86. Dreamer Digest – DECEMBER 2004
joined in after school homework help and sports programming. 4, 930230 Field Trip to the Ancient Mayan Art Exhibit at the Legion of Honor
http://www.ihad-sf.org/Dreamer_newsletter37.html
MESSAGE FROM MS. ABBY Dear Parents, Guardians, and Dreamers,
Second Quarter Report Cards should have come out last week and should be mailed to your homes soon. The IHAD staff will again be meeting with each and every Dreamer to do academic advising with them. During academic advising we will set goals and create an action plan so that the Dreamers know what they need to do to achieve their goals by the time the final first semester grades come out in the end of January. On November 29th, our new Academic Program Coordinator Tony Rodgers will be starting two new classes for Dreamers at Aim High Academy. The first class is a literacy tutorial that will focus on social justice. This class is designed to increase students' understanding of social justice issues relevant to them such as sexism, ageism, racism, homophobia, multiculturalism, and environmental and community development issues. Exposing youth to culturally relevant material has been linked to increasing students' level of self-awareness, cultural sensitivity and sense of community. In addition to increasing their sense of self-worth, it is our hope that this tutorial will ignite a passion for reading in the participating students. The second class that Tony will be starting will be a special physical exercise (P.E.) class for boys that combines sports instruction with basic life skills such as empathy, impulse control and anger management. The goal of this class is to not only empower the boys with the necessary skills and tools to make them more productive as students but to launch them on the pathway to becoming positive and productive men.
