Holidays in Mauritius
Mauritius is the most accessible island in the Indian Ocean, boasting of a perfect tropical holiday trip at bargained and affordable prices for an exotic holiday trip. Finding yourself surrounded amidst spectacular scenerymiles of lush sugarcane plantations, mystical mountains, pretty cascading waterfalls and rainforests abound with coniferous trees and casuarinas, is a real extravaganza. Though nestled up as a small island alongside the big African continent, it's culture and lifestyle is influenced by British, Indian and French ties.
Bare, black volcanic peaks tower over the sugarcane fields, which cover about half of the island. The island satisfies the whims of sunbathers, beachcombers, sightseers, mountaineers, swimmers, yachtsmen, water-skiers, skin-divers, anglers, big game fishermen, philatelists, punters, golfers, gamblers, all night rovers and ultimate escapers. Take a tailormade holiday package to Mauritius and feel the breeze blowing through the palm trees on the beautiful tropical island paradise of Mauritius. Physical Location Mauritius is a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean lying in the east of Madagascar and southwest of India. Almost 11 times the size of Washington, DC, Mauritius' terrain is small coastal plain rising to discontinuous mountains encircling central plateau. With about 600 people per square kilometer, Mauritius has one of the highest population densities in the world. There is no monsoon season, though cyclones hit the island every 15 years or so between November and May.

The Mauritian Culture
History Culture Economy General Info The island of Mauritius has no indigenous culture. Their destiny was forged from centuries ago through descendants of slaves, immigrants, labourers and colonisers who have discovered a remarkable blend for peaceful living in the turmoil of the modern world. Mauritians are from many origins be they French, European, African, Indian, Chinese and English. The settlement of the island developed under French occupation during the 18th century. The population increased considerably between 1835 and 1865 with the arrival of Indian labourers recruited to work in the fields. After the Second World War, the "baby boom" and the decrease in infant mortality rate had a major influence on the demography of the country. The population growth rate, which was 3% in the 1960s, slowed down with the introduction of family planning campaigns and awareness through education. The population of Mauritius is expected to reach approximately 1.4 million by the end of the next two decades. The main religions present in Mauritius are Hinduism, Christianity, Islam and Bhuddism. There are also Anglicans, Adventists and other religious faiths. Mauritians practise their faiths freely and public holidays are opportunities to celebrate their main festivals.

It is Dalby's thesis that a Black Portuguese developed as a lingua franca in West Africa in the 15th century and spread around the globe as a maritime creole. That it was an African construct for communication not only between black and white but a trade language between indigeneous coastal people who spoke different languages. It set a pattern. Even today for every European or American able to speak an African language, millions of Africans are able to speak a European language. [Also even today a great number of people in West Africa are multi-lingual] Black Portuguese had a full century of development before the Dutch displaced the Portuguese in the slave trade. A similar phenomenon - Black Dutch = Afrikaans characterised speech communities in the Dutch Islands in the Caribbean and Surinam, it is the mother tongue of Cape Coloureds, not only of Afrikaners of SA. [ consult Dalby for linguistic arguments re phonological, grammatical and semantic structure reminiscent of many African languages though vocabulary derived from European language]. So too Black French which developed by the middle of the 17th C around the French bases and colonies on both sides of the Atlantic. Goodman points out the

Introduction
Mauritius is situated in the Indian Ocean, approximately 2,400 kilometres off the south east coast of Africa. The island, which is of volcanic origin, covers an area of 1,865 square kilometres. Coral reefs surround most of the coast except the south. The average temperature during daytime is 25 C and rarely under 13 C at night. There are two seasons - the Hot from November to April and the Warm from May to October.
Port Louis the Capital City - naturally grew to be the economic and administrative capital of Mauritius because of the superior quality of its harbour. The city underwent a second birth in the 1980s when post-independence economic stagnation finally gave way to bursting activity. The skyline consists of high-rising towers, which compete with buildings from the colonial times.
Mauritius is a plural society where all the ethnic groups present Hindus, Muslims, Creoles, Chinese and Europeans live in peace and where all the ancestral cultures have been preserved. These features make the island a unique place in the world.
Investment Climate
The manufacturing sector continues to offer good prospects to potential investors in the following areas: information technology, printing and publishing, electronics, precision engineering, jewellery, pharmaceuticals and health care, agro-based industry and high quality textiles and apparel. However, investment in the EPZ is not restricted to these sectors only and any project can be carried out after the promoter has secured the various clearances.

Culture of Mauritius The culture of the country reflects its diverse ethnic composition. There are many religious festivals, some important ones being (in random order) Divali (the hindu festival of lights, in October), Christmas, Cavadee (a penitence festival of the south Indian tradition of hinduism, in January), Eid ul Fitr (celebrating the end of the period of fasting in Islam. As the Islamic calendar does not correspond to the Gregorian calendar, the date of its celebration in the year tends to vary. In 2003 it was celebrated in November).
Sega is an indigenous musical form. As it started among slaves of African origin, it is conventionally believed to be of African origin. However, according to some observers, there is no easily found equivalent in mainland Africa to the hip-swaying style of sega dancing, and to the musical instruments used (notably the ravane, a piece of goatskin tightly drawn over a wooden hoop). Sega could therefore be of mixed origin.
Culture of Mauritius
In the countryside, where the population is predominantly of Indian origin, bhojpuri songs (from a rural dialect of Bihar province in India) are still popular and have been recast in modern forms.
