    Read intelligently
    ...
    Subject-specific advice
Read intelligently In general, you'll find that textbooks are designed to emphasize the points you'll need to know - oftentimes there's a summary, recap, or question section at the end of each chapter. Knowing this area well will be far more useful than trying to memorize every word. Also, focus on whatever's said about that chapter in the table of contents: this will reflect the chapter's main function and highlight its important concepts. When reading an assignment, first skim the chapter, keeping your eyes peeled for the subheadings and terms in bold type. Then reread the entire chapter, taking notes as you go. Check back to your class notes to see what areas your instructor emphasized, and any sections he or she may have told you to read extra carefully. You might even want to write a short summary of each chapter when you finish, to see how well you understand (and can explain) the material. Then go back and quiz yourself on all the terms in bold. And what about the ever-popular highlighter? Feel free to highlight liberally, but don't turn the whole book yellow. Also, highlighting is only useful if you go back and read what you highlighted. Reading over your highlighted sentences is a breezy way to study during lunch without getting your notes all greasy.

Active Study vs. Passive Study Be actively involved in managing the learning process, the mathematics and your study time:
    • Take responsibility for studying, recognizing what you do and don't know, and knowing how to get your Instructor to help you with what you don't know.
    • Attend class every day and take complete notes. Instructors formulate test questions based on material and examples covered in class as well as on those in the text.
    • Be an active participant in the classroom. Get ahead in the book; try to work some of the problems before they are covered in class. Anticipate what the Instructor's next step will be.
    • Ask questions in class! There are usually other students wanting to know the answers to the same questions you have.
    • Go to office hours and ask questions. The Instructor will be pleased to see that you are interested, and you will be actively helping yourself.

    Study Skills
Follow these simple tips when using your MathTV.com CD or subscription to assist you with math homework assignments and test preparation. Work problems out of your textbook every day. Be in the habit of showing your work so that it looks like the work in your textbook, and like the work of your teacher. Before you do your homework, read the preceding section in your textbook. Use your MathTV.com CD or subscription to review material from the previous day. Ask your teacher good questions when you don't understand a concept or problem. Use your MathTV.com CD or subscription to preview new material before you attend class. Try to use the vocabulary in your textbook when you explain problems to a friend, or when you ask your teacher a question. Find a study partner; check homework regularly with that person. Use your quizzes to study for chapter tests. Make a list of problems you find difficult, or that you missed on a test, and work them regularly.

http://www.eop.mu.edu/study/ This was the best test taking skills site I found because it was also very thorough and specific. It had a pleasant general appearance, though it looks like it was designed by a student rather than a professor. www.howtostudy.com - A compilation of some of the best study information sites on the Internet. Preface
Many students consult me for advice on how to overcome specific difficulties with their studies. I expect there are many more who wish they had written materials to consult but do not know what to look for or where to find it. I wrote this annotated bibliography with those students’ needs in mind. The materials I have reviewed are available from the AU Library. Students can access the AU Library Catalogue online from the Learning Centres or on the World Wide Web. The materials are organized into five sections. "English Grammar" contains books focusing on language usage and spelling. "Exams and Exam Anxiety Reduction" discusses books about exam preparation, taking specific types of exams, and dealing with exam anxiety. "Math and Math Anxiety Reduction" has books that teach and refresh math skills or deal with exam anxiety; the Tobias book does both. "Study Skills" books cover a wide range of study skills and are often a good place for students to begin their reading. "Writing Essays, Research Papers and Reports" focuses on writing major documents.

    LEARNING ENHANCEMENT AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT
Study Skills development is a significant part of counsellors' work. Distance education students must budget their time, stay motivated, as well as complete their academic requirements. Counsellors can help students by recommending materials and providing individual assistance. Our annotated bibliography of selected study skills books is a good place to start. Study Smarter, not harder.....
Studying is learned and improves with practice. Many students already have good study skills that they haven't used in years. Others may never have learned how to study effectively. In either case, there is help available. Athabasca University provides print as well as electronic assistance. An agreement has been reached with the Athabasca University Student Union (AUSU) in which the University provide the resources and AUSU mails them out.
    • AUSU will mail to you materials to help your study skills:
