Undergraduate Graduate Distance Education General Info ... Search Studying Mathematics By Samuel B. Thompson (Revised by Chris Payne, November 2004) M athematics is increasingly important in modern society  not only in science and engineering, but throughout the business world and in the expanding field of computer science. Beyond utility in the modern world, the study of mathematics cultivates the ability to think analytically, read carefully, and speak and write concisely. All UMUC associate and baccalaureate degrees have a basic math requirement. The key to successful study of mathematics is starting with the right course. Before enrolling in a math course, you should take UMUC-Europe's math placement test at the local education center. If the education center has a computer lab, you can take the online Accuplacer placement test, which takes less than an hour to complete. It indicates whether the best course for you to take is MATH 001 Pre-algebra, MATH 009 Introductory Algebra, MATH 012 Intermediate Algebra, or MATH 107 College Algebra. Accuplacer gives a very accurate snapshot of your level of mathematical skill, and is used by thousands of colleges and universities across the United States as a definitive placement tool. If your education center does not have a computer lab, the field representative will administer a simple pen and paper placement test. | |
