Masters Degrees
Our MA programmes offer an introduction to and preparatory training for in-depth research in a range of different fields. All taught courses are offered both full time (one year) and part time (two years). The programmes are modular and carry a total credit weighting of 180 credits. The standard format for these programmes is a combination of four course units, two in each semester and all assessed by coursework, and a dissertation. Two of the course units taken are specialised options relating directly to the field of the student's chosen MA, and the third is normally devoted to Historiography. The fourth is a free choice selected from among all those available in the School of History or the other Humanities and Social Sciences Schools; a popular fourth-unit choice is the Bibliographic Project which enables you, with one-to-one supervision, to address some of the background to the subject of your dissertation. The dissertation, of 15-20,000 words on a topic chosen by you, is an extended piece of research pursued under the supervision of the member of faculty in whose area of expertise your subject falls. The School of History is collaborating with the Department of History at the University of Hull, to develop an innovative masters programme in the history of political discourse, 1500-1800. The programme uses a Virtual Research Environment to pool the expertise of faculty across HE institutions and enhance the student learning experience. To find out more, please visit the

A HERTFORDSHIRE DEMESNE OF WESTMINSTER ABBEY
profits, productivity and weather
by Dr Derek Vincent Stern; edited and with an introduction by Christopher Thornton
REVIEWS
"Christopher Thornton has carefully integrated the fruits of another quarter-century of scholarship and, more particularly, has written a first-rate introduction to the book setting out the significance of Stern's research. Was there a crisis of resources as population outstripped productivity at the end of the thirteenth century? What was the impact of the great famine of 1315-22? How did the Black Death affect agricultural practices? And what was the chronology of the leasing of demesnes in the late Middle Ages? Scholars will naturally turn to Stern's work, as to the many other case studies of medieval manorial practice, for answers. Stern's work chimes with more recent suggestions that, in spite of the fall of population after the Black Death, there was significant room for entrepreneurialism in local rural economies. But Stern avoids any suggestions that this manifestation of the post-plague "feudal reaction" created social and political tensions. Rather, his emphasis is on pragmatism and experimentation."
