Overview The written history of Madagascar began in the seventh century A.D., when Arabs established trading posts along the northwest coast. European contact began in the 1500s, when Portuguese sea captain Diego Dias sighted the island after his ship became separated from a fleet bound for India. In the late 17th century, the French established trading posts along the east coast. From about 1774 to 1824, it was a favorite haunt for pirates, including Americans, one of whom brought Malagasy rice to South Carolina.
Beginning in the 1790s, Merina rulers succeeded in establishing hegemony over the major part of the island, including the coast. In 1817, the Merina ruler and the British governor of Mauritius concluded a treaty abolishing the slave trade, which had been important in Madagascar's economy. In return, the island received British military and financial assistance. British influence remained strong for several decades, during which the Merina court was converted to Presbyterianism, Congregationalism, and Anglicanism.
The British accepted the imposition of a French protectorate over Madagascar in 1885 in return for eventual control over Zanzibar (now part of Tanzania) and as part of an overall definition of spheres of influence in the area. Absolute French control over Madagascar was established by military force in 1895-96, and the Merina monarchy was abolished.

Hi SA mailinglist participants
The Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture, formerly known as the
African Cultural Centre, was officially inaugurated on 27 October 1986
following the
celebration, in 1985, of the 150th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery
i.e. the End of the Slave Apprenticeship period on 1 February 1835.
Some of the key objectives of the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture [Trust Fund] are: a) to preserve and promote African arts and culture; b) to preserve and promote Creole arts and culture; c) to do research and to reflect on the impact slavery has had in Mauritius; A Family History Unit was established at the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture where a Slave Demographic Database is used to assist the Mauritian people to trace their slave ancestry. Only a trickle of Islanders initially approached the Family History Unit in the first few years.

Speech by President Mandela to the National Assembly of the Republic of Mauritius
Port Louis, 12 September 1998 Mr. Speaker
Honourable Members of the National Assembly of Mauritius
Ladies and Gentlemen
It is a great honour and a privilege to have the opportunity to address the representatives of the Mauritius nation Yesterday, when we laid a wreath at Samadhi, it was deeply moving to see the symbols with which the Mauritian people have chosen to represent their nationhood. The bold affirmation of ties with the four main civilisations - African, Chinese, European and Indian) - which form the core of a nation which nonetheless has its own distinct Mauritian identity, is an inspiration to all South Africans. In a world in which new forms of discrimination and prejudice are emerging and generating violence and insecurity in many parts of the world, this proud celebration of unity in diversity is a beacon of hope. It is consistent with the solidarity of the Mauritian people with our struggle. With your help, and that of the international community as a whole, we have ended a system that used the diversity of South Africans to pit one against the other and deny the majority their basic rights. As we build a new nation out of the rich tapestry of our cultures, we are committed to realising those principles of tolerance and mutual respect and unity which your nation represents.

Report of the Working Group on Minorities The Working Group on Minorities (WG) undertook its first visit to Mauritius since its establishment in 1995. The visit took place from 7 to 10 September 2001 and the Group went to the main island of Mauritius as well as to Rodrigues Island. In addition to meetings with authorities, the mission also met with representatives of minority communities, journalists, representatives of NGOs and leaders of political parties. The report of the visit ( E/CN.4/Sub.2/AC.5/2002/2 , 3 April 2002) notes that the two primary issues during the visit were the constructive accommodation of the various ethnic groups on the main island of Mauritius, and plans for the autonomy of Rodrigues Island. With regard to the first issue, attention focussed on the legislation and its implementation in practice, including the representation of different communities in political and social life, and on the issues of languages and education. Concerning the second, the Group held discussions with representatives of the local population of Rodrigues Island. Information is provided in the report on the history of the country as well as on the current structure of government. The report notes that four main ethnic groups have constitutional recognition - Indo-Mauritians (68 per cent of the population), Creole (mostly Afro descendants, 27 per cent), Sino-Mauritians (3 per cent) and Franco-Mauritians (2 per cent). The religious composition of the population is mainly Hindu, Christian or Muslim, with approximately 3 per cent of the population adhering to other belief systems. English is the official language but the most commonly spoken languages are French and Creole.

