    OVERVIEW
This lesson includes an experiment for the science class and can be expanded through optional graphing activities to include math. The experiment uses an inclined plane and balls of various masses to determine the effect a large object has on a small object, as well as the effect of different velocities. This experiment can be done to illustrate momentum, kinetic energy, acceleration due to gravity and forces. SUGGESTED TIME ALLOWANCE
One or two 40-50 minute class periods (Data collected, graphs made, questions answered on day one; results discussed and optional video viewed on day two.)
    OBJECTIVES
    Students will be able to:
    • Analyze the effect of mass of an object on the distance it travels.
    • Analyze the effect of the height of the plane (velocity) on the distance it travels.
    • Describe how mass and velocity are interrelated.

Schools spend more on energy than on computers and textbooks combined. Reducing energy use is an effective way to help cash-strapped schools funnel more money into the classroom instead of the local utility. Just as important, the concept of energy efficiency provides multidisciplinary learning opportunities in math, science, and language arts. The Alliance to Save Energy offers educators a wide range of tools and resources to bring energy efficiency into the classroom to save energy while helping students build vital real-world skills. Stage 1 – Desired Results
Established Goals: (M6G1) Students will further develop their understanding of plane figures. (M6P1) Using appropriate technology, students will solve problems that arise in mathematics and in other contexts. (M6P5) Students will create and use pictures, manipulatives, models, and symbols to organize mathematical ideas. Understandings:
    Students will understand that…
objects may or may not have line and/or rotational symmetry. scale drawings are related to real-world similar plane objects that are large or small. scale provides a mechanism by which we can solve problems related to large or small real-world objects. Essential Questions: Why is it important to understand symmetry? Why are plane figures important in the real world? How are scale drawings related to similar plane figures? How can you represent a large image in a smaller proportion? To what extent do professionals use scale to analyze real-world extremely large or microscopic objects?

    A Recipe For Success
    by Roger C. Henderson
    Boise State University Grade:
Time Allotment: One 45-minute class period
Subject Matter: Mathematics Overview: This is an interactive, media enhanced lesson that requires students to examine ratios and proportions. The primary goal is to develop connections between math and real-world situations. Through the use of video, students will explore a relevant application of ratios and proportions. Using the internet, students will apply this concept through guided practice and interactive feedback. Students will then make connections to other real-world examples by applying this knowledge to similar problems in other areas. This lesson incorporates mathematical skills, reading, and writing in an interdisciplinary format. Learning Objectives: Students will be able to:
    • Apply equivalent ratios Apply scaling to ratios and proportions Apply ratios and proportions in real-life situations
Standards: National Standards (From National Council of Teachers of Mathematics grades K-12) Idaho State Standards I: Numbers and Operations
    • Understand numbers, ways of representing numbers, relationships among numbers, and number systems.

The broad range of skills that professional archaeology requires makes it a rich field that teachers can harvest for activities and lessons directed toward a broad range of subject areas. P ast CAP for Teacher participants have reaped the benefits of applying archaeology in the classroom using it to enhance skills related to critical thinking, multiculturalism, writing, mathematics, art and other areas of science. Because of these successes, some of our CAP teachers have offered to share their ideas with others who might also serve to benefit from incorporating archaeology into the classroom. Using a simple vector analysis routine and the PORTS wind and current data, a trajectory for the spill was calculated using wind direction as a cardinal direction, wind speed in knots, current direction in degrees true, and current speed in meters per second. At each hour, speed and direction for the oil movement were computed based on these data using a generic Minerals Management Service algorithm.
