These symbols are shown below. The bar symbol represents 5, and the dots are 1's. The numbers can be written with the dots on top of horizontal lines . They may also be combined with shells for zero. Around 300 B.C., the Maya adopted a hierarchical system of government with rule by nobles and kings. This civilization developed into highly structured kingdoms during the Classic period, A.D. 200-900. Their society consisted of many independent states, each with a rural farming community and large urban sites built around ceremonial centers. It started to decline around A.D. 900 when - for reasons which are still largely a mystery - the southern Maya abandoned their cities. When the northern Maya were integrated into the Toltec society by A.D. 1200, the Maya dynasty finally came to a close, although some peripheral centers continued to thrive until the Spanish Conquest in the early sixteenth century. http://www.jaguar-sun.com/timeline.html
It is generally believed that what we recognize as the ancient Maya culture began around 300 AD as an offshoot of the Olmec civilization. The central Mexican city of Teotihucan traded with the Maya and its influence can clearly be seen in some Maya sites, such as Tikal. In fact, the collapse of Teotihucan in the sixth century had a notable effect on the Maya, causing a virtual standstill of new construction for several decades.
Between 600 AD and 800 AD , the Classic Maya theories have been proposed to explain this "collapse" including: over-population, extensive warfare, revolt of the farmer/laborer class, or any number of devastating natural disasters. Whatever the reason, its effect was contained to the central region
By the time of the Conquest, the Maya civilization was in its Post Classic phase and had reverted to an essentially Maya culture in scattered city-states. It was this lack of cohesion that would thwart the Spaniard's attempts to conquer the Maya. Although the Maya have endured repression and persecution in one form or another for the past 500 years, more than 6 million descendants still maintain a culture that is distinctly Maya in areas of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras.

THE ANCIENT MAYA Mysteries of a lost civilization The Maya of central America reached remarkable intellectual and artistic heights during the Classic period of their great civilization, between around AD 250 and 900. They built huge temples and pyramids, inscribed stone monuments, made major advances in mathematics and astronomy, and developed complex hieroglyphic scripts. But their great civilization was doomed to undergo a mysterious collapse that would leave their mighty temples and pyramids abandoned.... Tikal
During the Classic period of the Maya civilization, the great city of Tikal thrived in dense lowland jungle of what is now part of Guatemala. In the ceremonial heart of the city were palaces and lofty pyramids topped by temples. The Tikal pyramids include the highest known structure built in the Americas before the arrival of Europeans. Around AD 900, Tikal declined as Maya civilization in the region suffered the mysterious collapse that marked the end of their Classic period.
Temple I at Tikal - the Temple of the Great Jaguar - sits on a towering pyramid built over the tomb of King Hasaw Chan K'awil.

THE MAYA TODAY The enduring Maya The ancient Maya of central America built one of the greatest civilizations of the western hemisphere. When European adventurers reached the New World in the 16th century, their destruction of indigenous cultures like that of the Maya was one of the most catastrophic episodes in human history. Although the great days of the Maya civilization are gone, the Maya are not a vanished people. Millions still live in their old lands that include modern Guatemala and parts of Mexico. Many still adhere to ancient customs despite the repressive regimes imposed on them in the centuries since the Spanish conquest. Before the conquest, many Maya cities rose and fell during the years of their great civilization. Sites with mighty temples and palaces each declined in their own time to be replaced by other power centers. Arrival of the Spanish
The Spanish conquest was a time of traumatic subjugation. Certainly the Maya and other peoples of the New World like the Aztecs and Inca were themselves capable of brutalities, but they could not withstand the genocidal warfare inflicted by the Europeans with their firearms and horses. The destruction was worsened by the unintentional introduction of diseases such as smallpox, influenza and measles. Within a century, the indigenous population was reduced by 90 percent. The resilient Maya culture Despite the conquest and cultural repression, Guatemala and Mexico are still home to Maya who maintain many of their old customs and traditions, and continue to speak Mayan languages. Their struggle against encroaching European civilization has never really halted, although much of their culture and spirit has gone underground.

Ancient Maya Ancient Mayan Culture The Mayas were one of the most brilliant and powerful ancient indigenous civilization. Their ancient civilization was present from 2,000 BC to 1521 AD. The Maya world was composed of three layered domains: the heaven, the middleworld of earth, and the underworld. They believed that a lot of these regions were interconnected which produced sacred power. The sky was represented by a great crocodilian monster. This Cosmic Monster made the rains when it shed its blood in the supernatural counterpoint to the royal sacrifices on the earth below(Schele 1990). The Underworld was sometimes called Xbalba(Schele 1990), but it is possible that the original Mayan understanding was to believe that Xibalba as the "parallel unseen" Otherworld in which the Maya kings could pass in a trance. In all aspects, the life of the jungle became a major part of the Mayan. The jaguar is ever-present in the Mayan writing, religion and folklore. It also stood as the "companion spirit to the most powerful Lords". In addition, it was known as the Lord of the middleworld. It could as well as hunt by day and by night. The eagle was the chief predator in the upperworld. This animal was known as the Lord of the upperworld. The hummingbird was associated with the bloodletting ritual performed in worship to the gods. The bat represented the unknown, the night and the dark. The turtle was associated with the rain god and the maize god. The jungle also provided food, medicine, and building materials for the Mayas. Statues, cities, calendars and art were all major places where animals frequently appeared.

Ancient Maya History THE TIME OF EUROPEAN CONTACT The Spanish began their invasion into the regions now known as Central and South America from the mid- to late 1400s. Various groups of explorers and military personnel, known as the Conquistadores, continually entered into the region over many decades. In the sixteenth century, Hernán Cortés sent Pedro de Alvarado to investigate the rumors of rich lands in the area now known as the Republic of Guatemala. This particular region was inhabited by several independent nations of the indigenous people known as the Maya. When Alvardo attacked the Quiche¢ Maya in 1524, the Quiche¢ fought fiercely. However, due to the lack of the same level of weaponry, the powerful native people were eventually forced to surrender. The Quiche¢ kings were opting to promote peace with Alvardo. Once the Spanish forces were inside the fortified walls of Utatlán, however, Alvardo executed the royalty in front of the people. The Spanish then burned and leveled the city. The native people were scattered into the surrounding countryside. Many of the people fled to Chichicastenango. The ancient Quiche¢ had called this settlement Chuila¢ or the "Place of Nettles." Later on, the Spanish would name the town Santo Tomás.