Government Non-Citizen Business Home ... Contact Us Short History About Mauritius Mauritius was successively a French and a British Colony during the period 1715-1968. Prior to the French settlers there has been the Dutch, Portuguese, Arabs and Malays who never wished to colonize or were unsuccessful in colonizing the island. Arabs and Malays visited Mauritius during the 10th century while the Portuguese landed in the 16th century. The Dutch set foot on the island in 1638 and the island was named in honor of Prince Maurice de Nassau. The Dutch settlement lasted only 25 years and the Dutch abandoned the Island in 1710 after 2 unsuccessful attempts of colonisation. The island saw a further improvement in the number of merchant fleet under the British who captured the island in 1810 and renamed it Mauritius. The island was declared a British colony four years later by the Treaty of Paris and remained under British rule until 1968 when the island became independent. In 1992 Mauritius was declared a Republic and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nation. Since Independence, Mauritius is no more a sugar producing island only. Due to diversification of the economy, the island entered into a new phase of its development. There has been a shift from a-one-crop industry i.e. sugarcane to textiles, tourism, agriculture, offshore business activities and shortly to an IT development centre which will become the sixth pillar of the economy.

    Mauritius - HISTORY
Mauritius THE REPUBLIC OF MAURITIUS is a democratic and prosperous country whose entire population has ancestral origins elsewhere: Europe, Africa, India, and China. Until recently, the country's economy was dominated by the production and export of sugar, a legacy of its French and British colonial past. After independence in 1968, government-directed diversification efforts resulted in the rapid growth of tourism and a manufacturing sector producing mainly textiles for export. During French colonial rule, from 1767 to 1810, the capital and main port, Port Louis, became an important center for trade, privateering, and naval operations against the British. In addition, French planters established sugarcane estates and built up their fortunes at the expense of the labor of slaves brought from Africa. The French patois, or colloquial language, which evolved among these slaves and their freed descendants, referred to as Creole, has become the everyday language shared by most of the island's inhabitants. French is used in the media and literature, and the Franco-Mauritian descendants of the French settlers continue to dominate the sugar industry and economic life of modern Mauritius. The British captured the island in 1810 and gave up sovereignty when Mauritius became independent in 1968. During this period, the French plantation aristocracy maintained its economic, and, to a certain degree, its political prominence. The British abolished slavery but provided for cheap labor on the sugar estates by bringing nearly 500,000 indentured workers from the Indian subcontinent. The political history of Mauritius in the twentieth century revolves around the gradual economic and political empowerment of the island's Indian majority.

    * By MARC R. SPINDLER The present volume, Globalisation and the South-West Indian Ocean, includes the proceedings of the seminar carrying this title, held in Mauritius from 21 to 23 September 1998 and sponsored by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the International Institute for Asian Studies, the University of Mauritius, the Ministry of Art and Culture, Mauritius, and others. The occasion marked the 400 th anniversary of the Dutch landing on Mauritius, calling the island and the first settlement there after their Prince Maurits. The book's twenty-two contributions are arranged under three headings: I. 'The Dutch Presence in the South-West Indian Ocean', (subdivided into Dutch maritime history - Dutch Mauritius and the Dodo); II. 'Society, Economy and Culture in the South West Indian Ocean', again with two subdivisions (Socio-economic and historical aspects - Social and cultural aspects); and III. 'Contemporary Issues in the South-West Indian Ocean: Regional Integration and International Co-operation'. Five contributions are in French; all the others are in English. A good balance is attained reached between Western and regional scholars, each providing half of the contributions. A list of authors with some biographical data would have been useful, although it is true that some of them are well-known in the field and need no introduction.
