    INTERNATIONAL MEDITATION CENTRES
in the Tradition of Sayagyi U Ba Khin
There are six International Meditation Centres in the Sayagyi U Ba Khin Tradition. All were founded to provide facilities for the instruction and practice of Theravada Buddhist Meditation. Each of the centres in the West is a direct offshoot of the International Meditation Centre of Yangon, Myanmar (formerly Rangoon, Burma), which was founded by Sayagyi U Ba Khin. In addition to being a highly respected meditation teacher, Sayagyi U Ba Khin was the first Accountant General of Burma after Independence in 1948. All the centres are guided by Mother Sayamagyi, Sayagyi U Ba Khin's closest disciple, who has practised and taught meditation for more than fifty years and have carried on the tradition since Sayagyi U Ba Khin's demise in 1971. Ten-day residential courses are usually held once a month at IMC-UK and regularly at other centres, beginning on Friday evening and ending early on Monday morning. They are led by Mother Sayamagyi or by a Regional Teacher. The students who attend courses at the centres are from all walks of life, professions, religions, cultural backgrounds, races and countries. Anyone who comes with an open mind can gain the necessary confidence in the technique and in himself or herself. Thus, all can attain benefits which will be proportionate to the amount of balanced effort they make.

This site focuses on the Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhist Pantheon. Each of the beings named here represents a unique spiritual personality or essence. The principle beings are the five Dhyani Buddhas- the esoteric meditation Buddhas of the five colors found in The Tibetan Book of the Dead and other sources. The contemplative poetry presented here evokes the thoughts and images of these beings using the metaphor of music. Each poem can be looked at as a meditative exercise or visualization designed to tune the reader to the state of mind or spiritual environment of the being that is speaking. The point of view of each being is: First, of a spiritual personality describing his or her essential nature Second, of an actor describing his or her role in the Vajrayana tradition, and the spiritual environment in which action takes place Third, of a spiritual guide giving advice to the seeker

Transcendental Meditation (TM)
"As a student at Maharishi University of Management you discover that when you experience transcendental consciousness, you are experiencing the ocean of consciousness or intelligence, which is at the basis of the life and evolution of the universe." "Over 500 scientific studies conducted at more than 200 universities and research institutions in 33 countries have documented the benefits of Transcendental Meditation (TM) for mind, body, behavior, and environment." [Here is the reference, but only go there if you don't mind being trapped without a usable back button on your browser: The Transcendental Meditation (TM) Program at Maharishi University of Management An interesting claim, since "transcendental consciousness" is not a scientific concept, but a metaphysical one. Transcendental Meditation (TM ) is a set of Hindu meditation techniques introduced to the Western world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, dubbed the "giggling guru" because of his habit of constantly giggling during television interviews. TM allegedly brings the practitioner to a special state of consciousness often characterized as "enlightenment" or "bliss." The method involves entertaining a

Meditation (Dhyana)
5 fundamental points
of Yoga as taught by Swami Vishnu-devananda founder/ Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers When the surface of a lake is still, one can see to the bottom very clearly. This is impossible when the surface is agitated by waves. In the same way, when the mind is still, with no thoughts or desires, you can see the "Self" this is called " Yoga We can control the mental agitation by two means: by concentrating the mind either externally or internally. Internally, we focus on the "Self" or the consciousness of "I am". Externally, we focus on anything other than the "Self" or "I am". When we take up some recreation on putting the ball into the hole (golf), the other thoughts are slowed down or stilled. We feel we have played a good game when we have achieved perfect concentration. The happiness we experience comes, not because the ball being put in the hole eighteen times, but because we have achieved perfect concentration eighteen times. At that time, all the worries and problems of the world disappeared. The mental ability to concentrate is inherent to all; it is not extraordinary or mysterious. Meditation is not something that a Yogi has to teach you; you already have the ability to shut out thoughts.

The Benefits of Zen Meditation in Addiction and Recovery
A handbook for addicts and those in recovery, and their families.
Written by Mary Heath for the Zen Group of Western Australia, 1997. Foreword by Ross Bolleter Roshi
Foreword
I warmly recommend Mary Heath's article on The Benefits of Zen Meditation in Addiction and Recovery. It shows a sensitive awareness and understanding of the difficulties that people face when they decide to come off drugs and gives a range of strategies for helping this process, ranging from traditional Zen work with the breath and mindfulness and walking meditation, to her own discoveries. Taken together these provide a kit from which people in recovery can choose. Its presentation is vivid and straightforward making it an illuminating, practical, compassionate guide to the path of recovery. .......... Ross Bolleter
About Zen
Zen practice is about having time for yourself in a special way. When you take time off to go for a walk or have coffee with a friend, this is certainly having time for yourself, and is important. But Zen practice goes beyond that. To find out about the deepest parts, the most secret and difficult parts, the parts where beautiful things lie hidden, you may need special training. One method of training comes down to us from Sakyamuni Buddha, who lived in the sixth century B.C. in Northern India. He taught that although life is basically unsatisfactory and full of pain and suffering, there are still wonderment and joy to be found. To find the wonder you don't have to live a special sort of life by entering a monastery or cutting yourself off from family life and work (although you may do that briefly from time to time). By noticing and attending to what brings unhappiness you can gradually change your way of looking at things. Why do we suffer? This is the sort of reality most people would like to avoid. But when you give yourself time to look into these deep and secret parts, your lifestyle and relationships will start to work better. Then your life will come alive and blossom right where you are.

Meditation and Yoga
I have to confess that I'm no yogi! I did Iyengar-style Yoga fairly regularly for several years a long time ago, and I still do the occasional class to stop myself from getting too stiff. I would like to do it more regularly, but ... well you know how it is. Keeping up a regular mediation practice and running an online meditation center take up a lot of time. So I'm not setting myself up as some sort of an expert. What I do want to do is first say just a few words about the benefits I've experienced from yoga in relation to meditation, and then introduce some yoga asanas (postures) taught by Dharmapriya, who is a meditator and yoga teacher from Canada who now lives in Germany. I can see four ways in which yoga helped me in my meditation practice and life.
1. Flexibility
Meditating involves sitting still for a period of time maybe 10 minutes, or maybe 100 minutes. The increased flexibility that yoga brings helps the body to remain comfortable during this physical inactivity.
2. Energy

Buddhist Meditation in the Theravada tradition
Online Meditation Courses and Support since 1997
"Insight, is the intuitive light flashing forth and exposing the truth of impermanency, the suffering and the impersonal and unsubstantial nature of all corporeal and mental phenomena of existence. It is Insight-wisdom that is the decisive liberating factor in Buddhism, though it has to be developed along with the two other trainings in morality and concentration. The culmination of Insight practice leads directly to the stages of Holiness. Insight is not the result of a mere intellectual understanding, but is won through direct meditative observation of one's own bodily and mental processes." - Ven. Nyanatiloka
Welcome to the Vipassana Fellowship.
Meditation Course
The online meditation course has been hosted here since 1997. Our 90 day course provides a clear and practical introduction to tranquillity and insight practices from the Theravada tradition. The course is usually offered 3 times each year. The New Year session is now open for registration.
Authentic Texts
All of the documents on this site take their lead from the Pali Canon ; the most authoritative record and guide to the historical Buddha's teachings. They are part of a living tradition that continues to flourish after two and a half millennia.
