GENERAL: William McKinley (1843-1901) was the 25th president of the United States. During his administration, the two important issues of tariff and currency were overshadowed by the Spanish-American War of 1898. Under his administration, the United States gained its first overseas possessions, presenting the country with new problems of world power and territorial expansion. BIOGRAPHY: William McKinley was born in Niles, Ohio, on January 29, 1843, the seventh child of William and Nancy McKinley. William briefly attended Allegheny College, and was teaching in a country school when the Civil War broke out. Following the war, he studied law, began practicing in Canton Ohio, and married Ida Saxton. At age 34, McKinley won a seat in Congress. He was appointed to the Ways and Means Committee. Those who served with him attest that in his votes, he often sided with the public and avoided private interests. During his 14-year tenure with the House, McKinley became a leading expert on tariffs. He later became governor of Ohio, serving two terms. As a congressman, governor and later, president, McKinley, a man of moderation and compromise, held firmly to two beliefs: favorable tariff to stimulate American business and limited coinage of silver.

After the war McKinley returned to Poland, and bent all his energy upon the study of law. He completed his preparatory reading at the Albany (New York) law school, and was admitted to the bar at Warren, Ohio, in March 1867. On the advice of an elder sister, who had been for several years a teacher in Canton, Stark county, Ohio, he began his law practice in that place, which was to be his permanent home. He identified himself immediately with the Republican party, campaigned in the Democratic county of Stark in favor of negro suffrage in 1867, and took part in the campaign work on behalf of Ulysses S. Arthur, Chester Alan - 21st U.S. President
Born 5 October 1829
Died 18 November 1886
Term 1881 to 1885
  • President Arthur signed the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. It broke the Treaty of 1880 with China which allowed Chinese immigrants to enter the U.S. While the Chinese Exclusion Act did halt immigration for 10 years and kept already immigrated Chinese from becoming citizens, Arthur had already vetoed a bill which would have banned any Chinese immigration for 20 years. In 1883 Buffalo Bill, who had become famous hunting buffalo to feed the crews who were laying track for the Transcontinental Railroad by the Union Pacific, organized the first of his wild west shows. These shows featured sharpshooter Annie Oakley and Sioux chief Sitting Bull. In 1883 President Arthur signed the Pendleton Act. This act reformed civil service, which was believed to be filled with politically connected individuals who didn’t really do any work. The Pendelton Act created exams for government jobs. It also created a Civil Service Commission to oversee the new competitive merit system. Chester Alan Arthur - portrait and biographical information at the White House web site.

Once, while waiting for ceremonies to begin at the dedication of a monument at the Antietam battlefield, he walked over to the edge of the platform and called down to an old veteran in blue, "Hello, comrade, I saw you in the crowd at Gettysburg last month when I spoke there, didn't I?" Astonished, the veteran exclaimed, "Yes, but how did you recognize me?" Queried about his memory afterward, McKinley shrugged it off: "Oh, I don't know, it just comes naturally." height McKinley was 5 feet 7 inches tall, shorter than the average man. He was ridiculed as a "little boy" when he ran for President in 1896 [ Comment: This is a clear illustration that politics always has been, and always will be, a nasty business. McKinley's manhood should not have been open to challenge, given that he enlisted in the Army at age 17, just weeks after the Civil War began at Ft. Sumter, and that he served in the field virtually the entire war, including the battles of South Mountain, Antietam, Winchester, Cedar Creek, and countless others [ cried in office [Interesting that McKinley advised to take advantage of a physiological fact to conceal from others that he had been crying.] [

    William McKinley
William McKinley (1843-1901), former Congressman and Governor of Ohio, won the 1896 election and became the 23rd U.S. President. As had earlier Midwestern Republican candidates, such as James Garfield and Rutherford B. Hayes, McKinley ran a front-porch campaign from his home in Canton, Ohio, greeting thousands of guests who arrived by rail. Unlike Bryan, he did not go out on the stump, but from his front steps he spoke almost dailyoften several times a dayto visitors and the press. Through telegraph and telephone, including new long distance telephone services, McKinley was in close touch daily with his campaign manager, Marcus Hanna , and with Republican headquarters in New York.
The text below is from Great Leaders and National Issues of 1896 , published during the campaign. Such biographies were popular, both to introduce candidates to the voters (though socialist and other supposedly "minor" candidates were often ignored) and to offer a model of manly achievement for America's youth. On all sides, such laudatory pieces appeared in newspapers, sometimes side-by-side with bitter editorial attacks and exaggerated caricatures directed against the same men.
McKinley's presidency (1896-1901) witnessed the Spanish-American War, and a long guerrilla conflict over the United States' resulting occupation of the Philippines. McKinley was re-elected in 1900, again running against

    William McKinley
    25th President
He was born in Niles, Ohio on January 29, 1845. McKinley was a Methodist. He was the first man in his hometown to volunteer when the Civil War broke out. He worked in a regiment commanded by another future president, Rutherford B. Hayes. William McKinley lost both children: Ida 4 months old and Katherine, 4 years old, in the 1870's. His wife was so devastated that she became an invalid for the rest of her life. Whenever his wife suffered an epileptic seizure in public, there was always one thing McKinley would do: throw a napkin over her face. He ignored protocol at official dinners by seating his wife at his right so he could help her if necessary. Captain Leonard Wood, assisting attending surgeon in Washington, D.C., treated Mrs. McKinley with skill and compassion and became close to the president. He refused to be photographed unless impeccably groomed. He refused to leave his invalid wife for long campaign tours, so his campaign manager arranged to have thousands of visitors travel to Canton. McKinley stood on his front porch and gave brief, well-rehearsed talks keyed to the interests of the delegations. He liked to wear a white vest and a lucky red carnation in his buttonhole.

    William McKinley
US President - 1897-1901 Courtesy of the National Guard At the 1896 Republican Convention, in time of depression, the wealthy Cleveland businessman Marcus Alonzo Hanna ensured the nomination of his friend William McKinley as "the advance agent of prosperity." The Democrats, advocating the "free and unlimited coinage of both silver and gold"which would have mildly inflated the currencynominated William Jennings Bryan. While Hanna used large contributions from eastern Republicans frightened by Bryan's views on silver, McKinley met delegations on his front porch in Canton, Ohio. He won by the largest majority of popular votes since 1872. Born in Niles, Ohio, in 1843, McKinley briefly attended Allegheny College, and was teaching in a country school when the Civil War broke out. Enlisting as a private in the Union Army, he was mustered out at the end of the war as a brevet major of volunteers. He studied law, opened an office in Canton, Ohio, and married Ida Saxton, daughter of a local banker.

McKinley was elected governor in 1891 and again in 1893. Two years later Hanna began a skillful and successful preconvention campaign to have McKinley nominated by the Republicans for president in 1896. The Democrats took a radical position and nominated William Jennings Bryan with a platform favoring free silver. Although McKinley had earlier favored bimetallism and voted for the Bland-Allison Act, he accepted a platform endorsing the gold standard, and the issue was squarely joined. Many conservative Democrats viewed their party's stand as reckless, and Hanna's handling of the campaign was a masterpiece of adroitness. Conservatism and McKinley won. The Republicans also had control of Congress, and in 1897 a thoroughgoing Republican tariff was adopted. Interest then swung to external affairs. There was much sympathy in the United States for the rebels in Cuba, who were seeking independence from Spain. The destruction of the battleship
