ANCIENT LANGUAGES AND SCRIPTS
After over 170 years since the decipherment by Champollion of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, inscriptions from antiquity continue to be discovered and old texts persist in yielding new insights. Some scripts such as Easter Island's rongo-rongo still seem to defy translation while the understanding of the ancient Mayan glyphs is beginning to flourish. The study of ancient languages and scripts is alive and well!
My interest in languages is widespread and includes several European languages, Arabic, Hebrew, Akkadian, Sumerian and those of Polynesia, along with Ancient Egyptian, of course. Regarding the latter, I am involved in a study of ancient Egyptian funerary cones. These ceramic and typically cone-shaped (though by no means exclusively so) objects are stamped with biographical funerary inscriptions and appear to have been a component in tomb architecture although their full function and meaning remain enigmatic. The inscriptions are very useful and have been the focus of most studies but a consideration of these objects apart from the texts themselves is rarely undertaken. My present study of these interesting objects views them not only as inscriptions, but as three-dimensional artifacts with great variety in terms of size, shape, color, and material.

I'm Jeeni Criscenzo, the author of a novel about the ancient Maya, Place of Mirrors . Many of the people who have read my book have asked me how they can learn more about the Maya. Some readers have said that they would have enjoyed my book more if they had a map of the places I described and a glossary of the Maya words used in the story. Since Place of Mirrors is based on actual historical people and events, some readers want to know which characters are real or fictional.
Every day, new people are getting caught up in this fascinating study. The fact that, in only twelve years, the great cycle of the Maya calendar will be completed, has piqued the curiosity of many.
I hope Jaguar Sun provides you with a basic introduction to the ancient and present day Maya culture and information to help in your understanding and appreciation of Place of Mirrors . If you are looking for more information, be sure to check the Resources section. I'll be adding to this site as time permits.
I enjoy receiving e-mail from students, teachers and others. When time permits, I try to respond to each of you. I welcome your input and feedback. If there is something you would like to see here, or a question you might have, please send me an e-mail at

(Nonas October) "Be quiet! The Roman calendar is the most perfect yet devised. It has twelve months."
"Except when it has thirteen, as this year."
"And all of these months have either thirty-one or twenty-nine days."
"Except Februarius, which has twenty-eight. Only this year, according to you, it has only twenty-four."
Steven Saylor Murder on the Appian Way, p. 191. EARLY FARMERS couldn't simply look at a wall calendar to see how many days until the last frost date. However, knowing there were approximately 12 moon cycles between one spring and the next, they could calculate how many lunar phases remained before planting season. Thus was born the concept of the 354 day lunar calendar, a concept eternally at odds with the approximately 365.25 day solar year. Blending time [iNsci14.ucsd.edu/~fillmore/blurbs/calendars1.html] derived from the motions of the rotating earth, the earth revolving around the sun, and the moon's passage as the earth's satellite is hard enough, but the [www.spiritweb.org/Spirit/mayan-calendar.html] Mayans had 17 cosmological calendars, some of which go back ten million years and require the services of astronomers, astrologers, geologists, and mathematicians to figure out. Introduction to Mayan Calendar Terminology [www.resonate.com/places/writings/mayan/calendar.htm] provides simplified information on some of the cycles and glyphs used in the Mayan calendars.

Guatemala is a country in which one can experience not only the modern advantages of life, but also the ancient touch of a valued civilization - The Mayan. In Guatemala City, one can shop around in many of the shopping malls.  Or one can simply take a short trip to Antigua Guatemala and experience the Colonial Era, which will leave you with an impression of having traveled to the past and experience what Colonial Guatemala was all about. Or take a trip to the town of San Lucas, which is a short 20 minutes away and wander through the local market.  We did not have the chance to visit Tikal, but if you do, go for it! You will never forget the experience.  The airfares to Tikal are a real bargain and you will be travelling back in time.  Or if you decide to take a three hour trip; well, then a trip to Panajachel is in order.  The experience will be better, if one crosses the Lake Atitlan and stays overnight at Santiago, the little town across the lake.  Trust me, you will feel as if you have actually crossed into a different world and when you wake up and take a walk in Santiago, the clouds do actually touch the ground.  Those will be memories that will be forever with you.

Maya Indians No Longer Hide
Ancient Faith Behind Catholicism
by Anita Snow SAN ANDRES ITZAPA, Guatemala (AP) - Maya Indians cross themselves in Roman Catholic fashion after walking miles to visit San Simon, a wooden idol seated in a chair, his fat cigar jutting from beneath a big hat. The shrine, 20 miles west of Guatemala City, is filled with smoke from multicolored candles - each signifying a prayer for the icon, whose origins are unclear. Photographs crowd the back wall. Such shrines to pagan saints are common throughout Latin America, where many Catholic priests have long tolerated the mixing of Christian and native rituals. They are especially prevalent in Guatemala, where about 60 percent of the population of 10.7 million is Maya. When Pope John Paul II arrives here Monday, he will find a Maya population that more openly practices the animist beliefs long veiled by the cloak of Catholicism. For the first time since Christianity arrived here five centuries ago, Guatemalan Indians are increasingly rejecting Christian worship in favor of ancestral rites, anthropologists and Maya activists say. "Many are returning to the Maya faith," said Vitalino Simolox, a Presbyterian minister. "I personally know three Catholic priests who privately practice the Maya theology."

The Mayan Prophecies
Published 1995 (c) by Adrian Gilbert and Maurice Cotterell Buy Online from Amazon
Short Overview.
The authors demonstrate how the Mayan Holy Number 1,366,560 days, known as the birth of Venus and the basis of their calendar, indicates ancient knowledge of sun spot cycles and their effect on the human race. They explore the popular myth of Quetzalcoatl and its origins in Maya ideas concerning the sun cycle. They show the links between the pre-Columbian civilizations of Central America and the Old World, in particular Egypt. Examining the archaeological record, they find further evidence for linking the origins of Mayan civilization with the mythical lost continent of Atlantis, which according to Plato was destroyed in a series of catastrophes. They reveal that the Mayan calendar prophesies the end of our own "Age of the Jaguar", the fifth and final "sun" in 2012 AD. This, according to Cotterell's sun-spot theories, will be brought about by a sudden reversal in the earth's magnetic field. The book is lavishly illustrated with 40 colour plates as well as many black and white pictures and diagrams. It is a book full of startling discoveries not only about the past and the seemingly remote civilization of the Maya but ourselves and the destiny of the human race.

PALMAREJO COMMUNITY ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROJECT Summer Field School in Honduras May 29-July 2, 2005 PACP en Español Student Testimonials This five-week summer research program will introduce students to the fascinating world of the ancient Maya and their neighbors through archaeological excavation of one of their villages, Palmarejo, located among beautiful tropical forest groves in northwestern Honduras Through assisting archaeologists in the field and laboratory, participants will be trained in the methods, theory, and ethics of archaeology. Participants also will learn about the cultures and history of Mesoamerica through seminars and field trips led by USF faculty, and will experience a new way of life as a result of living and working in a modern Central American community. The prehispanic site of Palmarejo, occupied during the seventh through tenth centuries A.D., is a sizable village composed of nearly 100 buildings that represent temples, palaces, and a ball court where an ancient ball game was played. Some of the tallest buildings surround plaza spaces where religious ceremonies were performed. There are also terraces bordering part of the site that were used for agriculture and for diverting rainfall into a large reservoir. The main settlement is surrounded by as many as 100 smaller towns and hamlets. Our excavations will focus on the elite residences at the site to learn how its inhabitants lived and how they were able to command the labor necessary to build their palaces and temples and to farm their fields.
