Typical fields of work are aerospace, energy, manufacturing, machinery, robotics, and transportation. Because of the very broad nature of the discipline there is usually a high demand for mechanical engineers. A recent study indicated that approximately 40% of all engineering openings were for graduates of mechanical engineering. A Bachelor of Engineering program in mechanical engineering is offered by the Department of Mechanical Engineering To fully recognize the diversity of the field of Mechanical Engineering: two programs (Regular and Honors), three options (Aeronautical, Automation, and Design), and several minors are offered. Students with a strong interest in the basic sciences and a career in research and development should consider the Honors program. In contrast, the Regular program is structured for students aspiring towards an industry-oriented career. Graduates from both programs are equally qualified for careers in either research and development or industry. Students can also take any of the three options mentioned above, as well as a minor in the following areas: Arts, Biotechnology-Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Economics, Environmental Engineering, Management, Materials Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Technological Entrepreneurship and Software Engineering. For further information on this program, please refer to the Faculty of Engineering section on

89. Mechanical Engineering - Careers In ME
The Ohio State University s College of Engineering s mission to educate professionalsin engineering and architecture, to create and disseminate knowledge
http://www.mecheng.ohio-state.edu/students/careers.html
Careers in Mechanical Engineering Possibly the greatest single reason for studying Mechanical Engineering is that students become well prepared for employment in a wide range of exciting industries including aerospace, automotive, chemical, computers, electronics, fossil and nuclear power, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, robotics, and textiles. Mechanical Engineers are also found in upper management positions, in the legal and medical professions, and in research at the cutting edge in several important technical areas. Mechanical engineers find employment in eight broad classifications within the field: research, development, design, testing and evaluation, production and manufacturing, operation and maintenance, marketing and sales, and administration. The breadth of the Mechanical Engineering program also provides for greater mobility for career shifts later in life. Additionally, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) degree can open the door to postgraduate study in several engineering fields, such as business, law, and medicine. Mechanical engineering is a profession conceded with devices that perform a nearly infinite variety of tasks involving mechanical work and energy conversion. This includes the conversion of solar, chemical, or nuclear energy into mechanical work through various engines and powerplants; the transporting of energy via heat exchangers, pipelines, linkages, and air conditioners; and the harnessing of energy to perform tasks useful to society through land, sea, air, and space vehicles, machine tools, home appliances, and agricultural machinery. The mechanical engineer is employed in virtually every kind of industry to seek knowledge through research; to do creative design and development; and to construct, control, and manage the devices and systems needed by humanity.

Introduction Mechanical engineering, the broadest of all Engineering disciplines deals with design and production of tools, machines and all other mechanical equipment to be used in industries. The industry offers a wide choice of options extending across many interdisciplinary interdependent specialties. Mechanical engineering is concerned with all types of machinery in industries and all aspects of their mechanism and functioning; the design, development, construction, production, installation, operation and maintenance; such as large steam and gas turbines, components of thermal power stations, internal combustion engines, jet engines, machine tools, air conditioning and heating machines, refrigerators etc to name a few. They not only design and create new products, but also develop materials for them and ways of making them. The specialisations include in areas like thermal engineering, design, and production engineering etc. Mechanical engineers work mainly in manufacturing firms. They can find work in administrative and managerial positions in government departments or public and private sector industries or do research as well as teaching in Research and teaching institutes. They could also opt for technical sales / marketing or work as independent consultants.

Typically you first retain me as a consultant with priviledged communication. I help you collect evidence, then I study the evidence and form an opinion. PURPOSE AND GOALS
As one of the broadest engineering branches, the major requirements of mechanical engineering curriculum includes design and manufacturing of (1) energy, and (2) structures and motion in mechanical systems. The mechanical engineer designs machines, tools and their products with utilization of mechanical and thermal power. The work of mechanical engineers includes, but is not limited to, the following areas: machinery design and construction, design and analysis of thermal systems, manufacturing, instrumentation and controls, fluid and solid mechanics, plant engineering, materials specification and evaluation, research and development, and technical sales. Many mechanical engineers are promoted to management and administrative positions. The goals and objectives of the Department of Mechanical Engineering are to produce industrial, scientific, and technological leaders capable of systematically identifying, addressing, and solving technical problems whose solutions will benefit society. These objectives are accomplished by encouraging excellence in three basic areas: academics, professionalism, and ethics. All aspects of these areas are blended with engineering judgement to develop ways to utilize, economically and with concern for the environment and society, our global natural resources for the benefit of mankind. Because of the global consequences of many engineering endeavors, and because of the continually changing technological climate, the department emphasizes an integrated curriculum that overlaps other engineering branches and the physical sciences. Graduates of the mechanical engineering curriculum will be prepared to be technical leaders in tomorrow's society.
