New imaging technique gives first-ever look at water "crystals"
By Jeffery Kahn, JBKahn@lbl.gov At certain humidities, water condenses by first forming a one-atom-thick layer of room-temperature ice. That's just one of the remarkable new findings from researchers in the Materials Sciences Division (MSD) who have produced the first high-resolution microscopic images of water condensing and evaporating. Conventional scientific wisdom has long held that high-resolution images of liquid surfaces cannot be created. In defiance of this wisdom, however, an MSD team of Miquel Salmeron, Frank Ogletree, X.D. Xiao, and graduate student Jun Hu report have been able to create maps of liquid surfaces showing features as small as 200 angstroms, or two-hundred millionths of a meter. The key is a novel approach to the use of an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM). The researchers describe their technique, which they call polarization force microscopy, in a paper published in the journal

AMERICA IS CURRENTLY IN THE MIDST of state-by-state political activism and judicial appeals to prevent the legalization of same-sex marriage. In 1996 the U.S. Supreme Court invalidated one example of the related effort to roll back laws protecting homosexuals from civil discrimination, but this campaign moves forward on various fronts in every state of the Union. Its organizers will certainly extend this political activism into all states currently lacking a "Defense of Marriage Act" (DOMA) which both prohibits same-sex marriage and refuses to recognize such unions legally performed in other states or countries. In view of the pace for this state-by-state political activism during the 1990s, the Defense of Marriage campaign will probably continue throughout the United States for at least another decade.

Hanson She captured the attention of the Canadians, as she performed the persona of Margarite last July at the Kootenay Storytelling Festival in Nelson, BC. Margarite was a female Matis (pronounced: Mâ tee), a half French, half native, fur trapper who dressed and acted like a man to protect herself in the wild and untamed wilderness in which she traveled. According to some historical records, she even married another woman. Margarite joined David Thompson’s party as a guide, interpreter and trapper who explored the northwest for 24 years and 50,000 miles of adventure with the famous map maker.

Online Petition to Save The Miami Circle Intact
Miami Circle is dedicated to saving the sacred Miami Circle of the Tequesta Native Americans in Miami, Florida.
This is the Miami Circle's online PEOPLE'S Petition to create a Heritage Park on the site of the Miami River Circle.
We the undersigned believe that the preservation of historical treasures and archaeological sites is critical to our community's sense of place and identity and should be preserved for posterity to serve as an important educational and cultural resource to the world. We hereby petition the Govenor of the State of Florida and the members of the State Legislature to allocate the necessary funds to create a Heritage Park on the site where archaeologists have uncovered the Miami River Circle, a prehistoric stone circle carved into the bedrock limestone on the site of an ancient Tequesta Indian Village.
Please forgive anyone who posts what they think are humorous remarks. I will try to clear them as soon as possible, however, I am trying to work to save the circle and may not be able to clear them right away. Your Name:

There has been little research in Britain regarding Lesbians and even less concerning Black and Minority Ethnic Lesbians. We have put together this Resource List to make research conducted elsewhere accessible in Britain. All of the academic papers are obtainable by completing a request form (this should cost about .50p) at your local library who will send for a photocopy from the British Library. Similarly, many of the books should also be obtainable through your local library. Our thanks to Evelyn and Dorothea for their comments and suggestions.

Following some historical and literary background regarding lesbianism in China, demographic data, family background, and behavioral characteristics of 15 lesbians in Hong Kong are described and compared with like data for a matched group of married women. Questionnaire and interview responses reveal that more of the lesbians were adopted, experienced an unhappy childhood and hostile family atmosphere, had parents who would have preferred them to be boys and attended sexually segregated schools. Subjects differed from their Western counterparts in having a closer relationship with their mothers, and in the absence of oral sexual practice.

    Essay: equal opportunities
The problem of equal opportunities, which is closely related to social justice, has never been solved so far. Although democratic systems have spread across new countries, the only occasion for public debate about the matter is when people go to polls. Politicians seem to forget about their electorate after seizing power. There is a lot of ...
