Twenty-Fifth President 1897-1901
[Ida Saxton McKinley]

November 2001
Fast Fact: Under William McKinley the Nation gained its first overseas possessions. Biography: At the 1896 Republican Convention, in time of depression, the wealthy Cleveland businessman Marcus Alonzo Hanna ensured the nomination of his friend William McKinley as "the advance agent of prosperity." The Democrats, advocating the "free and unlimited coinage of both silver and gold"which would have mildly inflated the currencynominated William Jennings Bryan. While Hanna used large contributions from eastern Republicans frightened by Bryan's views on silver, McKinley met delegations on his front porch in Canton, Ohio. He won by the largest majority of popular votes since 1872. Born in Niles, Ohio, in 1843, McKinley briefly attended Allegheny College, and was teaching in a country school when the Civil War broke out. Enlisting as a private in the Union Army, he was mustered out at the end of the war as a brevet major of volunteers. He studied law, opened an office in Canton, Ohio, and
married Ida Saxton, daughter of a local banker.

United Church of Christ Keep in mind that in the table above, the % of the U.S. population for religious groups are current figures. Religious groups have had much different proportions at various time in U.S. history. One of the most over-represented religious groups among U.S. presidents is Unitarianism. Despite merging with Universalism in the 1960s, the combined proportion of Unitarian Universalists in the U.S. population is just 0.2% of the population (one in every 500 Americans). Yet there have been 4 Unitarian presidents. Another over-represented religious group among U.S. presidents is Dutch Reformed, by virtue of having two U.S. presidents, yet having only a small number of people left in the country who identify themselves as Reformed. The contemporary heir to the Dutch Reformed churches is the "Reformed Church in America," which has about 300,000 members in the U.S. and Canada. (Alternatively, one might count only a single president as Dutch Reformed, if Theodore Roosevelt is counted as an Episcopalian sources differ on this subject . Even just one Dutch Reformed president would constitute statistical over-representation.) After that, Disciples of Christ, Episcopalians, and Quakers have also had representation in the White House far outstripping their proportion of the U.S. population.

Bessel There are 14 U.S. Presidents who are generally considered to have been Freemasons. The "rating" in the following chart is from various polls of historians' views of U.S. Presidents that were conducted at various times. The details about these polls are shown at the bottom of this webpage. These polls were not related, so their ratings may not correlate completely with each other. However, there seems to be a general consensus among all the polls. For example, Abraham Lincoln is always rated #1, the greatest of all U.S. Presidents, and Warren G. Harding is always rated as the worst of all the U.S. Presidents who served in that office. Name Rating

    M c KINLEY, WILLIAM
, twenty-fifth president of the United States. Born in Ohio, McKinley attended Allegheny College in Pennsylvania until his ill health forced him to return to Ohio, where he taught school. When the Civil War came, McKinley, who was eighteen, joined Rutherford B. Hayes's regiment as a private and after four years of fighting was breveted a major. After the war, he studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1867. A staunch Republican and good campaigner, McKinley owed his rapid rise in Ohio politics to his friend Hayes. Although his district was strongly Democratic, McKinley was elected to serve in Congress from 1877 to 1883 and from 1885 to 1891, losing only in the Democratic landslide years of 1882 and 1890. In Congress he became the most conspicuous champion of protectionism and the primary author of the McKinley Tariff of 1890; he included in it (at the behest of James G. Blaine) a novel feature authorizing reciprocal trade agreements designed to enhance American exports abroad. Elected governor of Ohio in 1891 and 1893, McKinley was by 1896 a leading Republican, and aided by his political lieutenant Marcus Alonzo Hanna, he easily secured the presidential nomination. The Democratic party, led by William Jennings Bryan, was discredited, demoralized, and divided by the depression following the panic of 1893. Whereas Bryan wished to inflate the currency by the unlimited coinage of silver, McKinley stressed protection and prosperity, defended the gold standard, and triumphed decisively.
