Mauritania Plants and Animal Back to Top Millet and sorghum were Mauritania's principal crops, followed by rice and corn. Before the 1980s, millet and sorghum accounted for 70 to 80 % or more of total grain production. Rice production in the 1970s averaged 5 to 10 %, and corn made up 10 to 25 %. In the 1980s, rice production grew in importance, as national planning emphasized irrigated agriculture and a change in dietary habits. In the 1980s, the government put increased emphasis on developing the rural sector. Government planning strategy under the 1985-88 Economic Recovery Program placed the highest priority on rural development. Particular attention was to be paid to upgrading existing land and developing new irrigated farming and flood recession agriculture. There were also plans involving Mauritania, Mali, and Senegal to integrate rural development and water and flood control through the Senegal River Development Office as the massive Diama and Manantali dams became fully operational. Mauritania Culture A combination of Islamic, French and traditional African influences, Mauritanian culture underpins society, but rarely raises its head in ostentatious ways. There is virtually no literature or theatre in Mauritania, so those looking for overt displays of 'Africanness' often leave disappointed. Traditional music, on the other hand, is unmissable and never fails to leave an impression. Characterised by a tidnit (a four-stringed lute), sometimes an ardin (harp) and usually a wailing vocalist, it can be nerve-shattering to the unaccustomed ear. The Moors' social activities often revolve around the traditional glass of Arab tea with mint. Customarily three glasses of tea will be served over about an hour. Sweet and strong, the tea has a punch to rival a strong coffee. With 99% of the population Sunni Muslim, religion provides a superficial unity between Moors and Black Africans. Race riots occurred in 1989, showing this unity to be, at best, extremely fragile. And as the brutal 1993 attack on two Catholic priests shows, there is a small but increasingly militant band of Islamic fundamentalists operating. On the whole, however, the brand of Islam is open and liberal.

Sources : World Development Report 1983, Africa South of the Sahara 1983/4, US. Dept of State Briefings 1979 (culture, infant mortality) Mauritania is a country of deep-rooted tradition. Until as recently as ten years ago, two-thirds of the population were nomadic herders. But the fierce drought of the 1970s and the drain on the economy caused by the war in the North (which only ended in 1979) have combined to accelerate rural-urban migration and joblessness. Undeterred, many Mauritanians still aspire to be nomadic traders. If in the past the trade was across the Sahara in slaves, gold, salt and dates, today it is by air to Las Palmas in the Canary Islands to bring back watches, radios and cassette recorders. In its unique crossroads position for Arab-subsaharan contact, Mauritania has a rich history. Moorish culture extended into Southern Spain in the eleventh century and the earliest known West African Kingdom, Ghana, is said to have had its capital in the south.

A rich culture developed through Mauritania’s long history now sits alongside a modern and exciting vision of the country’s future in the global economy Mauritania’s cultural heritage supports a stable society built around principles of peace and tolerance P Mauritania gained independence from France in 1960. With this came the declaration of an Islamic republic, the establishment of a new capital and an industrialization boost. In 1984, Maaouiya Ould Sidi Ahmed Taya came to power in a bloodless coup. A new constitution permitting multiple parties was established in 1992 and Colonel Ould Taya was re-elected, making Mauritania the first member of the Arab League to have elected a head of state by direct universal suffrage. President Taya was re-elected in 1997 and in 2003 when he received 66.7% of the vote. Mauritania is the only country in West Africa ruled by people with a nomadic heritage.                                                                                                Last updated September 2005 Mauritania is a sparsely populated country at the western extremity of the Saharan desert. Only the southern extremity supports rain-fed vegetation (more than 90 percent of the land surface is desert, with less than 200 mm rainfall per year). The population was estimated at 2.7 million in 2004, with a growth rate of 2.4 percent per year and a per capita gross national income in 2004 of $420. Mauritania has an intricate dual culture, having traditional ties with the Maghreb countries to the North and with Senegal and Mali in the South and East. The socio-cultural landscape has recently undergone a rapid transformation. From a traditionally nomadic society at independence (1960) with only 5 percent of the population in urban centers, the country is now urban-dominated, with over half the population (1.6 million) living in urban centers (1998 figures). This urbanization was caused by rapid population sedentarization and migration from rural areas, particularly since the mid-1980s. Nouakchott, the capital city, contains one-third of the total population.
