On the 100th day of school I read the book The Wolf's Chicken Stew by Keiko Kasza. After reading the book, I draw a picture of the fox and a stew pot and I have my class draw 100 items of food in the pot. Shari Lawson, Hampton, VA, First grade In my first grade class we have a reading "Camp Out." Everyone brings sleeping bags, pillows, and blankets. We spend the day reading 100 books and munching on trail mix made from contributions of 100 small edible goodies. Tammy Manley, Massena, NY, First grade We've been reading Emily's First 100 Days of School by Rosemary Wells. This book is great for primary grades and allows students to have a better understanding of time. We have covered interesting math topics such as skip-counting, counting by 5s and counting by 10s. We use a chart where we write the days every time we read from the book. This has allowed us to clearly see the progression of time and even predict how many more days until the 100th day of school. This is an ongoing project that we visit every afternoon before we start our math lesson. Ms. Demas, Plainfield, NJ

Survey of Summer, 1995 DTEACh Participants as to College Preparation in Science and Math Methods The survey was given to 14 participants, who also reported their number of years of teaching experience. The number of courses are shown according to the years of teaching experience. Results Years teaching experience Mean no. college courses (incl. methods) n=3 n=3 n=1 n=1 n=1 n=1 n=4 All sci courses Math courses Physical science Discussion While the number of mathematics courses taken seem to be fairly even across the years since college, participation in science courses is very different, and physical science preparation is weak in the veteran teacher population. Methods Letters of application to the DTEACh program for the 1994-1995 institutes were analyzed for motivations mentioned by the teachers. Forty-six letters were analyzed. Results Of those letters, many discussed their teaching style and some curriculum innovations they provide. Several stated needs and interests in the DTEACh program, including the following: Interest in gaining more background information on mathematics and science (6) Interest in learning ways to integrate mathematics and science (9).

Abstract
  • What are the characteristics of kindergarten education? How is kindergarten taught? What are the dilemmas faced by kindergarten teachers in relation to the new educational reform? Are current political changes influencing in any way what happens in the schools? In what ways?
Methods
A qualitative approach was used to explore issues and dilemmas faced by different stakeholders regarding the implementation of the new K-9 curriculum. The data were collected over an 8-week period. The data consisted of semi-structured and open-ended interviews, focus-group interviews, and document analysis. Data analysis was organized around the main questions of the study (Stake, 1995). Participants were selected based on their willingness to collaborate in the study and their accessibility. The participants included the head of kindergarten education, school administrators, and kindergarten teachers. To validate our findings, we allowed participants to review the quotes and descriptions. We also used multiple data sources (observation, interviews, and document review).

How can I deal with pushy parents? Question
The parents in our preschool program are highly educated and involved in their children's lives. This is a good thing. However, sometimes they want to push their children to succeed in ways that we think are not appropriate. One parent wanted us to teach her preschooler to read and do multiplication tables before starting kindergarten! How can we help parents see that their children learn a great deal when they play with blocks, mess around with water, dictate stories to us about class trips, and engage in pretend play? Dr. Katz
Take opportunities to get a clear picture of exactly what the parents mean when they ask for more emphasis on academic instruction. Discuss with parents aspects of school readiness beyond academic mastery. Share with parents some of the recent research that supports your view that the long-term effects of heavy academic pressure in the preschool years are not favorable even if they appear to be all right in the short term.

Through the Aesthetic Realism Teaching Method
Addition and Subtraction Oppose Prejudice
By Lori Colavito In kindergarten, children learn about addition and subtraction using friendly, colorful objects: unifix cubes, small plastic teddy bears, wooden cusinaire rods. We learned that in addition different things, sometimes numbers, are brought together to make something that is more than any of the others are separatelysuch as one teddy bear plus one teddy bear equals two teddy bears. The children liked this very much. I have learned from Aesthetic Realism that adding and subtracting are opposites and they are everywhere, including in ourselves. So we come to subtraction. Like many teachers, I have seen that this is a subject that children have a particularly hard time with; they often see addition as good and subtraction as bad. I wanted my students to see that both are present all the time and together make for something beautiful. I began by telling the class: "Today we are going to learn how to subtract for the same reason we learned how to add: to know the world." In subtracting, we take a part of something awaysay, one teddy bear from a number of teddy bears. We saw how when we add things together, the outcome is that something gets bigger; when we subtract things, the outcome is that something gets smaller.
