Mauritania's hour postponed
Mauritanian President Mouawiya Ould Taya's sweeping victory at the polls this week might set the country on an irrevocable course of authoritarianism and racial discrimination, argues Gamal Nkrumah
Click to view caption Supporters of Mauritanian President Mouawiya Ould Taya ululate and jubilate in the streets of the Mauritanian capital Nouakchott Mauritanian society is strictly divided into a rigid caste system that flies in the face of the country's supposed march towards democratisation and political liberalisation. The lighter-skinned Arabic-speaking Moors, after whom the country's name is derived, and who have in the pre-colonial, colonial and post- independence eras monopolised power in Mauritania, are not prepared or willing to relinquish power. If Mauritania's traditional ruling elite retain power indefinitely as now seems likely with the sweeping victory of President Mouawiya Ould Taya at the presidential polls last Friday then democratisation is nothing but a sham in Mauritania. Black Mauritanians, women and the underprivileged and politically marginalised must be given the right to have a say in the decision-making process.

The Passport to Paradise gallery highlights the bold, visual images found all over Dakar by focusing upon the urban visual culture of the Mourides, a Senegalese Sufi movement centered upon the life and teachings of a local saint named Sheikh Amadou Bamba. Read our recently published guides to best practices in digitizing text and multimedia resources. Download them today from our "Best Practices" site. Fuuta Tooro Oral History Project The Fulbe people have played a prominent role in West African history, and a complete background on the Fuuta Tooro Oral History Project is available as part of this gallery. As cattle pastoralists, the Fulbe people spread across 2,000 miles of savanna land, from Senegambia in the west to Cameroun in the east, over the last one thousand years. As Muslim revolutionaries some of them established Islamic regimes over the last three centuries in four widely separated zones of the savanna. It was in these areas that they adapted the Arabic script to the writing of their language, Fulfulde, and developed other institutions for the dissemination of Islam in West Africa. More than any other single people, the Fulbe have led in the process whereby Islam has become the majority faith of the savanna region. The interviews below are representative samples from the collection still being digitized for this project.

Mauritania is beyond doubt the most dramatic country in North Africa, and one of the few remaining areas of the world which offers a feeling of medieval lifestyles. Infrastructure of Mauritania is badly developed, except for air services.

I am honored, on behalf of the United States, to host Israeli Foreign Minister Levy and Mauritanian Foreign Minister Sid'Ahmed as they announce the decision of their countries to establish full diplomatic relations. That dry diplomatic phrase can mean a great deal in the daily life of two nations. It opens the door to commerce and cultural exchange and, just as important, to contact and understanding. It doesn't mean that two nations have settled all their differences. It does not mean that they see eye to eye on all questions. But it does mean that they have chosen to explore the possibilities of cooperation, and of finding ways to identify and advance mutual interests.

MAURITANIA, AFRICA It's not Timbuktu, but in some respects Mauritania is even more remote, and Annika Dubrall (2003, English/Political Science), Luke Filose (1999, Political Science) and Adriana Publico (2002, PEIS/French) were surprised to meet, each working for the Peace Corps, the United States' more than 40-year-old international volunteer program. "But I discovered that Annika and I share common friends, and Adriana and I were born in the same hospital in Los Angeles."

    Water and Culture
by Kerry Zahn , Paris, Mauritania Mauritania forms the barrier between the Sahara and the rest of Africa and is a dry, arid country with a precarious relationship with water. Because water is so precious it serves as an important part in the welcoming of a guest into one's home. Although most Mauritanians are not well off they will always go out of their way to make you feel welcome. This welcoming ceremony includes offering you a bath, making you tea (in three rounds with each round sweeter and weaker then the round before) and many times giving you "zrig," a drink made from soured milk and water and sweetened with sugar. Water is also used in many religious ceremonies. Mauritanians may go to the "marabout," or holy man, to consult him about an illness, who many times will write some Koranic verses on a wooden board. The marabout will use water to erase the words and that water will be considered holy. When people drink this special water they believe they will be cured of whatever is ailing them. My host sister, Maydala, has been suffering for many years from an ailment and three times a day she will drink water that the marabout has made especially for her. by Heather Cameron , Rosso, Mauritania Mauritanians are avid tea drinkers as are many North and West African peoples. They all share the same ceremonial customgreen tea with mint that has become a common part of every day life. In fact, this delicious tea is made in rounds of three glasses and drunk several times a day, including during the blazing afternoon heat. Water is used to meticulously clean the small glasses after each round, as well as to make the tea.
