Explorer
The Explorer is part of the Unified Network Informatics Technology for Education (UNITE) efforts at the University of Kansas. The Explorer is part of a research and development effort to establish an on time and user friendly means of delivering a full range of information resources to educators and students. This site includes information on software, lab materials, lesson plans, video tapes, etc. for the teaching of mathematics at the k-12 grade levels.

Math Activities for K-12 Teachers
In December, 1997, NASA Dryden Flight Research Center funded Dan Biezad, Professor of Aerospace Engineering, and Robin Ward, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, both of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, to develop materials for K-12 teachers based on aeronautical themes and NASA projects. One major goal of this project was to make the learning of mathematics more engaging and realistic for students, by using real-world applications.

Our original lesson plans are developed by Thirteen Ed Online Master Teachers. Starting with tried-and-true lessons that work in the classroom, our Web-savvy teachers have built Web-based activities that use the rich resources of Thirteen/WNET New York and the Internet.
Each month, we will create new lessons based upon outstanding PBS series and around outstanding Web resources.
Taxes: Where Does Your Money Go?
This lesson looks at taxes from both the public and the individual perspective. Students learn about why the government taxes, where the money goes and how different income brackets pay different taxes. They also learn about their individual responsibility to pay taxes, and that their gross salary does not always reflect what they will actually take home. The class will also examine ways to lower taxes through deductions, retirement accounts, and flexible spending accounts.
Smart Consumers, Smart Choices
In this lesson, students learn what it means to be a smart consumer by engaging in a level-headed analysis of budget, opportunity costs and self-regulation. Students compare prices within a service field, and weigh the choices of spending money on that item, saving that money, or spending the money on something else. This exercise is a good opportunity to present basic economic concepts.

Modeling Mania
In this lesson, students will view clips from the Cyberchase episode "Modeling Behavior" to examine the usefulness and applications of creating models. They will then create their own models to solve a problem of a scientific nature: making a bridge that won't collapse. Cyber Combos In this lesson, students will have fun learning about combinations. After collecting a variety of sunglasses and t-shirts, students will divide into groups and make as many combinations of t-shirts and sunglasses as possible. Students will discover that six combinations are possible with three t-shirts and two sunglasses. The class then views clips from the Cyberchase episode "A Day at the Spa" to see how the Cyberchase team overcomes problems using combinations. The lesson culminates in a fashion show. Raising the Bar While Hogging the Ham This lesson teaches students the importance of using the appropriate scale when constructing a bar graph. In Cyberchase episode "Raising the Bar" the Cyberkids discover bugs in the cybrary and report this to Ms. Fileshare. Through some clever detective work, problem solving skills, and clues from a "Squeaky Voice," the kids demonstrate how scale is needed to construct a bar graph that can prove their accusations against their rival, Hacker. Segments of this episode, interaction on the Cyberchase Web site, and activities requiring the use of data in the construction of a bar graph to make a convincing argument will provide children with an understanding of how bar graphs can be used to compare values of different things quickly and easily.

Our Earth All of the lessons in this module require students to use their computational, analytical, and graphing skills to better understand our Earth. They will study recycling and the amount of trash they may save by beginning to recycle now. Your students will also track a hurricane, one of the Earth's most powerful and deadly forces. An interesting lesson will have students calculate their weights on other planets, the moon, and the sun. The real-world examples using math skills to gain insight into these areas should encourage your students to see the relevance of mathematical knowledge in daily life.

OBJECTIVES • Collect requested data • Use collected data to answer given questions • Create a pictograph • Interpret information from a pictograph MATERIALS Computer with Internet access INTRODUCTION Explain the elements of a pictograph. Show your students how a pictograph uses illustrations as a scale. Reinforce the three Rs: reduce, recycle, and reuse. CLASSROOM ACTIVITY 1 Have students go to the Paper Recycling site and read the information to answer the questions on the Recycling Activity Sheet. This explains the relevance of recycling. Students will calculate the hours in a year, and use that answer to find the number of aluminum cans they would need to recycle in order to power a TV for a year.

Lesson Created by Marilyn Kilgore, Susan B. Anthony Middle School, Manhattan, KS
Lesson Description:
Materials
  • Math Curse by Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith, note cards, paper, pencil, and calculator.
1. Launching the lesson (engage)
  • Warm-Up- each student will receive a note card as they enter the classroom. Each note card will have an occupation or math pertaining to an occupation. The students will try to find their matches. We will discuss any other math in these jobs once the matches have been made.
  • Read the story
    2. Developing the lesson
  • Ask the students if they see math around them. Where? What? Ask students about percents in the real world. Ask students what percent means to them.
  • Hand out Sense or Nonsense cards. The cards have statements about percent written on them. The students will read the statement aloud. The class will decide if the statement is reasonable or not. (Sense or Nonsense)
  • Pose the question: What else could we use besides percents? Are there fractions, decimals and percents in the real world?

PEGGY MAGDALENO CABOT JUNIOR HIGH NORTH RESEARCH SITE: Impac Learning Systems LESSON TITLE: TOPIC: Statistics SYNOPSIS OF LESSON: Students will use statistics to help Mr. Cobbler set up his new shoe store. They will devise a survey (or you can use the one provided) to predict the most popular types of shoes to stock the store. They will present the information they discover from the survey and display it in different forms to make inferences and arguments from. The students will discuss whether their sample is a good representation of the general population. (Sometimes during the period that 8th grade football is practicing their are very few boys in the other 5th period classes.) Why are some shoe sizes harder to find than others. This could lead to apparel in general. Why are there more of one size jeans at the store than there are other sizes? If the average American is overweight how would that affect the clothing market? CONCEPTS: The students will solve a real-world problem involving statistics. MATH PROCESS SKILLS: Students will learn to interpret data and apply to other real-world situations.

    Writing Guidelines for Math
We're told by teachers who know that many math folks will welcome the chance to examine this declaration of writing standards for written assignments in math. One teacher friend tells us: "As a math teacher who is often frustrated by the shoddy written work that I find in student notes or in handed-in assignments, I was very interested to read the benchmarks that someone took the time to think through. As always, our upfront work will pay off. Our students will be clearer about what exactly we want them to do. Equipped with that knowledge they might even meet our benchmarks!"
    Creating a Supportive Math Classroom
More and more students are becoming afraid to try new things in case they fail, and mathematics, with its emphasis on 'right' or 'wrong' answers, can potentially reinforce these fears, argues Margaret Taplin. She looks at ways mathematics teachers can help to create a secure, supportive classroom environment in which students learn not to fear failure and to value mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.
    Totally Tessellated
This site is recommended by one of our teacher subscribers, known to us only as "Mary." She writes: "The Totally Tessellated Site is great. It features Escher's work and has great animations for students to view concerning the slide, flips, and turns involved in tessellation. My students in 5th and 6th grade enjoyed exploring the site for ideas when they were creating their tessellations for math class. It also has links to a tessellated art contest for students of all ages." We loved it too!
