Fact sheet N°141
Revised May 2003
Meningococcal meningitis Overview Meningitis is an infection of the meninges, the thin lining that surrounds the brain and the spinal cord. Several different bacteria can cause meningitis and Neisseria meningitidis is one of the most important because of its potential to cause epidemics. Meningococcal disease was first described in 1805 when an outbreak swept through Geneva, Switzerland. The causative agent, Neisseria meningitidis (the meningococcus), was identified in 1887. Twelve subtypes or serogroups of N. meningitidis have been identified and four (N. meningitidis. A, B, C and W135) are recognized to cause epidemics. The pathogenicity, immunogenicity, and epidemic capabilities differ according to the serogroup. Thus the identification of the serogroup responsible of a sporadic case is crucial for epidemic containment. How is the disease transmitted The bacteria are transmitted from person to person through droplets of respiratory or throat secretions. Close and prolonged contact (e.g. kissing, sneezing and coughing on someone, living in close quarters or dormitories (military recruits, students), sharing eating or drinking utensils, etc.) facilitate the spread of the disease. The average incubation period is 4 days, ranging between 2 and 10 days.

Bacterial Meningitis
  • Bacterial meningitis is a serious infection of the fluid in the spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain. Bacterial meningitis is most commonly caused by one of three types of bacteria: Haemophilus influenzae type b, Neisseria meningitidis , and Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. The bacteria are spread by direct close contact with the discharges from the nose or throat of an infected person. Bacterial meningitis can be treated with antibiotics. Prevention depends on use of vaccines, rapid diagnosis, and prompt treatment of close personal contacts.
What is bacterial meningitis? Meningitis is an infection of the fluid in the spinal cord and the fluid that surrounds the brain. Meningitis is usually caused by an infection with a virus or a bacterium. Knowing whether meningitis is caused by a virus or a bacterium is important because of differences in the seriousness of the illness and the treatment needed. VIRAL MENINGITIS is usually relatively mild. It clears up within a week or two without specific treatment. Viral meningitis is also called aseptic meningitis. BACTERIAL MENINGITIS is much more serious. It can cause severe disease that can result in brain damage and even death.

What is meningitis?
If a glass tumbler is pressed firmly against a septicaemic rash, the rash will not fade and will show through the glass. If this happens, call a doctor immediately. The very mention of meningitis strikes fear into the heart of most parents in the UK. Such fears are understandable because meningitis is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord and can be a very serious illness.
Although most people recover from the disease, some are left deaf or blind, and in others it may prove fatal.
One of the biggest problems with meningitis is that it can develop very quickly. A child (or adult) can seem perfectly well and then, just a few hours later, be extremely ill with the disease. Another problem is that the symptoms can be difficult to distinguish from other, less serious infections.

meningitis
Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes (meninges) covering the brain and the spinal cord. Although the most common causes are infection (either bacterial or viral), chemical agents and even tumor cells may cause meningitis. Encephalitis and brain abscess can complicate infective meningitis. Major bacteria that cause meningitis are Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, staphylococcus and meningococcus. Meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae is known to occur in outbreaks, examples include outbreaks in dorms and military outbreaks. Community acquired cases of meningitis are usually caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, seen in elderly patients. Listeria monocytogenes and Neisseria meningitis are also other causes of community acquired meningitis. On the other hand, viruses are the most common cause of aseptic meningitis. 20,000 to 25,000 cases of bacterial meningitis are seen in the United States every year. Mostly adults are infected, where it can be community acquired or nosocomial. Vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae has reduced the incidence in children. The classical symptoms of meningitis are headache, neck stiffness and photophobia (the trio are called "meningism"). An altered level of consciousness or other neurological deficits may be present depending on the severity of the disease. A lumbar puncture to obtain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is usually indicated to determine the cause and direct appropriate treatment.

75. Information And Help On Meningococcal Meningitis
meningitis, especially meningococcal disease and septicaemia, are serious and dangerous lifethreatening diseases caused by Neisseria Meningitidis.
http://www.meningitis.com/
Home Meningitis is a serious threat.
Understand it better.
And learn about avoiding infection. Meningitis can be
prevented. Meningitis is an inflammation of the membranes (also known as "meninges") covering the brain and spinal cord. The disease often develops suddenly, without warning, and can rapidly lead to very serious and long-term medical complications or even death. Unfortunately, in its early stages, meningitis can be quite difficult to spot. At first, the symptoms may seem similar to other common ailments like an influenza, an ear infection or even a hangover. This is why it is important to better understand meningitis and its many causes. If more people are able to recognize the characteristics of the disease, perhaps more individuals can be spared its very serious after effects. Since those most susceptible to meningitis - infants and young children - are the least capable of understanding it, parents should keep themselves informed in order to protect them. On these pages, you can not only learn about the many forms of infection but also the available vaccinations which can offer considerable protection and prevent meningitis in the first place.

(nonbacterial meningitis) What is viral meningitis? Viral meningitis is an infection of the meninges (a thin lining covering the brain and spinal cord) by any one of a number of different viruses. It is a fairly common disease; 500-700 cases are reported each year in New York State. Almost all of the cases occur as single, isolated events. Outbreaks are rare. Who gets viral meningitis? Anyone can get viral meningitis but it occurs most often in children. Which viruses cause this form of meningitis? Approximately half of the cases in the United States are due to common enteroviruses (intestinal). Occasionally, children will have viral meningitis associated with mumps or herpes virus infection. Mosquito-borne viruses also account for a few cases each year. In many cases, the specific virus cannot be identified. How are the viruses that cause viral meningitis spread?

What is meningococcal meningitis?
Meningococcal disease is a severe bacterial infection of the bloodstream or meninges (a thin lining covering the brain and spinal cord) caused by the meningococcal germ.
Who gets meningococcal disease?
Anyone can get meningococcal disease, but it is more common in infants and children. For some adolescents, such as first-year college students living in dormitories, there is an increased risk of meningococcal disease. Every year in the United States, approximately 2,500 people are infected and 300 die from the disease. Other persons at increased risk include household contacts of a person known to have had this disease, immunocompromised people, and people traveling to parts of the world where meningococcal meningitis is prevalent.
