    History in Film
Film is a uniquely exciting primary source for the historian of the twentieth century. From the first, flickering images of Louis Lumiere to the polished productions of the Dreamworks studio, cinema can give a remarkably direct sense of the past. At the same time, the interests of governments, studios, actors and directors can mean that a film is not a neutral historical document, but rather a biased source like any other - whether it is a crude Soviet propaganda film, or the subtly pro-American

    General Information and Course Requirements

This is essentially a lecture course, but questions, observations and discussions are encouraged.
The objective of this course is to examine the history of England from Roman times until 1603, the year in which Queen Elizabeth I, the last of the Tudor monarchs, died. Britain, as it is today, cannot really be understood without a knowledge of England's development between Roman times and the early seventeenth century. N.B.

    The Medieval English Longbow
by Robert E. Kaiser, M.A. This article was first published in the Journal of the Society of Archer-Antiquaries, volume 23, 1980.
Please read the notice! From the thirteenth until the sixteenth century, the national weapon of the English army was the longbow. It was this weapon which conquered Wales and Scotland, gave the English their victories in the Hundred Years War, and permitted England to replace France as the foremost military power in Medieval Europe. The longbow was the machine gun of the Middle Ages: accurate, deadly, possessed of a long-range and rapid rate of fire, the flight of its missilies was liken to a storm. Cheap and simple enough for the yeoman to own and master, it made him superior to a knight on the field of battle. Yet, important as this weapon was, most of our present day beliefs concerning it are based upon myth. There are many statistics available on the longbow, but few agree. The term longbow implies a weapon of greater length than the 4 foot bow used on the continent. Geoffrey Trease, author of The Condottieri , maintains the longbow used by the 14th century mercenary troops of Sir John Hawkwood "was as tall as themselves or a fraction taller".

They are a good place to start your course reading, but remember to go back to them when writing your essay and revising for the exam. Two works you might want to consider buying are: R. Causes Its basic cause was a dynastic quarrel that originated when the conquest of England by William of Normandy created a state lying on both sides of the English Channel. In the 14th cent. the English kings held the duchy of Guienne in France; they resented paying homage to the French kings, and they feared the increasing control exerted by the French crown over its great feudal vassals. The immediate causes of the Hundred Years War were the dissatisfaction of Edward III of England with the nonfulfillment by Philip VI of France of his pledges to restore a part of Guienne taken by Charles IV; the English attempts to control Flanders, an important market for English wool and a source of cloth; and Philip's support of Scotland against England. The War The war may be dated from 1337, when Edward III of England assumed the title of king of France, a title held by Philip VI. Edward first invaded France from the Low Countries (1339–40), winning small success on land but defeating (1340) a French fleet at the battle of

The Hundred Years' War (1336 - 1453) had its roots in a dynastic dispute. The last son of King Philip IV (The Fair) died in 1328, and the direct male line of the Capetians finally ended after almost 350 years. Philip however, had a daughter. This daughter, Isabella, had married King Edward II of England, and King Edward III was their son. He was therefore Philip's grandson, and successor in a direct line through his mother. What complicated matters was Salic law, compiled early in the 6th century by the Salians, a Frankish people that conquered Gaul in the 5th century . According to Salic law, women, or the descendants of kings' daughters, were barred from inheriting property (including the throne). This Frankish land law was extended to the throne to prevent the crown from passing out of the country through the marriage of a woman to a foreigner. It was based on this application of Salic law that Philip VI was duly crowned King of France.
