UCI Medical Center Stroke Center UCI Medical Center’s Stroke Center is the first center in Southern California and among the first in the nation to be certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations for stroke care. WHAT IS A STROKE? Strokes are today’s No. 1 reason for disability and the nation’s third leading cause of death. Each year about 730,000 people experience a new or recurrent stroke. Add to that 4 million more people – husbands, wives, children and friends – whose lives are suddenly altered by their loved ones’ debilitating condition. A stroke or “brain attack” is an interruption of blood flow to the brain. The attack can occur two ways. About 80 percent of strokes are ischemic, caused by a blood clot blocking a blood vessel in the brain. The remaining 20 percent are hemorrhagic, the result of a damaged blood vessel that bleeds into the brain. During a stroke, brain cells in the immediate area are deprived of oxygen and nutrients. The cells lose function and die. The result is sudden disability that can include pain, numbness, paralysis, speech or mental processing problems, even emotional difficulties.

Halamandaris, President will serve on the Task Force but appointed Barbara Citarella, President of RBC Limited and Mary St. Pierre, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs at NAHC to co-chair. The Task Force agreed on a plan which includes the following: writing to the Governors of the affected states to classify home care personnel as emergency responders; waiving licensure requirements so doctors, nurses and aides from other states can work and be paid for helping out in the respective states; and asking that home care personnel be given priority access to gasoline if it is rationed. 117. Medical International Rapid Response
Volunteer health care professionals available to countries requiring assistance on an urgent basis and to other charitable organizations doing medical relief work worldwide.
http://www.mirr.org
thisPage._location = "/default.asp";
Medical International Rapid Response (MIRR). MIRR was started by a group of anesthesiologists in Seattle, WA in November of 1998. The fall of that year was a particularly bad hurricane season in Central America, and several of us were looking for a rapid response surgical specialty group to help in the countries affected by hurricane Mitch. As anesthesiologists, we had a desire to work with a volunteer surgical team, and when such a team could not be found, we started MIRR.
We have established Medical International Rapid Response (MIRR) to provide emergency surgical and medical care as a charitable service for people in distress anywhere in the world regardless of nationality, race, religion and economic status. Our mission is to make volunteer health care professionals available to countries requiring assistance on an urgent basis and to other charitable organizations doing medical relief work worldwide. Our goal is to make an advanced medical team available to people in need worldwide within hours of natural disasters and other emergencies. We are a nonprofit, nondenominational and nonpolitical organization.
