New Mauritania government, engineer of normalization with Israel is foreign minister
Mauritania, Politics, 8/11/2005 One week after the military coupe in Mauritania it was disclosed on Wednesday the formation of the new government chaired by Seidi Muhammad Weld Bubaker. The government included 26 ministries including three women and most of them did not occupy ministerial posts before.
Among members of this government are two former ministers who served in earlier governments for the toppled President Mu'aweya Weld Seidi Ahmad al-Taye. They are the minister for foreign affairs Ahmad Weld Seidi Ahmad who was described as the engineer of Mauritania's relations with Israel and Abdullah Weld Suleiman the former minister for economic affairs and development.
It seemed that the appointment of Weld Seidi Ahmad in the post of the foreign ministry was a sort of attempt from the military council to please the USA which strongly supported relations between Nouakchott and Tel Aviv. Relations inaugurated in the agreement which was signed by Ahmad Youssef in Washington with the Israeli side in 1999.
The list does not include the ministry of defense which is most likely kept for Col. Ala Weld Muhammad Faal the chairman of the military council. This government continued during the interim phase which was specified in two years according to commitment made by the ruling military group. Mahfouz Weld Betah, former bar association chief was appointed as a minister of justice.

Mauritania government deplores media coverage on torture in jails
Mauritania, Politics, 11/3/2004 The Mauritanian opposition parties deplored summoning three of its leaders to be brought before the judge of interrogation in charge of the file of the coupe attempt.
The opposition accused the authorities of resorting to this measure in order to cover what it called the scandal of torturing civilian and military detainees in Wadi al-Naqa prison to the east of Nouakchott, disclosed by Mauritania Monitor For Human Rights.
In a statement under the title "the Mauritania jail of Abu Ghreib," it said that secret pictures were depicted for tortured detainees in Mauritania taken during their stay in the Mauritanian jails, noting that the detainees whose photos were taken were detained under the charge of collaborating with the organization of the "Knights of Change" which was led by lt. Saleh Weld Hanana, who was arrested several weeks near the borders with Senegal.
Despite the fact that the Monitor collected the testimonies of lawyers who visited the detainees and stated that traces of brutal torture "were obvious on them," the Mauritanian minister of communications denied the existence of cases of torture among the detainees and accused human rights organizations of falsifying pictures which were shown on the Internet as examples for the cases of torture.

Back to Mauritania Government Mauritania, outlined on globe in front of Ministry of Defense Prior to independence, Mauritania served as a bridge between the Maghrib (see Glossary) and West Africa, with strong cultural links to the former and equally strong economic and administrative ties to the latter. Like Sudan and Chad, which also link Arab North Africa with black Africa, Mauritania suffered internal social and political problems as cultures collided. The potential for conflict was strengthened by the proliferation of particularist-regional political parties before independence. These parties, composed exclusively of either ArabBerbers (Maures) or one of several black ethnic groups and advocating union with Arab Morocco or with black Mali, tended to aggravate existing cleavages. To overcome the structural problems intrinsic to the Mauritanian polity, its first president, Moktar Ould Daddah, resorted to one-party rule with a strong executive branch. Although the Constitution of 1961 called for some power-sharing between the president and the legislature, the National Assembly, in practice, routinely supported presidential initiatives, and government remained highly centralized. Daddah's ill-fated participation in the
