The power of the niche: His company's expanding thanks to success in its marketing strategy. Photo: W. Marc Bernsau Fast-growing parent-group publisher/service provider expands focus Sean McFadden Journal Staff WRENTHAM Tim Sullivan set out to establish a company focusing on an overlooked segment of the parent-group population, and wound up with a lesson in the power of niche marketing. In 1999, the former teacher and fund-raising consultant launched PTO Today Inc., a Wrentham-based magazine and service provider, in an attempt to give voice to a community that he says has often flown under the radar screen PTOs (the umbrella term for parent-teacher organizations), which he says account for about 75 percent of all parent groups nationally, but lack the brand recognition of the 100-year-old PTA (Parent Teacher Association).

Parental Involvement
June 1997 An update for Title I schoolwide program schools from the New England Comprehensive Assistance Center Parent Involvement In today's world, it is not always easy for parents, especially single parents, to find time and energy to get involved in their children's education. However, when parents become involved, both children and parents are benefit. Researchers report that parent participation enhances children's self-esteem, improves their academic achievement, improves parent-child relationships, and helps parents develop positive attitudes towards school. Two Types of Involvement One kind of parental involvement is school-based. It centers around school activities such as attending parent-teacher conferences and school functions, volunteering at the school, receiving and responding to written communications from the teacher, and encouraging parents to join Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) or Parent Teacher Organizations (PTOs). Many schools try to make it easier for working parents to participate in school-based activities by scheduling conferences and school events at different times of the day. A second type of involvement focuses on parent-child interaction at home. Home-based activities allow parents flexibility in scheduling, provide opportunities for parents and children to spend time together, and offer a relaxed setting. The most beneficial home activities are deceptively simple. Many parents do not realize that when they involve children in day-to-day activities such as a trip to the gas station or grocery store, they can provide opportunities for learning. For example, although watching TV is viewed as noneducational, joint TV viewing can become educational if parents and children discuss what they saw.

Rochelle Riley: Detroiters picture a bright future for the city
December 31, 2000 TODAY IS THE LAST OF a century, the final hurrah of an era that gave new meaning to civil rights and urban planning, to space exploration and global communication, to the Electoral College. It gave us realities that were once dreams and dreams that will someday be realities. We saw communist empires and sports records fall. We watched the No. 1 TV show in the country star a black family. We saw the U.S. Constitution at work and wondered whether it remains the best guideline for a country founded by rebels who displaced Indians and enslaved Africans to pursue their manifest destiny in a land far from a king. We saw native Americans create a way to survive through sheer will, then gambling, and African Americans achieve success and freedom through culture, art and sport, then academia and politics. Here in Detroit, a city watched itself be molded like a beloved old car, lauded as a model to be replicated, then damaged in a 1943 crash into racial and economic reality. Then it was rebuilt, repainted and polished before crashing again into that same racial tree in 1967 and being left to rust.

John Kerry
The Democratic Nominee
After spending several uneventful months aboard a guided-missile frigate in the Pacific Ocean, Kerry wanted to get into the thick of the battle. He trained to become the commander of a Navy "swift boat," a small gunboat that patrolled the rivers of Vietnam.
