The two specialization offered are
Ceramics and Composites

Metallurgical Process Engineering

Apart from the theoretical courses it also has a large project work component for a duration of upto 18 months. The last three semesters are spent in completing a DDP (Dual Degree Project) which is required towards the completion of the programme. It is a major exercise in the field of expertise of the student. To know about some of the DDP's being done by the students this year click here.
Specialization in Ceramics and Composites The introduction of new technologies has always depended to a large extent on the availability of newer, inexpensive and better materials. The development of new materials has resulted in a revolution in areas such as information technologies, telecommunications, micro-electronics, lasers, fibre optics, biotechnologies, etc. Continuous development of advanced ceramics and composites with novel and unique characteristics has clearly necessitated having a specialization in this area.

Admissions

Graduate programs
Upon entering graduate school, students must select one thesis supervisor from among the 22 full professors in the three departments or the 15 full professors in the two research institutes. Students also participate in seminars and advanced lectures. A typical student spends the first year completing most of the required class work. The second year is reserved almost exclusively for conducting research and completing the thesis.

UBC Researcher Wins Canada's Top Science and Engineering Prize
Vancouver Dr. Keith Brimacombe , Director of the Centre for Metallurgical Process Engineering at the University of British Columbia , is the 1997 winner of the Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering. "Keith Brimacombe is one of the innovative giants of 20th century metallurgical process engineering, and a role model for young Canadian scientists and engineers," said Dr. Thomas A. Brzustowski, President of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the award sponsor. In offering his congratulations from Ottawa, Dr. Jon Gerrard, Secretary of State (Science, Research and Development), said that scientific research and innovation are key to Canada's ability to compete in the new economy. "Dr. Brimacombe has been a major contributor to the economic competitiveness of the Canadian steel industry and to the nationwide effort to build productive research links between industry and universities." The Canada Gold Medal honours outstanding, sustained, lifetime contributions to Canadian research. Individuals in all sectors concerned with the advancement of research university, business, industry and government may be nominated for the award. The final selection is made by an NSERC award committee on the basis of an international peer evaluation.

Nature Article by Gerberich and Mook
William Gerberich and William Mook's article "A New Picture of Plasticity" appeared in the August 2005 issue of Nature. The dislocation mechanisms involved in nanoscale deformation have so far been largely studied theoretically from atomistic simulations. High-temperature nanoindentation measurements provide a new quantitative experimental method of studying the onset of nanoscale plasticity. A link to the article is below. Read more...
