THE McKINLEY ASSASSINATION HISTORICAL SITE
On September 6, 1901, in Buffalo, New York at the Pan-American Exposition, a young man with a slender face and blonde-brown hair walked up to the President of the United States in a greeter's line at the Temple of Music exhibit with a handkerchief bandaged around his right hand. Under the handkerchief was a .32 caliber Johnson revolver. Two quick shots rang out.
The young man who shot President William McKinley was a twenty-eight year old named LEON CZOLGOSZ (pronounced cholgosh). Czolgosz was an independent anarchist, who though having met with prominent anarchists of the day such as Emma Goldman, had no legitimate connection with them. The Anarchist movement fiercely believed that all rulers, governing officials, rich capitalists, and ordained clergy should be wiped out. Czolgosz believed the death of the President of the United States would generate positive press of his movement and send fear through other leaders warning them to change their ways.

He served in Congress from 1876 to 1890 and became a strong supporter of protective tariffs. McKinley was elected governor of Ohio in 1891, serving a second term in 1893. By this time, McKinley was considered an important national leader. In 1896, the Republican national convention nominated him for president, on a platform stressing protective tariffs and the maintenance of a monetary standard based on gold. Presidency
From the beginning of his administration, President McKinley was concerned about the Cuban insurrection. On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine was sunk on an official visit to Havana. President McKinley attempted to prevent war and endeavored to persuade the Spanish government to adopt a conciliatory policy with the Cuban insurrectionists. The Spanish government yielded too late to restrain the popular demand in the United States for intervention. On April 20, Congress adopted a resolution declaring war against Spain. A peace protocol ended hostilities on August 12, 1898. Under the peace treaty signed at Paris on December 10, 1898

Presidential Temperament
Excerpted from Presidential Temperament , by David Keirsey and Ray Choiniere
The year 1912 was a presidential election year, and former President Theodore Roosevelt was again campaigning for the nation's highest office. By the evening of October 14 his campaign had carried him to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was to deliver a speech in the city's public auditorium. The time was nearing for him to speak, so he strode from his hotel onto the sidewalk outside, where a car was waiting to take him to the auditorium. As Roosevelt walked toward the car a man suddenly stepped up to him and pointed a pistol at his heart. The gunman pulled the trigger and a bullet burst from the pistol and smashed its way into Roosevelt's chest. His shirt was suddenly spattered with red, and more blood immediately began seeping from the ugly hole. The bullet had come to rest against his rib cage, a mere half inch from his lungs. "He pinked me!" shouted Roosevelt, as bystanders rushed to subdue the gunman, John Shrank. They wrestled Shrank to the ground and then, seeing Roosevelt's bloody clothing, prepared to rush him to the hospital. But they found Teddy Roosevelt a more difficult man to deal with than the would-be assassin. "TR" adamantly refused to go for help. "You just stay where you are!" he thundered. "I am going to make this speech and you might as well compose yourself."

This brief conflict in 1898 between Spain and the United States arose out of Spanish policies in Cuba. However, many claim that yellow journalism was at least partially to blame with their pro-rebel sentiments and the way they dealt with the sinking of the Maine.

Calls for United States Intervention Abroad
McKinley’s first term also coincided with a movement away from traditional isolationism , which advocated avoiding alliances with other nations. Many in business began to favor expanded foreign trade to obtain new markets for their products. As foreign trade grew, so did demands for territorial expansion, so that markets could more easily be developed and controlled. Some people believed that the United States had a moral duty to use its power to help oppressed nations free themselves and construct democratic nations like the United States. Many people came to believe that the United States had a Manifest Destiny , or God-given right, to rule the western hemisphere. Although McKinley wanted peace, he made little effort to curb the growing sentiment for territorial expansion.

Election of 1896
An economic crisis called the panic of 1893, coming as it did with a Democratic president in office, made the Republicans optimistic about winning the presidency in 1896. In the congressional elections of 1894, McKinley made 371 speeches throughout the nation and was widely seen as man who could restore prosperity. Hanna left his private business to devote full time to McKinley’s candidacy. He did his work well, and on the first ballot (vote) at the Republican National Convention in 1896, McKinley was nominated for the presidency. Garret A. Hobart of New Jersey received the nomination for vice president.

The Assassination of William McKinley Anarchist Leon Czolgosz came to Buffalo, New York, with a mission. He believed that government was evil, and he planned to stamp out that evil, beginning at the top. By Wyatt Kingseed Leon Czolgosz stood in line and counted the people between him and the president of the United States. Nondescript, dressed in a dark suit, and wearing an innocent expression, Czolgosz (pronounced ch´lg´sh) looked younger than his 28 years. He had waited for more than two hours in 82-degree heat on September 6, 1901, for his turn to shake hands with President William McKinley, who was visiting the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. Cortelyou, always nervous about public receptions, tightened security as best he could. The people who wished to greet the president at the Temple had to file down a narrow aisle under the scrutiny of a special guard provided for the occasion. Outside, mounted police and soldiers controlled the massive crowd seeking entrance.

October 2003 Read an excerpt William McKinley's election in 1896 was a breakthrough. It marked the first time in two decades that the Republican party was able to solidify its majority, putting the GOP in a position to dominate American politics for a generation. Meanwhile, the presidency had been declining in prestige and power, and McKinley's election restored it to prominence. Phillips, the author of Wealth and Democracy and The Cousins' Wars , has long been fascinated with McKinley and the Republican party's cycles of power. He explains that McKinley's lackluster ratings have been sustained not by unjust biographers, but by a legacy of unfair criticism about his personality, his indirect style of governing, his Victorian middle-class demeanor, and his inability to inspire the American public. In this powerful reexamination of Mckin ley's life and presidency, Phillips argues convincingly that McKinley's accomplishments qualify him for promotion into the ranks of the near-great chief executives.
