Mauritius History and Culture
History Mauritius was originally discovered by the Arabs as early as the 10th century but never stopped to settle it. The first attempt at colonisation was made by the Dutch who arrived in 1598 and named the island Mauritius after Prince Maurice of Nassau. The colony, however, never really flourished, and the Dutch departed for good in 1710, leaving in their wake the extinction of the dodo and the introduction of African slaves, Javan deer, wild boar, tobacco and sugar cane. In 1715, the French occupied the island which they renamed Isle de France. However, in 1810, the British launched a surprise attack against the French and conquered the island and reverted the name to Mauritius. It then won her independence from Britain on 12 March 1968, remaining within the Commonwealth.

Mauritius Introduction
Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean. Its chief island, also called Mauritius, lies about 800 kilometres east of Madagascar and about 4,000 kilometres southwest of India. Overpopulation is one of the country's problems. Sugar-cane fields cover about half of the island. Bare, black volcanic peaks tower over the sugarcane fields. Sugar is the island's chief product.

    Africa : Mauritius
While Arab and Malay sailors knew of Mauritius as early as the 10th century AD and Portuguese sailors first visited in the 16th century, the island was not colonized until 1638 by the Dutch. Mauritius was populated over the next few centuries by waves of traders, planters and their slaves, indentured laborers, merchants, and artisans. The island was named in honor of Prince Maurice of Nassau by the Dutch, who abandoned the colony in 1710. The French claimed Mauritius in 1715 and renamed it Ilea de France. It became a prosperous colony under the French East India Company. The French Government took control in 1767, and the island served as a naval and privateer base during the Napoleonic wars. In 1810, Mauritius was captured by the British, whose possession of the island was confirmed 4 years later by the Treaty of Paris. French institutions, including the Napoleonic code of law, were maintained. The French language is still used more widely than English. Mauritian Creoles trace their origins to the plantation owners and slaves who were brought to work the sugar fields. Indo-Mauritians are descended from Indian immigrants who arrived in the 19th century to work as indentured laborers after slavery was abolished in 1835. Included in the Indo-Mauritian community are Muslims (about 15% of the population) from the Indian subcontinent. The Franco-Mauritian elite control nearly all of the large sugar estates and are active in business and banking. As the Indian population became numerically dominant and the voting franchise was extended, political power shifted from the Franco-Mauritians and their Creole allies to the Hindus.

Abstract: 1. Introduction The Republic of Mauritius is a 2000 square kilometre island situated to the east coast of Madagascar. It has a per capita income of approximately US$ 3,000 and its major income comes from sugar, textiles and tourism. Despite its geographic location and its lack of natural resources, the country has successfully moved from an agricultural based economy to an agriculture/industry based economy due to its cheap labour force. However, the country can no longer provide such inexpensive labour and there is a need to move up-market by producing value added goods and services. In this context, it is vital for Mauritius to harness the use of telematics/Information Technology(IT) in order to remain competitive on the global market especially with the coming up of the GATT accord. There is very little understanding of the success factors of telematics in developing countries. Poor infrastructure, limited foreign exchange, lack of skilled personnel and little or no management commitment are believed to be some of the key factors that limit the proper use of IT. There is a strong belief that telematics can help in bridging the gap between the poor and rich nations by making the former 'leapfrog' both economic and social development. Yet, many developing countries, especially African states, have failed in exploiting the benefits of IT and there is evidence of underutilisation of IT equipment as well as failure of major IT projects [1, 2].

The island group was uninhabited until the 16th century, when it was occupied by a small Dutch force that named it after Prince Maurice of Nassau. It was abandoned in 1710 and then re-occupied five years later by the French who imported African slaves to work on the sugar plantations. Mauritius and its neighboring islands were captured by the British in 1810 and formally ceded by the 1814 Treaty of Paris. After the abolition of slavery in the 1830s, Indian laborers were imported and their descendants now comprise more than two-thirds of the population. Incorporated into the British Empire, Mauritius remained a colony until 1957, when it was granted internal self-government with an electoral system based on the Westminster model.
Both rose to prominence in the Mouvement Militant Mauricien Mauritian Labor Party (MLP) and the (PMSD) led by Gaetan Duval. The MMM eventually came to power in 1982 following a landslide general election victory. However, the administration was fraught with policy disagreements and personality clashes. People
Mauritius is a densely populated island of around 1.2 million people. It is a plural society where all the ethnic groups present: Hindus, Muslims, Creoles, Chinese and Europeans live in peace and where all the ancestral cultures have been preserved. These features make the island a unique place in the world.
    Religion
Mauritian society is noteworthy for its high degree of religious tolerance. Mauritians often share in the observances of religious groups other than their own. In part as a result of the multiplicity of religions, Mauritius has more than twenty national holidays. In addition, the government grants subsidies to all major religious groups according to their membership. According to the 1990 census, 49 percent of the population was Hindu, 27 percent Roman Catholic, 16 percent Muslim, and 0.5 percent Protestant; 7.5 percent belonged to other groups.
    Culture
While many countries claim they are cosmopolitan, only a few really qualify. Mauritius is one of the rare authentically cosmopolitan societies. Where else could so many towns and villages boast of a Catholic church, a Muslim mosque, and a Hindu temple within walking distance from each other? And if you are lucky, you might even find a Chinese pagoda in the vicinity! One little-known cemetery at Bambous hosts a burial ground with a Muslim and a ... Jewish section!!
A little history helps explain this peculiar mix. The French took over the island from the Dutch settlers (notorious for having eaten the Dodos down to the very last!) around 1715. The French brought over slaves from Africa (particularly from Senegal, Guinea, Mozambique and Madagascar) to work in the sugar-cane plantations. The Mauritian Creole, now in quasi-universal use on the island, probably evolved during those years as some sort of lingua franca between slaves and masters.
