Goals The primary goals of the national, state, and local (chapter) mental health associations are:
  • Prevention of mental illness. Promotion of mental health. Improvement in the care and treatment of those suffering with mental and emotional illness.
  • These goals are accomplished through many varied programs based upon local, state, and national needs. History In 1909 Clifford Beers, a recovered mental patient, formed the National Committee for Mental Hygiene. Aided by William James, the Father of American Psychology, Beers and his committee combined with two other groups to form the National Association for Mental Health- known today as the National Mental Health Association. The symbol of the NMHA is a liberty bell. A bell, which was cast from actual chains and shackles used in mental institutions, rests in the lobby of the NMHA headquarters in Alexandria, Virginia, as a reminder of the progress made in the treatment and care of the mentally ill. Inscribed on the bell is this passage "Cast from shackles which bound them, this bell shall ring out hope for the mentally ill and victory over mental illness." Finances The MHA is a non-profit organization that provides free services. Funds are received through individual contributions, fundraising events, membership dues, bequests and memorials, United Way, District 12 business grants and allocations, and Dept. of Children and Families. The Mental Health Association affiliates directly with the National Mental Health Association, Inc. The association contributes to research for the "mentally ill" through its NARSAD participation.

People of all ages mistakenly assume that mental illness is a normal part of aging. This misguided thinking has serious implications, especially for midlife and older women. Consider one common illness: depression. Women are more than twice as likely to be diagnosed with depression and, on average, live six years longer than men, further expanding the opportunity for undiagnosed illness. As caregivers, midlife and older women also are often left to deal with undiagnosed and untreated mental health disorders in others.
    • Mental illness is not a normal part of aging. Mental illnesses are real, common and treatable. The more people know about mental health and aging, the more they can help.

As a Center, we wish to express our concern and support to those affected by the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina. With other groups from around the country, we are working to develop a strategic plan for assisting youth, families, and schools in need. We have begun the process by consulting with school districts hosting evacuated students on addressing trauma and grief among students and staff. We welcome any input from the school mental health community on ways to assist during the aftermath of the hurricane. Please call (410-706-0980 or 888-706-0980) or email the CSMHA with any suggestions.

This is an illustrated book, appropriate for elementary school children and younger adolescents. It describes a girl whose father loses his job and becomes depressed (or starts drinking). Although he does not seek treatment or improve, she is able to talk to other adults and learn that she is worthwhile. This book is useful for the child who must learn to cope with ongoing parental denial of a mental illness or drug problem. Daddy Doesn't Have to be a Giant Anymore by J R Thomas (1996) Clarion Books
This illustrated book is told from the elementary school aged daughter's point of view. It describes her reactions to her alcoholic father's mood swings and erratic behavior. She is present when family and friends arrange a supportive confrontation to break down the father's denial and get him into residential treatment. When he returns from the treatment, he is on the road to sobriety and is able to talk to his daughter about his past behavior.

The world health report The World Health Report, first published in 1995, is WHO's leading publication. Each year the report combines an expert assessment of global health, including statistics relating to all countries, with a focus on a specific subject. The main purpose of the report is to provide countries, donor agencies, international organizations and others with the information they need to help them make policy and funding decisions. The report is also offered to a wider audience, from universities, teaching hospitals and schools, to journalists and the public at large - anyone, in fact, with a professional or personal interest in international health issues. Outlining the World health report 2006 You are invited to participate in shaping the World health report 2006, the theme of which is the health workforce. World health report 2006 draft outline Current World Health Report The World Health Report 2005 – Make Every Mother and Child Count, says that this year almost 11 million children under five years of age will die from causes that are largely preventable. Among them are 4 million babies who will not survive the first month of life. At the same time, more than half a million women will die in pregnancy, childbirth or soon after. The report says that reducing this toll in line with the Millennium Development Goals depends largely on every mother and every child having the right to access to health care from pregnancy through childbirth, the neonatal period and childhood.
