Masachusetts school Library media Association. FACT SHEET massachusetts schoolLibrary media centers. THE PROBLEM massachusetts education policy makers
http://www.mslma.org/legislation/legislationfactsheet01.html
FACT SHEET:
Massachusetts School Library Media Centers THE PROBLEM:

Massachusetts education policy makers are not supporting the power of school library media centers to help students achieve. There is great inequity in access to quality literature, information and library professionals in schools throughout the state.
  • Of the fifty (50) U.S. states, Massachusetts ranks:
in providing its public school students with state-certified library media specialists, in teachers who agree that school library materials are adequate to support educational objectives, in providing its public schools with school libraries and in mean circulation per pupil per school of all library materials. The 1999 Simmons Study of MA School Library Media Centers found that:
of Massachusetts elementary schools did not have full-time library professionals on staff, of public schools did not have a library media center, an average of $12.00 per child is spent for school library books – less than half the average cost of one hardcover children’s book. The MA Department of Education has no administrator designated to provide leadership and set standards for school library media programs statewide.

School Library Data
Surveys and instructions and definitions are sent to School Library Media Centers in Massachusetts each year and are compiled into a report. The report provides information that may be used to evaluate school library media center services, support long-range and budget planning, strengthen service evaluation, and promote informed decision making. Included in the report are the most recent MCAS scores for the public schools whose library media centers reported data for holdings, expenditures and staffing. Data reports are in PDF format and require Adobe Acrobat Reader: School Library Media Center Report: Fall 2004

Introduction
Rational for Today's School Library Media Center
In the complex technological world of today, education is no longer simply the acquisition of a body of knowledge. It is rather the ability to continually access and use a vast array of information sources. The learner must be able to effectively evaluate these sources, combine them in meaningful patterns and react creatively to the results. For a successfully educated individual, this mode of learning becomes a lifelong habit, since knowledge acquired today may be inadequate tomorrow, while the process of searching out answers, once learned, will be a lifetime skill. As education moves beyond the textbook and the classroom, the school library media center and its programs are essential to the educational process, providing access to a collection of skillfully selected, organized, and managed resources in all formats. With such resources, the center serves as a major channel through which the changing body of knowledge flows, thereby providing all members of the school community with the broadest possible range of information and ideas. As we approach the next millennium, the information explosion must not, however, eclipse our literary, historical, and cultural heritage. The school library media center will continue to provide programs and materials that promote a love of reading, improve listening skills, foster visual literacy, and encourage the appreciation of fine literature.

Impact of School Library Media Centers on Academic Achievement An article from School Library Media Quarterly by Keith Curry Lance, Director, Library Research Service, Colorado which details the Colorado study which looked at the relationship between funding of Library media centers and student achievement. One conclusion was that students at schools with better-funded Library media centers tend to achieve higher average reading scores, whether their schools and communities are rich or poor and whether adults in their community are well or poorly educated.

School Library Teacher Concentration
School library teachers (SLT) manage the library media technology centers that serve as the hubs of information and educational activity in schools. In addition to working directly with children and young adults, they collaborate with classroom teachers and provide information resources that enhance school curriculum. For individuals who seek certification as school library teachers, the GSLIS School Library Teacher program provides exceptional academic and professional training. The National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) endorses our program and external accrediting agencies commend us on the program's outstanding quality. Simmons SLT students are noted for their exceptionally high pass rates on the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL). The SLT program prepares students for NASDTEC library teacher licensure. NASDTEC certification for the Northeastern region is valid in 26 states including Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Rhode Island. In addition to monitored fieldwork and a school practicum at the elementary-school or secondary-school level, course requirements include: Technology and the School Library Media Center (
