Problem Solving
Solving arithmetic problems can be difficult because the wording of the questions is frequently confusing. Don't despair!! Use your experiences in Real Life to help you make sense of the nonsense!! Try these questions. If you get stuck, click on HINT to get a suggestion. Check your answer when you are finished with each. If you arrived at a different answer, see if you can figure out what happened... Good Luck!!
Problem 1
Pat worked 5 hours and was paid $30. How much is this an hour? Get a hint... Divide the total ($30) into (5) equal parts. Check your answer 30 dollars 5 hours = $6.00 per hour
Problem 2
Tonya bought 2 skirts that cost $10 each and 3 tops that cost $5 each. What was the total cost? Get a hint... Find the separate totals (multiply quantity times price) then add to combine. Check your answer 2 skirts $10 each plus 3 tops $5 each = $35.00 total
Problem 3
John works 30 hours a week and is paid $195.45. How much does he earn per hour? A) Less than $5
B) $5 - $6
C) $6 - $7

    Variables
A variable is a symbol that represents a number. Usually we use letters such as n t , or x for variables. For example, we might say that s stands for the side-length of a square. We now treat s s . The area of the square is given by s s . When working with variables, it can be helpful to use a letter that will remind you of what the variable stands for: let n be the n umber of people in a movie theater; let t be the t ime it takes to travel somewhere; let d be the d istance from my house to the park.
    Expressions
An expression is a mathematical statement that may use numbers, variables, or both. Example: The following are examples of expressions: x y z z Example: Roland weighs 70 kilograms, and Mark weighs k kilograms. Write an expression for their combined weight. The combined weight in kilograms of these two people is the sum of their weights, which is 70 + k Example: A car travels down the freeway at 55 kilometers per hour. Write an expression for the distance the car will have traveled after

    A Math/Physics Word Problem
by steven 8:15 PM October 3, 2004 118 replies If you are walking from point A to point B in the rain, do you get more or less wet depending on how fast you walk?
    • forget about dripping rain - any drop that hits you counts as one drop the rain is evenly distributed and falls at a constant and consistent speed
The qestion is, over a given distance, does the rate at which you move (in a straight line, you can assume) affect how many drops of rain you come in contact with? It might help to think through the problem in two dimensions. But, I'm not sure about the running thing. I would think that the faster you go, the more you will hit though. Zach Hale 9:35 PM October 3, 2004
