http://www.intnet.mu/iels/culture_mau.htm
Cultures and Languages of Mauritius Back to: People And Culture In consequence of the diverse origins of the population several cultures coexist in the Republic. Due to the fact that around two-thirds of the population is of Indian origin and a small percentage of Chinese origin means that the Mauritian society is very much Asian in character with corresponding values. But Western and African cultural components are indeed very much present in this society. Taken together, the Asian, African and Western cultural components shape the different strata of society. Settlers from France and their accompanying slaves from the African mainland brought with them their languages and cultures. The West has very much been present ever since through the French presence. Law and government was in French till 1810, date of the take over of the island by the British. For political reasons they left in place most of the French legal structure. Even notary documents continued to be written in French, a practice that endures till the present day. That language is still taught at schools, used in the press and publications. The French sugar oligarchy was not dispossessed of its wealth and status by the British and that meant the survival of French cultural influence in Mauritius. English was used mainly by government, in courts of law and eventually taught in schools alongside French. The tolerance of the British towards French and the introduction of English in Law, Government and education have ensured that eventually bilingualism would be common among a significant proportion of the population.

No discussion of Mauritius could ever be complete without a description of the national dance. The “sega” is a back and forth foot shuffle, as it was evolved on sandy beaches by the African slaves at the end of a hard working day. The rest of the body supplies the real zest and emotive movement and when danced with passion, the sega is genuinely erotic. It’s similar to the Caribbean calypso, the Latin American salsa and all three dance forms share the same African roots. Sega parties take place at the larger hotels and it’s usually a well choreographed production. And if you’re asked to join in, get into the spirit and dance! Art

Festivals
With all the cultural groups represented in Mauritius, scarcely a week passes that the island doesn’t host a historical, cultural or religious celebration or feast day. And the nicest part is, that visitors to the island are usually very welcome to join these celebrations. The most important festivals include: New Year Yaum un Nabi (celebrated in January)…the day of death of the Muslim Prophet Mohammed.

Date: Sun, 7 Sep 2003 13:30:32 +0200
Hi SA mailinglist participants
The Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture, formerly known as the
African Cultural Centre, was officially inaugurated on 27 October 1986
following the
celebration, in 1985, of the 150th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery
i.e. the End of the Slave Apprenticeship period on 1 February 1835.
Some of the key objectives of the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture [Trust Fund] are: a) to preserve and promote African arts and culture; b) to preserve and promote Creole arts and culture; c) to do research and to reflect on the impact slavery has had in Mauritius; A Family History Unit was established at the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture where a Slave Demographic Database is used to assist the Mauritian people to trace their slave ancestry. Only a trickle of Islanders initially approached the Family History Unit in the first few years.

Who is an African artist ?
Read Article Click Here
“In response to your comment of the Jamaican who is the African artist in residence, I feel that it is important to be tolerant of the idea that Africanism is not limited to the continent. People of the island of Jamaica are still of African descent, they just happen to live in the Caribbean . Let us not split hairs about where an African lives today, it is more important to maintain the bloodline of Africans throughout the Diaspora. In this 21st century there are too many other people trying to divide us, we can't afford to divide ourselves. Instead we should create alliances with the African artists from around the world!” Aida Ayer
