September 2000 ISBN 1 900621 49 5 Launched by the President of the Royal Irish Academy in Academy House on 3rd October 2000 Front cover Blurb Foreword by Professor David Spearman, President of the Royal Irish Academy Introduction Contents Reviews Front cover Blurb Most people who have included science in their secondary education will have come across the name of Kelvin. Lord Kelvin of Largs, otherwise know as William Thomson, was born in Belfast in 1824. He is arguably the best known Irish mathematician/physicist , famous for his work in thermodynamics, which led to the absolute scale of temperature being named after him, and for the part he played in getting the first Trans-Atlantic telephone cable from Ireland to America to work. Some people may have heard also of William Rowan Hamilton, the inventor of quaternions, a form of algebra, and may know that he carved the basic formulae into the stone of Brougham Bridge in Dublin. George Boole is another Irish mathematician who may be known to many. His Boolean algebra is the basis of the mathematics of computers. These three lived all or most of their lives in the 19th Century, but their influence on the world scene is still being felt. So too is the work of many more mathematicians with Irish connections and this book tells the stories of eighteen of them who lived and worked and died sometime between 1560 and 1992. These biographies are intended to give the enquiring lay person some insights into each person's work and each person's private life. The reader does not need specialist mathematical knowledge to follow them. Together they present a picture of Irish success in the international worlds of mathematics, statistics and physics.

Berwald
Ludwig Berwald (1883-1942). Born in Prague. Studied mathematics in Munich and became a full professor at the German Charles University in Prague. His scientific work is mainly in differential geometry, notably on Finsler geometry and on spray geometry, i.e. , path spaces. He died in Poland after having been deported by the German authorities just because he was Jewish.
Bortolotti
Enea Bortolotti (1896-1934). Born in Rome. After a break during the First World War, he received his Ph.D. in 1920 at Pisa; he was particularly influenced by L. Bianchi. After teaching at the medical school, he became professor of geometry at the Univerity of Cagliari in 1928. From there he moved on to the same position at the University of Florence in 1934. Despite his premature death, Bortolotti published about a hundred papers, notably in differential geometry.
Cartan van Dantzig
David van Dantzig (1900-1959). Born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Studied mathematics at the University of Amsterdam. Worked first on differential geometry, electrodynamics and unified field theory. Known as co-founder, in 1946, of the Mathematical Centre in Amsterdam and by his role in establishing mathematical statistics as a subdiscipline in the Netherlands.
Dienes
Paul Dienes (1982-1952). Born in Tokaj, Hungary. Studied mathematics. From 1929-1945 Reader, and from 1945-48 Professor at Birkbeck College, University of London.

http://www.hypatiamaze.org/emmy_noether.html
Although there are over a hundred biographies of Albert Einstein, only one biography of Mathematician Emmy Noether exists and it was written by a high school math teacher! This lack of interest by professional science historians in a mathematician of her rank is scandalous.
Are the historians not aware that Emmy Noether worked on the general theory of relativity during the years 1915 to 1920? She published a paper which many consider the cornerstone of General Relativity.
Although she was not on the faculty officially, she was working with David Hilbert at the University of Gottingen in Germany. She was invited to join his team of mathematicians who were working on Hilbert's foray into mathematical physics. In fact, many historians today give credit to Hilbert for the "final form" of the equations describing general relativity theory. Apparently, both he and Einstein produced the same equations at about the same time: fall of 1915!
Emmy Noether was there, and this was only the beginning of her illustrious career. . . A "new woman" with a new math for modern physics.

Emilie du Chatelet
December 17, 1706 - September 10, 1749
Written by Sasha Mandic, Class of 1997 (Agnes Scott College)
In a society where nobility disliked the notion of education for their daughters arose one of the great mathematicians of the eighteenth century, Frenchwoman, Emilie du Chatelet. Born in Paris on December 17, 1706, she grew up in a household where the art of courting was the only way one could mold a place in society. During her early childhood, Emilie began to show such promise in the area of academics that soon she was able to convince her father that she needed attention. Provided with a relatively good education for the time, she studied and soon mastered Latin, Italian and English. She also studied Tasso, Virgil, Milton and other great scholars of the time. In spite of her talents in the area of languages, her true love was mathematics. Her study in this area was encouraged by a family friend, M. de Mezieres, who recognized the young lady's talent. Emilie's work in mathematics was rarely original or as captivating as that of other female mathematicians but it was substantive. The fact that it was accomplished in the first place is in itself remarkable. Emilie's astuteness was prominent in other areas as well. She was described as being somewhat of a "passionate nature", never lacking for romantic attachments either before or after her marriage. At the age of nineteen she married the thirty-four-year-old Marquis du Chatelet. During the first two years of their marriage, Emilie gave birth to a boy and a girl, and later the birth of another son followed when she was twenty-seven. Neither children nor her husband deterred her from fully indulging in the social life of the court.
