We provide a wide range of community and hospital based mental health services for children and adults. Our 1700 staff have a wide range of backgrounds and diverse qualifications to contribute to the care and treatment of our service users. We have bases for our community teams across the county who provide day care and outpatient services. Clinical mental health services are managed by public hospitals and provide assessment, diagnosis, treatment and clinical case management to people with a serious mental illness. Psychiatric disability rehabilitation and support services are provided by non-government community organisations. Specialist clinical mental health services in Victoria are provided on an area basis, and are often referred to as area mental health services (AMHS). They include adult mental health services, child and adolescent mental health services, and aged persons mental health services. Each of these service categories provides inpatient psychiatric services, in addition to a range of residential and other community-based services.
Target group
Adult specialist mental health services are aimed primarily at people with serious mental illness or mental disorder who have associated significant levels of disturbance and psychosocial disability due to their illness or disorder. Commonly these will be people with a diagnosis of a major mental illness, such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, but will also include some people with other conditions such as severe personality disorder, severe anxiety disorder, or those who present in situational crisis that may lead to self-harm or inappropriate behaviour towards others. The distinguishing factor is the level of severity of the disturbance and impairment. Increasingly, adult mental health service consumers have more than one disorder, with drug and alcohol related disorders (dual diagnosis) being most prevalent.

Message from the Secretary of Health and Human Services
The United States leads the world in understanding the importance of overall health and well-being to the strength of a Nation and its people. What we are coming to realize is that mental health is absolutely essential to achieving prosperity. According to the landmark "Global Burden of Disease" study, commissioned by the World Health Organization and the World Bank, 4 of the 10 leading causes of disability for persons age 5 and older are mental disorders. Among developed nations, including the United States, major depression is the leading cause of disability. Also near the top of these rankings are manic-depressive illness, schizophrenia, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. Mental disorders also are tragic contributors to mortality, with suicide perennially representing one of the leading preventable causes of death in the United States and worldwide. Now, with the publication of this first Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health, we are poised to take what we know and to advance the state of mental health in the Nation. We can with great confidence encourage individuals to seek treatment when they find themselves experiencing the signs and symptoms of mental distress. Research has given us effective treatments and service delivery strategies for many mental disorders. An array of safe and potent medications and psychosocial interventions, typically used in combination, allow us to effectively treat most mental disorders.

Telephone-Administered Psychotherapy for Depression Mohr and colleagues examined telephone-administered psychotherapy for depression in disabled patients with multiple sclerosis. Both telephone-administered cognitive behavioral therapy (T-CBT) and telephone-administered supportive emotion-focused therapy, which encouraged emotional expression and prohibited cognitive-behavioral interventions, produced significant improvements. The T-CBT produced superior outcomes on 3 measures of depression and a measure of positive affect.

Two-Year Outcomes for Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy in Individuals With Bipolar I Disorder Frank and colleagues investigated the efficacy of interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) in comparison with an intensive clinical management approach as acute and maintenance treatments for patients with bipolar I disorder. They found that acute IPSRT led to longer time without a new affective episode during the 2-year maintenance phase.

Five year treatment study funded by National Institute of mental health and coordinated by Massachusetts general Hospital.
http://www.stepbd.org
STEP-BD is the largest treatment study ever conducted for bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness. It is a long-term outpatient project that aims to find out which treatments, or combinations of treatments, are most effective for treating episodes of depression and mania and for preventing recurrent episodes. The five-year project will enroll approximately 5,000 volunteers with bipolar disorder into the care of specially trained clinicians. Select a link below to learn more about the STEP-BD program. You have entered a web site that describes an NIMH-funded collaborative study on the treatment of bipolar disorder. If you are seeking immediate help for treatment of bipolar disorder, we recommend that you contact your clinician or your nearest emergency room. This web site is not set up to provide help or advice to individuals about their bipolar disorder, nor to family members or friends of individuals with bipolar disorder.

Center for Science
in Society
Mental health is an increasingly significant intellectual and practical concern of people in both academic and social/cultural/political contexts. In recognition of this, Serendip, working with the Center for Science in Society, the School of Social Work and Social Research, and other groups at Bryn Mawr College are working together to encourage productive conversation and scholarship about issues of mental health, both general and specific. This, like other Serendip sections, is a work in progress, expected to evolve in response to interests and contributions of visitors. Our hope is that, over time, we will be providing access to useful resources on the web, papers, essays, and other locally produced materials, as well as on-line forums for discussion. Currently available are evolving lists of useful web resources orginally compiled by Christine Tubiak, a doctoral student at the Graduate School of Social W ork and Social Research, working with Paul Grobstein , Department of Biology, and James Martin, School of Social Work and Social Research, at Bryn Mawr College. Debbie Plotnick, now a graduate of the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research, helped to maintain the site until November 2004; Anneliese Butler, also a graduate student at the GSSWSR, stepped on board in August 2005. Suggestions for additions to these lists are welcome, and should be sent to Anneliese by clicking
