Some Tips for Successful Math Study
There is nothing about math that makes learning it different and more difficult than learning other subjects. Still, most students enter math classes with attitudes and expectations that make success difficult. Here are some strategies that will help you be successful in the math courses that you are studying.
1. Reading Math Textbooks Effectively
  • Read the assigned sections before class so that you will have some idea of what the instructor is teaching.
  • Work through the examples in the sections covered in class.
  • Develop your own note taking strategy. For example:
  • On 5 x 8 cards write strategies for solving problems. Some textbook authors provide such strategies that can be copied exactly.
  • You will also find it useful to write math rules, laws, or theorems on fact cards. These facts must be learned word for word.
  • The third type of information you should extract and write out as you read your math texts is specialized vocabulary and symbols along with their definitions. Like the theorems, these definitions must be learned exactly word for word.
  • Do not look at the different sections of a chapter separately. In most cases, the sections in a chapter are inter-related and knowledge of the material in the previous section may be required to understand the next section.

Success Guide
College 101 Taking notes and studying for tests is a big part of college life. Use the following tips to learn about different study techniques so that you can retain more information and ace every exam. Read Assignments Before Going to Class Reading assignments before class builds your background for the information that will be presented in class. It helps you be familiar with the vocabulary and the concepts that will be discussed. This is particularly important if you have little or no prior experience with the subject being studied. As you read, look for important points and use a pen to underline them. This helps you be an active reader. If you don't have time to read the whole assignment, then at least try to read the introductory paragraph, the first sentence of each paragraph, and the closing paragraph. This will give you a good overview of the chapter. Go to Class and Take Notes Most professors lecture during class periods, emphasizing the points they want you to remember from your reading. When you enter class, get out your notebook, date the page, and prepare to write. Don't stop taking notes until the person quits talking. Pay particular attention to the end of the lecture, as often, the lecturer will cram quite a bit into this part in order to finish up for the day. Remember to use abbreviations, get the details and main ideas, and make those main ideas stand out in some way. Review Your Notes as Soon as Possible After Class While the notes are still "fresh" and you are able to decipher them, look over them and make any additions or corrections before the next class. Be sure to make note of any parts you didn't understand or that you didn't get. Then either ask the professor at the beginning of the next class period or get the missing information from a friend in the class.

Note Taking The key point of note taking is that you should always be thinking about what you write. The final goal is to learn. So it is a good idea to work learning into your daily schedule. Taking notes is a ritual for thinking. It underscores the moment, it repeats the thought. Writing is one of the best support systems for learning. [Emphasis added]. Helpful Tips for Succeeding in Mathematics 1. Use good listening skills while in class. Evaluate what you hear and try to focus on what the instructor is talking about. 2. Take thorough notes while in class and while reading your textbook. Review your notes as soon as possible and rewrite them if time permits. 3. Be active in class. Participation will help you to grasp the topics better. 4. Be prepared for class. Don't just do the homework. Read ahead in your text and review notes from the previous class as well. Remember, doing homework does not equal studying. 5. Learn to manage your time. Make "to do" lists, use a planner, and prioritize. 6. Avoid high levels of stress when possible. A little stress may help you perform better, but too much can cause "shutdown." 7. Maintain a balanced life. Don't let classes become your life. Stay healthy by eating right and getting exercise. 8. Be self-aware. Know what is going on inside you.

Introduction First Things Planning Study Skills
    Introduction back to top
As a department chair from 1990-1997, I counselled most of the students to do not succeed in our department's engineering majors. Most students who fail academically, do so because of a few critical errors in judgement and in how they approach their studies. As a student (again) myself from 1984-1988, I became an avid student of "how to study" mathematically based subjects. I had the good fortune to learn some of the secrets of studying mathematically based subjects (such as statistics and engineering) and developed a few new techniques of my own. I have shared these methods with students on an individual basis and in numerous workshops and presentations. Students who have used these techniques report excellent results.
    • The most effective way of communicating these techiques is in a workshop format. Unfortunately just reading this document leaves too much to the imagination.

Topic: Remembering After reading "Remembering" from the University of Victoria, "Ten Principles of Memory" from Dartmouth, and "Using Memory Effectively" from the University of St, Thomas, I realized just how vital a good and selective memory is to success in everything. All three sites have great ideas about the subject that are helpful in improving memory. The first article tells that remembering is in two broad types- recognizing and recalling. It also states that in order to memorize information, you must learn it and understand it first so it makes sense to you once you have it memorized. Practice remembering things is necessary to acquire endurance, retention, and confidence in this area. All of these aspects are vital for you to be able to memorize anything. The second article has many of the same ideas, but elaborates on them and adds many more. It also emphasizes the importance of understanding the information and the need for practice and repetition of memorization. Some new ideas are to be sure to get the information right the first time and try to relate it to something you already know and understand. It is also helpful to break the information into smaller groups that are easily memorized at different times in different parts of the brain.
