The Learning Context
During the early stages of learning math, an aspect of the early learning experience is memorizing a lot of detailed information (numbers and sequence, the "times" tables, etc.) As the child is undertaking this rote learning, he or she also starts to learn the basic principles of numeric relationships and math functions.
Developing basic competency in math relies in part upon the child’s ability to memorize and develop fast recall of information. As they develop their basic skills and understanding of the principles in math - the other part, they then engage in applying their knowledge to solving math based problems. In the classroom, this is often done through what are commonly called "word problems". ( "If John had three apples and…") The skills involved in solving "word problems" are being able to first identify what is the right mathematical approach required to answer the question, being able identify the right inputs or numbers to work with, and then being able to do the calculations correctly to produce an answer.
So what is involved in becoming good at math
1. Being able to remember and quickly recall lots of specific pieces of information.

11.1-smarter-math-software login Smarter Math Software SFU is part of a new Network of Centres of Excellence in Mathematics that funds projects in applied and theoretical math at SFU. What's preferable: 3.142857142857... or 22/7? To a mathematician's esthetic, 22/7 is the more elegant and informative way of writing the repeating decimal 3.142857142857... Any number can be represented in various ways. Mathematics professor Peter Borwein's Symbolic Analysis project examines this as one of four themes in computational analysis. He's getting computers to recognize when two very different expressions represent the same numerical object. The system automatically identifies simpler symbolic representations of numbers. "The idea is to add a sort of math spell-checker to analytical mathematics packages like Maple," says Borwein. Users would be alerted when a number or relationship they type has some simpler representation. One part of SFU's MITACS contribution is the visualization of subtle mathematical phenomena over the World Wide Web. An unexpected fractal pattern emerges in this representation of the coefficients of Cebychev polynomials. (See http://www.cecm.sfu.ca/~loki/Papers/Numbers/

Math software and parallel software tools support on Alliance platforms
The Persistent Infrastructure's (PI) Performance Engineering staff takes the lead in supporting software for NCSA's production systems, in the area of (parallel) math software, and productivity tools. This work involves identifying, evaluating, acquiring, installing, testing, and documenting the software. Support work involves interaction with the developers or vendors, and training/helping users with the software. The software comes from many different sources: NCSA partners, other academic or government lab research groups, the vendors, third party vendors. With NCSA's move to Linux clusters, open source software has been a growing emphasis in this work. The numerical, statistical, mathematical, and parallel tools software support is undertaken by the PECM group.

Dear Visitor, The Internet is certainly changing the way we shop. There are so many thousand products relating to math that I hesitate to make any recommendations. But there are a few products I've bought, which are worth knowing about. I've reviewed them down below, and have also listed sites where you will find free math products, and where you can read reviews of Children's software.
If you'd like to comment on anything you buy from this short list, or if you would like to suggest other products which particularly pleased you, I'd be delighted to hear from you.
Sincerely,
  • There are many Web sites that offer freeware (which costs nothing) and shareware (which you can try for free, and pay for if you like it). Here is a site you can visit to look over the offerings in mathematics. When you enter it, search for "Math" software.

The Early Republic The Early Republic The World Stage The Cold War The Information Age Resources Between 1800 and 1860, the number of Americans learning elementary mathematics multiplied as several states established public or common schools to provide basic education. Swiss educator Johann Pestalozzi argued that students would learn better if they associated ideas with objects and visual images. Many Americans adopted Pestalozzi’s ideas, supplementing rote learning of arithmetic with blackboard drawings, attractive charts, and lessons using objects. COVER OF RAY'S PRACTICAL ARITHMETIC
TOP OF PAGE
From colonial times, American children used slates to write down their work. Slates also were a convenient tool for surveyors and others who worked in the field away from pen and paper. In the 19th and 20th centuries, slates were sometimes sold with numeral frames. Mathematics teachers with ties to England and France introduced blackboards into the United States around 1800. By the 1840s, these erasable surfaces were used for teaching a wide range of subjects in elementary schools, colleges, and academies. The Massachusetts educator William A. Alcott visited over 20,000 schoolhouses. “A blackboard, in every school house,” he wrote, “is as indispensably necessary as a stove or fireplace.” Teachers used blackboards in lecturing, for setting problems, and for presenting student work. Early blackboards were wood, painted black. From the 1850s, several vendors sold specially formulated “liquid slating” to be used as paint.
