Classroom Teachers Arts Library Support Staff ... Administrative TEACHERS Stacey Sileo Pre-kindergarten Teacher Marilyn Salek-Zepf Kindergarten Teacher I have been teaching at Pershing School for a long time. Kindergarten will always be my favorite grade because I love helping young children take the first steps of their school careers. Young children bring so much curiosity, enthusiasm and sincerity to the classroom. It is the teacher's sacred duty to nurture these traits so that children not only learn, but want to continue learning for the rest of their lives. D'Andrea Mosely 1st Grade Teacher My name is Ms. Mosely and I have been the first grade teacher at Pershing School for six years. Before that, I taught at the middle school level. I believe strongly that all children can learn. A strong, well-rounded and internationalized educational foundation is the key to academic success. First grade is the time of new, exciting and challenging experiences. It is the best grade to teach. 100% effort and participation leads to academic excellence. I have a BA in Psychology from the University of Illinois - CU, an MA in Education from Roosevelt University and an M.A.T. from Columbia College Chicago.

If you're older than 12, kindergarten isn't what you remember. With state tests starting in second grade, kids today can't waste their first year of school taking naps and munching on goldfish crackers. Linda Browning's kindergartners at Mariposa Elementary School in Redlands work on far more than ABCs and 1-2-3s. One afternoon, several children lined up, holding paper coins the size of their heads as their classmates counted the money. They figured out how many pennies make a nickel, how many nickels are in a dime and what one nickel plus a penny plus another penny equals. By the end of year, they were supposed to be able to identify the coins and tell how much each is worth. "You have to go over and over it like a gazillion times," Browning said.

NSF GRANT TO VIRGINIA TECH MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT
HELPING ELEMENTARY TEACHERS IMPROVE MATH-TEACHING SKILLS
Barlow teaches second grade at Shawsville Elementary . Every six years, the county adopts new textbooks, and the one adopted recently for mathematics is called Everyday Math, a hands-on method of teaching students how they use math in their daily lives. Albemarle County recently adopted another hands-on method called Investigations in Number, Data and Space. Through a $2.8-million-dollar, five-year National Science Foundation (NSF) Local Systemic Change (LSC) grant, Virginia Tech mathematicians are helping teachers in Montgomery and Albemarle counties adapt their programs to the needs of their students. All the mathematics teachers from 27 schools in those counties participate in at least 130 hours of professional development provided by the Virginia Tech professors, mathematics supervisors in the two counties, and experienced teachers of the given curriculum. Wayne Patty, professor of mathematics, is the principal investigator, with Harold Mick, professor, and Jesse "Jay" Wilkins, both mathematics educators, co-principal investigators. "The problem is for the students to understand how math is used and give them some experience so that they will remember it," Patty said.
