Beneath the natural beauties of Mauritius's landscape, lies another, but sometime forgotten, gem: the Mauritian Culture, better yet, cultures. Going to its discovery can be a journey into some of the most fascinating and refined thousands year old ancestral traditions. It would be too simple to classify Mauritius as having one culture as so many unique and distinctive parts forms this whole. It is made up of the different customs and traditions of those who, during the last 400 years, have settled on these shores. Here Europe meets India, China, Africa and so on. Who would imagine that such unique and diversified customs thrives on such a small place? This rich diversity is found in every aspect of the Mauritian life. Churches can be found next to a mosque, Indian temples next to Chinese pagodas. Various Indian believes, Buddhist, Christian and Muslim festivals are celebrated with much fervour and devotion all year round by the different communities. Some of these celebrations can be quite spectacular like the fire-walking ceremony that is performed on the Cavadee day. Another proof of this rich diversity is in the variety of Mauritian dishes (cuisine). There are traditional western dishes coming from the colonial past of the island; alongside someone can discover delicate new taste and aromas of the more exotic, oriental dishes brought by the Indian and Chinese migrants. Some are unique to Mauritius, as various delicacies have also been adapted to suit the Mauritian taste, which combines the flavours of the East and finest of the West.

South Africa, located at the southernmost part of the African continent, is a country of long colonial history which is particularly marked by aparthied. Today, it has evolved into a spectacular nation visited by tourists from all over the globe mostly for the wild safaris, wildlife sanctuaries and the natural beauty it holds in its confines.
It is bordered to the north by Botswana and Zimbabwe, to the northeast by Mozambique and Swaziland and to the northwest by Namibia. On the east coastline lies the Indian Ocean, on the Southern coastline lies the confluence of the Indian and Atlantic Ocean is located on the western side. South Africa completely surrounds Lesotho.
South Africa is predominantly marked by elevations of over 914m (3,000 ft) and at least 40% of the surface is at an elevation of over 1,220m (4,000 ft). Sections of Johannesburg are 1,829m (6,000 ft) above sea level. Resembling an inverted saucer, the land rises steadily from west to east to the Drakensberg Mountains, the tallest of which is Mont-aux-Sources at 3,300m (10,823 ft).
The coastal belt in the west and south varies from 3 to 30 miles in width, is between 152m (500ft) to 182m (600ft) above sea level, and is very fertile, producing citrus fruits and grapes, particularly in the Western Cape. North of the coastal belt stretch, the Little and the Great Karoo are bounded by mountains and lie higher than the coastal belt, and are semi-arid to arid, merging into sandy wastes that ultimately join the Kalahari Desert.

Mauritius rests in gorgeous isolation in the bosom of the warmest ocean of all, the Indian Ocean, bounded by Africa, India and Australia. The country is ornamented with lovely bougainvillea and flame trees, violet moonscaped mountains, deep craters, wild waterfalls, rainbows and shooting stars, villages hidden in lush coastal vegetation, plateau towns with charming old colonial houses, flowers and trees growing out of the red earth in striking hues and everywhere there is green and golden cover of sugarcane.
Mauritius is also blessed with some of the most enchanting beaches, a large scope for shopping and warm, friendly people to welcome their visitors.

Mauritius Background The 1,865 square kilometre island is of volcanic origin, with coral reefs surrounding most of the coast except the south. The Dutch settled on the island in 1598, and named it Mauritius, in honour of their ruler, Prince Maurice de Nassau; although the island was probably visited by Arab traders before the 10th century.

    Culture in Mauritius
While many countries claim they are cosmopolitan, only a few really qualify. Mauritius is one of the rare authentically cosmopolitan societies. Where else could so many towns and villages boast of a catholic church, a Muslim mosque, and a Hindu temple within walking distance from each other? And if you are lucky, you might even find a Chinese pagoda in the vicinity! One little-known cemetery at Bambous hosts a burial ground with a Muslim and a ... Jewish section!!
A little history helps explain this peculiar mix: While there is some speculation that the island may have been known to Arab traders plying Indian Ocean trade routes in the 10th - 13th centuries, the remarkably large, lushly vegetated and completely uninhabited island was discovered by Portuguese explorers in the 16th century, and subsequently settled by the Dutch. The French took over the island in 1715 from the Dutch settlers, who are remembered primarily for having eaten the island's infamous population of flightless DODO BIRDS (which were native only to Mauritius) down to the very last. The French brought over slaves from Africa (particularly from Senegal, Guinea, Mozambique and Madagascar) to work in the sugar-cane plantations. The Mauritian Creole language, now in quasi-universal use in the island, probably evolved during those years as some sort of lingua franca between slaves and masters.
The British became very interested in the island in the early eighteenth century because it provided the perfect transit for ships en route to India. They eventually won the island over from the French in 1810. British rule was essentially administrative and the French colonials were allowed to stay. Things did not change much for the unfortunate African slaves, until yielding to the pressure of abolitionists, the colonists emancipated them in the 1830s-40s. To make up for this sudden labor shortage, the British brought indentured laborers from India (mainly Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat) to the island. Within a few decades, people of Indian origin comprised the majority population of the island.

Though her novel, The Rape of Sita (1994), won the prestigious Commonwealth Writer’s Prize, it was banned in Mauritius where Muslim pressure groups objected to its forceful feminism. Getting Rid of It (1997) was no less provocative, dealing as it does with the disposal of a foetus and the empowerment of women. And now with her new novel, Mutiny, Collen examines the themes of justice and repression, again with the emphasis on female vulnerability in a male-dominated society.

The protest meeting, which is also denouncing US foreign policy, was launched by human rights activist and former Mauritian Chief Justice Rajsoomer Lallah. Lallah urged all peoples to defend their sovereignty, and deplored the non-inclusion of ordinary workers during discussions on the stakes of AGOA.

Mauritius Culture Over half the population of Mauritius is Hindu and roughly another fifth is Muslim; both groups descend from labourers brought to the island by the British to work the cane fields. While some of the resident Chinese and Sino-Mauritians were also brought over as labourers, most came to Mauritius as entrepreneurs, and many still control the lion's share of village-based commerce. The remaining population is composed mainly of Cr©oles, descendants of African slaves, and Franco-Mauritians, the original settlers of the island. Franco-Mauritians, who make up about 2% of the population, still control many of the sugar plantations, although many emigrated to South Africa and France following independence. English is the official language of the island, though you're bound to hear French, Cr©ole (or MC, a melange of French, English, Indian, Malagasy and Chinese words) and a smattering of Indian languages. The island's main contribution to the performing arts is the Cr©ole s©ga , a foot-shuffling, body-gyrating, downright erotic dance that's generally performed on the beach to the rhythm of Latin American, Caribbean and African pop. S©ga variations to Cr©ole music are popular in the island's discos and are certainly more entertaining than the well-choreographed 'cultural shows' you'll see in hotel lounges.

Mauritius is a multicultural country, but some have observed that it is not yet a nation where people look more in the direction of the land of their forebearers and fail to come to terms with the reality in which they face everyday life. And yet the country has, in essence, its own language (Mauritian or Mauritian Creole ) and a thriving literature in that language, its own music and dance (the sega), a special cuisine - it's the land where miscegenation is rich and vibrant but there is a view that the root searching ideology of those in power tries to shroud what is most progressive in the cultural landscape. Mauritian beer (especially Phoenix, since 1963), is a big part of Mauritian culture.
