. Ancient Women Warriors Ancient History Guide, N. S. Gill, documents key women warriors of the ancient world.
