Mind-Body Therapy Guide

How to Meditate
Taken daily, it can untangle tension, fight fatigue and even lower your blood pressure. It can lift your spirits and help you find inner peace. What's more, it costs nothing, has no side effects and doesn't require medical help. The "treatment" is meditation, an ancient practice that has gained modern medical approval in many quarters. Research shows meditation can help relieve many arthritis symptoms, such as pain, anxiety, stress and depression, as well as ease the fatigue and insomnia associated with fibromyalgia. It affects many body processes connected with well being and relaxation. Recent studies suggest meditation may balance the immune system to help the body resist disease, and even heal. "There is significant data that meditation can enhance healing," says Saki Santorelli, executive director of the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care and Society at the University of Massachusetts in Worcester, Mass. "It can improve the quality of your life and may well reduce your medical and psychological symptoms," he says. In fact, your doctor may have already recommended adding meditation to your treatment regimen. These days, meditation is taught in many clinics, hospitals and HMOs, and endorsed by universities as prestigious as Harvard and Stanford. In just a few decades, it has gone from a counter-culture oddity to an accepted therapy for many chronic conditions. It is even being paid for by some cost-conscious insurers because it requires no special equipment or clothing, doesn't involve drugs, surgery or other pricey treatment and, according to some studies, it cuts down on office visits.

In fact, as taught by Buddha, Dhamma is nonsectarian and open to everyone. I have just returned from the Center in Chonburi, Thailand to Los Angeles. While there, I met several visiting Westerners, including a Swiss private banker, who were seeking a sanctuary from the hectic pace of their normal lives. It is they, who influenced me to create this page. On the most part, they were planning to stay for a few weeks; many stay much longer. One thing I noticed in common was that they all voiced their enthusiastic approval of the benefits they received from their practice of Vipassa-kammathana. This site is dedicated to my grandparents, Mr. Chua and Anong Jantrupon. Mr. Chua is 97 years of age and still helps guide the Center. Special thanks to Mr. Frank Tullius

Psychological State Changes in Meditation
James Kempf
(This article was extracted from the newsgroup talk.religion.buddhism) In couple previous note strings, some requests have come up for information on psychological studies of meditation and enlightenment. There have been many psychological studies on meditation over the years, mostly on TM and, recently, on vipassana. A study that I've found most helpful was done by Jack Engler and Daniel Brown, and is reported in the book "Transformations of Consciousness" by Ken Wilber, Jack Engler, and Daniel Brown (from Shambala Publications). I would highly recommend that anybody interested in psychology and meditation buy the book, because there is much more in it than the Brown/Engler study. For those who don't have access, here's a brief summary. Engler and Brown studied meditators who had gone through the 3 month retreat that the Insight Meditation Society runs every fall at their center in Barre, Mass. The study divided the retreat participants into three groups, with the teachers, who were not part of the retreat, as controls: 1) A group who had not exhibited any particular deepening of samadhi or vipassana during the retreat. They were primarily busy resolving psychological problems of varying depths that arose during the intense inner examination of the retreat.

The Physiology of Meditation
by Dr. Jooyoung Julia Shin, M.D.
Introduction
Eastern religious and secular groups, such as the Buddhists, Taoists, and the Indian Yogis have practiced meditation throughout history in order to achieve certain mental and physical ends; these include muscular relaxation and "clearing" the mind, as well as the more esoteric union with nature or God. For these practitioners, meditation further serves to reduce negative tensions in both conscious and subconscious realms, and facilitates the integration of an individual into her or his physical, social and psychological environment. A variety of these ideas were incorporated into the philosophy of the martial arts as they developed in Asia. In contrast to most exercise cultures, the martial arts actively strive to develop both the inner and outer individual, guided by a holistic view of human nature. The union of mind and body lies fundamental to martial art philosophy and practice, which consists of both mental and physical exercises. The practice of meditation characterizes the martial arts as a psychophysical engagement, as opposed to a purely physical activity. Although diverse types of meditation exist, all meditative techniques attempt to focus attention in a nonanalytical way without discursive or discriminating thought. By muting the analytical, reasoning functions of the mind one achieves a sort of non-discriminatory or relaxed awareness. In the martial arts, this state has been given various descriptions such as "Satori," "enlightenment," or "Zanshin."
