Sudoku Variations
The Magic Sudoku puzzle by Alexandre Owen Muniz a few weeks back was very popular . I followed it up with a Math Games column about Sudoku Variations . An unsung hero in this is Wei-Hwa Huang, who sent me an enormously helpful list of Sudoku types . Alan O'Donnell sent solutions (and corrections) for every puzzle in the column "I think I can say I've truly conquered this genre of puzzle now." Bob Harris mentioned that the Geometric Sudoku are also known as Latin Squares , with only one given per region. Bob Harris: It's amazing to me how much more difficult generating an 8x8 puzzle seems to be than a . Here's an 8x8 (below). Probably pretty hard, but at least 3 cells can be labeled quickly and a couple other matches (this cell is the same as this other cell) can also be identified.

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) A publicity-shy Russian researcher who labors in near-seclusion may have solved one of mathematics' oldest and most abstruse problems, the Poincare Conjecture. Evidence has been mounting since November 2002 that Grigori "Grisha" Perelman has cracked the 100-year-old problem, which seeks to explain the geometry of three-dimensional space. If Perelman succeeded, he could be eligible for a $1 million prize offered by the Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Clay Mathematics Institute, formed to identify the world's seven toughest math problems. Mathematicians around the world have been checking Perelman's work in search of the kind of flaws that have sunk the many other supposed solutions to a problem first presented by the French mathematician Henri Poincare in 1904. "This is arguably the most famous unsolved problem in math and has been for some time," said Bruce Kleiner, a University of Michigan math professor reviewing Perelman's work.

    "Prime Time for the Riemann Hypothesis": Review of Prime Obsession: Bernhard Riemann and the Greatest Unsolved Problem in Mathematics by John Derbyshire. Reviewed by Brian Conrey. Science , 3 October 2003, pages 60-61. In addition to providing a positive review of the book, Conrey also gives a nice description of the problem and of progress toward its solution. He writes, "In Prime Obsession , John Derbyshire has produced a remarkably accessible and deeply researched description of this fascinating problem." Two other books about the Riemann hypothesis The Riemann Hypothesis (which in the United Kingdom is titled Dr. Riemann's Zeros ) by Karl Sabbagh, and The Music of the Primes by Marcus du Sautoyhave also recently been published.     The Riemann hypothesis is based around prime numbers A new book attempts to explain to the non-specialist the seven most important unsolved problems in mathematics.
    A million dollar prize - put forward by a US organisation - awaits the individual who can solve any of the so-called Millennium Problems. The updated paperback - also called The Millennium Problems - is written by Keith Devlin, executive director of the Centre for the Study of Language and Information at Stanford University. "It was an enormous challenge for me in writing the book," Dr Devlin told BBC World Service's Outlook programme. "I had to write a book that could tell you what the problems were - go around the problems without getting into them. "I describe those seven problems as the Mount Everest of mathematics. "There are several books that you can buy about mountain climbing that are great spectator books, that give you a sense of what it's like to climb Mount Everest without getting people right down in the dirty details of how you do it." Long-standing challenge An original set of 23 mathematical problems was outlined by Prussian mathematician David Hilbert in 1900.

    Millennium Problems
    In order to celebrate mathematics in the new millennium, The Clay Mathematics Institute of Cambridge, Massachusetts (CMI) has named seven Prize Problems . The Scientific Advisory Board of CMI selected these problems, focusing on important classic questions that have resisted solution over the years. The Board of Directors of CMI designated a $7 million prize fund for the solution to these problems, with $1 million allocated to each. During the Millennium Meeting The Importance of Mathematics , aimed for the general public, while John Tate and Michael Atiyah spoke on the problems. The CMI invited specialists to formulate each problem. One hundred years earlier, on August 8, 1900, David Hilbert delivered his famous lecture about open mathematical problems at the second International Congress of Mathematicians in Paris. This influenced our decision to announce the millennium problems as the central theme of a Paris meeting. The rules for the award of the prize have the endorsement of the CMI Scientific Advisory Board and the approval of the Directors. The members of these boards have the responsibility to preserve the nature, the integrity, and the spirit of this prize.
