Print View Titel Mechanics of materials Abstract Abstract: The programme Mechanics of Materials consists of a theme "Fracture Mechanics of Concrete and Rock (van Mier)" and a theme "Optimisation of Cement-based Materials (Stroeven)". In the first theme emphasis has been placed on the further development of the numerical lattice model. The methodology to determine the parameters, the influence of the degree of saturation and water pressure in hydraulic fracturing, as well as size scale effects in tensile fracture have been studied. In the second theme an experimental approach is being developed to optimize a wide range of concrete qualities based on sustainability. Fundamental studies into micro-mechanisms, damage evolution and fracture are being carried out.

Applied mechanics is a field of engineering that combines the fundamental physical sciences with powerful mathematical, numerical and experimental techniques to develop advanced materials and structures with enhanced load-carrying capability, improved resistance to failure, durability and reliability and, in general, optimized functionality under service conditions. Classical mechanics with its advanced developments in finite element analysis, fracture mechanics and sophisticated experimentation forms the under-pinnings of new high-technology developments in materials and systems.

Under the theme "Current Challenges in Mechanics of Materials," the four-day, NSF-supported, workshop will focus on issues of current research interest in the field of mechanics of materials. These include modeling, computations, and mechanics/materials challenges in the biological world. The detailed program and presentations can be found here The workshop aims to provide an excellent environment for the exchange of ideas and open discussions resulting from the presentation of the researchers' latest work, augmenting efforts to advance the research frontiers in this field. The meeting will serve as an opportunity to showcase some of the research performed at thie University of Wyoming; it will also permit a valuable interaction of the UW students with some of the best minds in the field. The organizers will archive the presentations in a form that can be easily disseminated to the community at large.

FDA Home Page CDRH Home Page Search CDRH A-Z Index ... Research Program Areas Program Area: Mechanics of Materials and Structures Scope: Background: As a result of the recent new healthcare industry practices to reuse single use devices (SUDs), OSEL scientists first evaluated the post-market device performance of balloon angioplasty catheters after single use at area cardiology centers. As a result of these and other studies, the issues of reuse have become an integral part of the pre-market review of reprocessed SUDs. Results of OSEL investigations provided vital information used in formulating Agency guidance on SUDs and opened but not used (OBNU) devices and has been used to develop training for field inspectors. As technology advances in the medical materials arena, it is critical for OSEL scientists and programs to maintain the expertise in these areas. The field of nanotechnology is presenting exciting challenges in composite materials. TEMPs present a variety of material issues as well as cellular response issues. To address the broad scope of materials, we have also worked with other FDA centers (CFSAN, CDER, and CBER) on a diverse range of products, such as blood filters, imaging agents, adhesives and packaging materials, as well as the decontamination of instruments that may have contacted Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD). We are also piloting some laboratory work on the effects of repeated sterilization on resorbable polymers which we hope to develop in the near future into a full project.

Light Water Reactors To continue safe operation of current light water reactors, the aging degradation of the reactor structures must be adequately understood and managed. Potential aging mechanisms include fatigue and environmentally assisted cracking of piping and pressure vessels, and irradiation-assisted stress corrosion cracking of reactor internals. Nonsensitized austenitic stainless steels become susceptible to intergranular failure after accumulation of a sufficient neutron fluence. More...
