Health and Psychosocial Instruments (HAPI)
Health and Psychosocial Instruments provides ready access to information on measurement instruments (i.e., questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes/ manuals, rating scales, projective techniques, vignettes/scenarios, tests) in the health fields, psychosocial sciences, organizational behavior, and library and information science. HAPI assists researchers, practitioners, educators, administrators, and evaluators, including students, to identify measures needed for research studies, grant proposals, client/patient assessment, class papers/projects, theses/dissertations, and program evaluation. By creating an organized resource of previously unavailable measurement information, HAPI: (a) provides a means of locating a variety of instruments, (b) helps to reduce inefficiency and cost, and (c) eliminates duplication and " reinvention of the wheel."
PsycINFO (HSLS affiliated users only)
Access to PsycINFO is through the OVID database collection. The PsycINFO database covers the professional and academic literature in psychology and related disciplines including medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, and other areas. Coverage is worldwide, and includes references and abstracts to over 1400 journals and dissertations in more than 30 languages, and to book chapters and books in the English language. Over 50,000 references are added annually. Popular literature is excluded. PsycLIT, available through the ULS, differs from PsycINFO in the following ways: (1) PsycLIT does not index dissertations or technical reports, and (2) PsycLIT is updated quarterly.

Mental Health Status of World Trade Center Rescue and Recovery Workers and Volunteers - New York City, July 2002August 2004
After the September 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC), a comprehensive screening program was established to evaluate the physical and mental health of rescue and recovery workers and volunteers. Persons were eligible for this program if they participated in the WTC rescue or recovery efforts and met specific time criteria for exposure to the site. During July 16, 2002August 6, 2004, the program evaluated 11,768 workers and volunteers. This report summarizes data analyzed from a subset of 1,138 of the 11,768 participants evaluated at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine during July 16December 31, 2002. On the basis of one or more standardized screening questionnaires, approximately half (51%) of participants met threshold criteria for a clinical mental health evaluation. Continued surveillance is needed to assess the long-term psychological impact of the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks and to determine needs for continued treatment. The program was approved by an institutional review board, and informed consent was obtained for data aggregation and analyses. Participants were asked to complete standardized, self-administered questionnaires that screened for symptoms of anticipated postdisaster mental health conditions. The questionnaires used were the General Health Questionnaire-28 (GHQ), which identifies general psychiatric symptoms (

    Chapter 6
    Organizing and Financing
    Mental Health Services
There are four main sections in this chapter. The first section provides an overview of the current system of mental health services. It describes where people get care and how they use services. The next section presents information on the costs of care and trends in spending. The third section discusses the dynamics of insurance financing and managed care. It also addresses both positive and adverse effects of managed care on access and quality and describes efforts to guard against untoward consequences of aggressive cost-containment policies. The final section documents some of the inequities between general medical and mental health care and describes efforts to correct them through legislation, regulation, and financing changes.
