TEAMS is a challenging academic team competition, The Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science (TEAMS) program enables high school students to learn team development and problem-solving skills using classroom mathematics to solve real-world problems. The TEAMS competition is an annual one-day, two-part event that consists of an open-book, open-discussion exam taken by teams of four-to-eight high school students. TEAMS presents the multidisciplinary aspect of engineering work by illustrating how math and science concepts work together and are applied to solve real-world problems.
This team was among more than 200 students who gathered at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., for the 2002 TEAMS competition.

Math Center Activities:
1. Cut out small objects on Ellison using fun foam - or use erasers from Oriental etc. Include a laminated strip of paper about 3 inches in width and an egg carton. Students make patterns or sort the objects.
2. Write numbers on stickers (round price stickers for garage sales work well) and glue into the bottom of egg cartons. Place a bag with small objects with the carton. Students can read number and count that many objects into egg cups.
3. Playdough, Mat, spinner. Write target numbers on spinner - many great spinners in most math books. Student spins a number: eg student spins 3 - student makes three balls out of the playdough and then creates a number 3 with it. You may include a large template for making the number. 4. Pocket charting: include a variety of number cards for students to sequence in the pocket chart. Remember to include a number line for self checking.

    Making a Pi Necklace
    by Diana Funke
As a 7th grade math teacher, I like to make mathematics as visual as possible. For Pi Day, my students make Pi necklaces. I use Pi as a way of introducing my students to the idea of an irrational number. After studying decimals that terminate or repeat, I ask them to bring in a can and we compare the circumference to the diameter by dividing C by d. This is how they find out what Pi is all about. I have them make a Pi necklace to reinforce the idea that some numbers never repeat or end. We usually use from 100 to 300 beads, depending on the size of the bead. They assign a color to each digit (including 0) and then string beads of those colors into a necklace, using the digits of Pi as their guide. Some students make their own beads with polymer clay and others string store-bought beads of all sizes. The first bead, representing the number three, is bigger than the rest. (In the illustration, the necklace has a big silver triangular "bead" as the whole number 3 part of Pi.)

The Center for Dynamical Systems and Nonlinear Studies was established in September 1988 at Georgia Tech to strengthen the existing research activities in the School of Mathematics with special focus on dynamical systems, differential equations, nonlinear analysis, and applications. There is a unique opportunity for research and graduate study in these areas at the Center and School of Mathematics through postdoctoral and visiting faculty appointments as well as fellowships and assistantships for graduate students. Most research of the Center and affiliated faculty is devoted to dynamical systems defined by maps and by ordinary, functional, and partial differential equations. Specific topics emphasized are stability, nonlinear oscillations, bifurcations, singular perturbations, fractals, ergodic theory, image compression, scientific visualization, stability of matter, Schroedinger operators, dynamics of numerics, numerical analysis and lattice dynamical systems. The Center is interdisciplinary in nature and participates at the international level with other universities in the exchange of researchers and graduate students. Exchanges have occurred with Heidelberg, Ryukoku, the University of Sao Paulo and Cambridge, U.K.
