Reading Different Kinds of Textbooks
Chapter Seven
Read the following information to learn additional tips for reading and learning from different kinds of textbooks. Composition Textbooks Textbooks designed to teach you writing and organizational skills contain declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge . They also include many examples demonstrating the skills presented in the chapters.  Use the following tips to read and study from composition textbooks:
  • Study the examples carefully; explain to yourself the different parts shown in the examples. Learn the terminology.  As you study terminology, include examples. Learn the writing steps presented by the author and explained through examples Plan to revise drafts several times before completing the final product. Learn to analyze your work, sentence by sentence and paragraph by paragraph. This requires careful proofreading and application of writing elements or structures presented in the course.
Literature Textbooks Literature, which includes short stories, essays, plays, poetry, and novels, involves imaginative, figurative language used to communicate and share an emotional experience. For the full emotional impact of the writing, begin by reading through the complete selection to get an overview; do not stop to analyze or take notes.  Let yourself get immersed in the content and the flow of the action.  For novels, your overview reading could involve reading one chapter at a time. After your first uninterrupted reading, read the material a second time.

Keep Up Mathematics is different from other disciplines. You need to know yesterday's material to understand today's.
Quality Time This is about 2 hours at home for every hour in class. Time thinking counts. Time staring at the wall doesn’t: get help! Your math sessions should be short and frequent. Don’t save it all for one long night of cramming.
Cooperate Ask questions of your classmates, listen and respond to theirs. Form a study group. The more ways you look at something, the clearer it will become.
Get Interested For some folks this may sound hard. But an ounce of understanding is worth a pound of formulas. You only learn what you really want to learn.
Get Feedback Talk to me! In class and during office hours. Ask questions, answer questions, don’t be afraid to guess. Correct quiz and test mistakes right away. Check homework answers after each session. Join a study group. Go to the Math Clinic.
Practice There are two very different skills involved:
1) Practice each technique we learn on homework problems.

What type of learner are you?
This is one of the most important questions you can ask yourself. Knowing the answer will help you study more effectively and efficiently. To find out more, check out one of the links below, or complete an online version of the Learning Styles Inventory How do you organize your time?
Time Management is an essential skill required for success in college and the professional world. At the beginning of every semester, you should carefully review each syllabus to get a sense of what is expected of you and how much time you need to devote the class as a whole and its assignments. The following sheets can assist you in doing so.

Translate problems into English
Putting problems into words aids your understanding. When you study equations and formulae, put those into words as well. The words help you see a variety of applications for each formula. For example, the Pythagorean Theorem, C = A + B can be translated as "The square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides." Perform opposite operations If a problem involves multiplication, check your work by dividing; if addition then subtract and check your work, if divide then check with multiply; if square root then check with square; if differentiate then integrate. Use time drills Practice working problems fast. Time yourself. Exchange problems with a friend and time each other. Do this in the Study Group. Analyze before you compute Set up the problem before you begin to solve it. When a problem is worth a lot of points, read it twice, slowly. Analyze it carefully. When you take time to analyze a problem you can often see ways to take computational short-cuts.

Review previous sections a little each day. Try making an index card file of rules, procedures, formulas, strategies, steps, etc. Make reviewing fun by "shuffling the deck" of index cards and "dealing them out" to see whether or not you can recall the information. 3. Neatly write out every step of the problem. If our work is a mess, so is the visual input that is provided to the brain. 4. After practicing a problem, have someone check the process. If your process is wrong, the more you practice the incorrect steps the harder it will be learn the correct method. 5. Practice as much as possible. Just watching the teacher do the problem, does not develop your ability to do the process. Learning cannot be thought of as a "spectator sport".
