About
The International Mathematical Union's ( www.mathunion.org ) Committee on Electronic Information and Communication, CEIC, ( www.ceic.math.ca ) was established in 1998 and given a very broad mandate to advise the IMU on electronic matters. Each meeting has comprised a working meeting along with a workshop or public presentations. The most ambitious workshop, which had over a hundred participants, was that in Berkeley on The Future of Mathematical Communication, 1999: www.msri.org/calendar/workshops/9900/Future_of_Math_Communications/ . The presentations can be viewed on line in streaming video through the URL above.

At its 70th session on August 16, 2002, in Shanghai the International Mathematical Union (IMU) Executive Committee has reviewed the activities of its "Committee on Electronic Information and Communication" (CEIC) and decided to re-establish CEIC for a second term with the following revised terms of reference. The terms of reference are also availble in the following formats [ WORD PDF
  • The CEIC is a standing committee of the Executive Committee (EC) of the IMU, reviewed every four years by the EC at its meeting preceding that of the GA. Members are appointed for four year terms by procedures similar to those for IMU Commissions. The EC appoints one of its members to serve on the CEIC.

Students with learning disabilities (LD) are increasingly receiving most of their mathematics instruction in general education classrooms. Studies show that these students benefit from general education mathematics instruction if it is adapted and modified to meet the individual needs of the learners (Salend,1994). Adaptations and modifications come in many forms. They can be as simple as using graph paper to help student with mathematics disabilities keep columnar addition straight or as complex as solving calculus equations with calculators. To ensure effective instruction, adaptations and modifications for instruction are necessary in the areas of lesson planning, teaching techniques, formatting content, adapting media for instruction, and adapting evaluation (Wood, 1992). For many teachers with limited or no preparation for working with students with LD, inclusion of students with mathematics disabilities may create concern. This article provides information on how to adapt and modify mathematics instruction to promote success and understanding in the areas of mathematical readiness, computation, and problem-solving for students with math disabilities. It also presents techniques that promote effective mathematics instruction for these students.

Home Education Magazine January-February 1997 - Columns Older Kids - Cafi Cohen Rethinking Midschool/High School Math M-A-T-H. What thoughts come to mind with the word MATH? The three R's. A government school "required subject," according to many state statutes and some local regulations. An essential topic in any homeschool. Past that point, what official guidance are you given for teaching math? Often, none. What you cover and how you cover it is up to you. In the absence of specific directions, many homeschooling families pursue what I call School Math. School Math is how most parents studied math when they attended school; and it is how most schools still teach math. School Math involves textbooks, workbooks, and exams. Older kids pursuing School Math study the subject sequentially in other words, arithmetic, followed by algebra, then geometry, second year algebra, trigonometry, and so on. Those using a School Math program must always "show all the steps" and reason exactly like the author of the text reasons. Alternate approaches to problem solving are unacceptable. Getting the right answer is emphasized, often to the exclusion of understanding the process. School Math texts often include unrealistic problems. Typical is the following. A 20-ft. telephone pole falls across a street and the two ends extend one foot and three feet either side of the street. How wide is the street?

MATH... and Other Tales of Horror
This article, by Leslie Wilson, was originally published in the September-October 1995 issue of Home Education Magazine.
    Math
The very word strikes terror into the hearts of many. And you have to teach it. If you are now wondering why you ever started homeschooling, don't despair. There are many life-saving approaches to this most feared topic. Here are a few we've tried in our family.
I'll admit at the start to a grudging appreciation for math. I don't know where I'd be without it in cooking, checkbook balancing, store trips... However, that doesn't make it much easier to like, only to co-exist. I set out to improve this outlook for Jenny's sake as well as my own. That is why we eventually developed a very eclectic approach to math.
In the beginning, we relied primarily on the guidelines of a curriculum manual and a "hands-on" approach without a formal textbook. By using a list of goals for each grade as a checklist, we found that using math in everyday activities, supplemented by some of the more interesting workbooks, computer programs and other tools, was the least painful approach. There are several excellent math packages available for elementary education (which is the only area on which I can speak from experience). These are discussed in detail in many curriculum manuals. The package we ended up with, Miquon Math, worked nicely with our Cuisenaire Rods and the Annotations Book gave excellent discussions of each math concept introduced. However, Jenny's learning style proved to be more free-wheeling than the structured approach of such programs. "Supplemental" soon became the operative word for our family math program. Difficult, multi-purposed and interwoven math concepts benefit from a close scrutiny from as many different perspectives as possible. Also real-life applications give an extra boost to hammering home a point. Here's a popourri of tools & techniques that have brought math to life in our home:
